To think perfumes arent strong anymore

Recently bought two perfumes I used to wear 10 years ago and they are definitely not as strong. It feels like I can barely smell perfume on anyone else these days either

Is it me or are they ripping us off?

Re Chanel Chance - I've tried it a couple of times and honestly, its lovely but doesn't last 5 minutes on me.

An inoffensive eau de toilette for daytime is SJP Lovely, lasts a couple of hours or longer when I spray it then walk into the spray.

The world does seem to be divided into two camps, those of us who love smelling nice and those who find perfume induces migraine, nausea etc. I always wear soft light scents like Lovely during the daytime and keep my favourites for nighttime.

JollyJoon · 17/11/2021 17:24

Love Chance but that's another one that vanishes on me after half an hour.

I only buy EdP

I find penhaligons last really long. They are quite expensive but you only need a tiny bit so are good value.

DeepaBeesKit · 17/11/2021 17:44

Are you wearing pure parfum? Eau du toilette is much weaker, even eau du parfum is weaker.

DeepaBeesKit · 17/11/2021 17:46

Op I do also think you get desensitized when you wear a lot of perfume.

My mother likes to wear strong fragrances and she says similar things to you, but when she says she can barely notice it it still smells very strong to me.

Youngatheart00 · 17/11/2021 17:47

Really think covid could be at least a partial culprit here?

My sense of smell most definitely isn’t the same since having it

HalloweenScrooge · 17/11/2021 17:53

One of my neighbours has a very distinctive and overpowering perfume. I was walking down the street the other day and could smell her scent, and looked up and she was a good 200m ahead of me! I think people are just becoming less sensitive to smells.

Briony123 · 17/11/2021 18:37

The perfume houses no longer use whale blubber as an ingredient, which is why there is less "staying power". I heard that Chanel was the last to discontinue the ingredient. So it's a good reason for the reduction in quality, at least!

HalloweenScrooge · 17/11/2021 18:49

Do you mean ambergris? This isn’t whale blubber but a waxy substance that forms in the gut of sperm whales. Traditionally it was harvested from the sea surface or washed up on shore. Which is not so reliable in 2021.

JollyJoon · 17/11/2021 18:51

Hmmm. DP just came in and said "you smell nice". This is the pure poison I was bitching about. Maybe I HAVE become desentisised?! But I definitely remember feeling like I could smell this same perfume on me much more 10 years ago.

I am frequently choked by the strength of other women’s perfumes and sometimes aftershave too.

Ugh. Perhaps it’s not strong enough so they bathe in the stuff ?

Callixte · 17/11/2021 18:57

A lot of fragrances have been reformulated which may result in them smelling different But if the smell seems familiar but weak, also double check if it might be an issue of concentration. A lot of fragrances come in multiple strengths, so if you loved something in a parfum/extrait strength (the strongest) and then try it in an eau de parfum (medium) or eau de toilette or cologne (light) or an eau fraiche or "deo" (lightest) that can make a big difference. See here for more info if you think that could be the explanation.

MrsBerthaRochester · 17/11/2021 19:09

Tanbu. I love perfume and wear it everyday. I love Ysl Black opium but literally cant smell it after ten minutes. So I bought the new Extreme version. Its even weaker!! Even with my nose to wrist I can barely snell it. Im seriously considering returning it!

MrsBerthaRochester · 17/11/2021 19:15

Yanbu even!

Maybe you have

You could try the sniffing coffee thing?

I know someone who layered Poison - body wash, lotion, perfume.

I think she probably caused most of her Tube carriage to move and when she arrived at the bar we were all "christ, wash off as much as you can".

PrinceOfRohan · 08/09/2023 14:22

I used to wear Dior Homme Intense which i would spray before going to the clubs, and by the next morning id wake up and the perfume was so powerful id throw my top off across the room and still smell it. Now, after an hour, its a skin scent, after 2 hours, its gone. I am under no doubt that they are diluting their products to increase profits, its industry wide too. I actually decided to start buying dupes too, they dont last either but why spend £70 on 50ml that projects the same as £20 100ml knock off? Im currently wearing Tom Ford Lost cherry from the essence vault, it doesnt last that long though.

BeverleyMacker · 08/09/2023 14:50

I've noticed this the last few years. Most perfume doesn't have the staying power anymore 😔

daimbarsatemydogsbone · 08/09/2023 15:27

I think some people's noses are faulty.
When I am out I often encounter people who absolutely reek of some kind of stuff they have obviously sprayed on in copious quantities.
It can be really overpowering at times.

Araminta34 · 08/09/2023 15:31

I've stopped buying perfume now. I remember when I used to pass people in the streets and think, what gorgeous perfume. Now, my hand sanitizer smells stronger.

PetiteNasturtium · 08/09/2023 15:37

@DaisyNGO I am allergic to perfumed products so all fabric conditioner and actually perfume. Air fresheners. Have you ever found apart from dosing yourself up with anti histamine and avoiding situation places anything else helpful at all?
