To think my new colleagues hate me?

Recently started a new job, WFH 100% of the time.

I suggested that we all meet for lunch (team of 7) which my boss seemed on board with. He's organised the lunch for December 21st. Which to me seems a bit late really but anyway.

DH said that everyone will dislike me as all the team members love the whole WFH thing and won't want to trudge downtown.

Also, boss sent the email invite and wrote some words in Italian (Italian resto) and I replied to all, in Italian, saying looking forward to it, etc.

Am I an enthusiastic oddball?

I don't know what I'm missing here but I don't understand why the boss would write in Italian?!

But anyway, that aside, I'd absolutely not want to go. I am avoiding anything at all public before Christmas as I don't want a seasonal dose of COVID plus I'm not a big fan of forced socialising (even though I inevitably enjoy it when I drag my arse there!) But.....I also recognise that most of my friends in other jobs would bloody love a Christmas meal and would jump at the chance if someone organised this. I know I'm just an antisocial git 😅

All of that aside, your DH seems a bit quick to piss on your chips. Everyone will "dislike you" - did he actually say that? Tell him to nob off.

I'm curious OP - when you say you suggested Christmas lunch, how did you make the suggestion? Did you suss out your colleagues first, to find out what they thought of the idea (given that they hadn't already sorted something out themselves)? Or raise it at a team meeting (and if so, what was the reaction from the team members)? Or did you raise it with your boss first, and then it was announced to the team as a 'non-obligatory team event'?

How absolutely dare you write Italian words, people wouldn't possibly understand antipasti! minestrone! pasta! pizza! bolognese! carbonara! spaghetti! risotto! lasagne! tagliatelle! gnocchi! vino! tiramisu!

hope I've not annoyed anyone

Ciao!

SirChenjins · 19/11/2021 09:18

Perché avresti infastidito qualcuno con questo? Sono sicuro che le persone possono farcela con il tiramisù, ma probabilmente non capirebbero "non vedo l'ora! Dovrebbe essere divertente!"

Caveat - that's from Google Translate, so probably makes little or no sense to an Italian speaker.
@Geamhradh Except that isn’t what happened. The OP used the short form of restaurant in her op, her boss wrote a couple of sentences in Italian saying that s/he was looking forward to seeing everyone. Read the thread and you might have your own “oh fuck” facepalm moment.
Er, no.
No facepalm here. And have read the thread ta.
Sarei fessa altrimenti.

SmallPrawnEnergy · 19/11/2021 10:27

You can't please everyone. Some people will love going for lunch. Some won't, but they don't have to come.
Exactly. I would have hated going for a Christmas lunch when working IN the office let alone WFH but I’m antisocial.

If you spoke Italian I think it would be fine. But the fact you don’t screams brown nose to me, so I wouldn’t like you for that reason tbh.

@immersivereader yeah I totally got the wrong end of the stick when I read your post, sorry 😂 I'm 7 months and blame baby brain!!

Fullyloaded · 19/11/2021 22:52

@Geamhradh I got the wrong end of the stick too and thought OP meant that her boss had said "resto" and thought he was speaking in Italian (which would have made it SUPER cringe), but actually he wrote a whole sentence in Italian. @MadameMinimes is right!
