To think perfumes arent strong anymore

Recently bought two perfumes I used to wear 10 years ago and they are definitely not as strong. It feels like I can barely smell perfume on anyone else these days either

Is it me or are they ripping us off?

I think that perfumes are basically just watered down more and yes we are being ripped off in so many ways. I make my own perfumes now.

Nothing worse than smelling overpowering scents. Oud gives me a headache.

It's fucking awful - like someone standing right next to you shouting.
daimbarsatemydogsbone · 17/11/2021 13:14

Also fairly sure you get nose blind to it on yourself so it's not a reliable guide - you may be gassing others but not noticing.

You do get nose blind after a while but in the last couple of years when I’ve bought a new perfume I can’t smell it on myself when I first start using it (I have a very keen sense of smell). It always used to be that with a new perfume it’s all I can smell!
RubyTuesday70 · 17/11/2021 13:31

My two favourites are Joy by Dior and Mon Guerlain, but after 3 hours you literally can't smell them at all.

On the other hand I've got Angel Muse by Mugler and one tiny spritz of that lingers on you for the whole day and longer on clothes.

Sugarplumfairy65 · 17/11/2021 13:38

Over the last 2 years a lot of fragrances have had to be reformulated because ingredients that used to be in them have either been banned, or the amount allowed to be used reduced. The 49th amendment has recently been implemented

WildRosie · 17/11/2021 13:38

Suits me. I was once sitting on a bus near a woman whose perfume was so strong it made me feel sick. I would have moved seats but it was a full single decker. I had to get off the bus before I puked. Whatever she was wearing was disgusting.

Bippertyboo2 · 17/11/2021 13:39

I don't actually agree that Thierry Mugler perfumes are still strong; I used to wear Angel and would receive compliments or people would ask what I was wearing, now even my DH can't smell it, it's so disappointing when as others have pointed out, perfume is expensive. DH's aftershave seems as strong as ever though.

Ducksareruiningmypatio · 17/11/2021 13:40

I've worn Flower by Kenzo for years and people used to comment on it regularly.
Now no one can even smell it! My boyfriend has to practically Bury his face in my neck to smell it!
He's not nose blind to it because it's a fairly new relationship and I didn't wear it at the start of our relationship due to us both having covid and no sense of smell

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 17/11/2021 13:42

I disagree.

I keep having to sit next to someone who reeks of perfume. Every single day on the tube or in other public places.

Lockheart · 17/11/2021 13:47

Are you buying eau de toilette or eau de parfum? The former is much weaker than the latter.

CounsellorTroi · 17/11/2021 13:51

I think when you put perfume on yourself you stop smelling it after a while, but other people can still smell it.

I just looked into this and am surprised. I'm allergic to so many things and had never known that oakwood was causing so many allergies.
DaisyNGO · 17/11/2021 13:52

Oakmoss, I think that should say.

BashfulClam · 17/11/2021 13:53

I only buy Eau de Parfum as it lasts. It’s more expensive that eau de toilette but much better as the scent isn’t diluted.

idontlikealdi · 17/11/2021 13:57

EDT or EDP? Really makes a difference, as does the price.

FindingMeno · 17/11/2021 14:02

Interesting thread.
I thought because of having had covid recently, perhaps my sense of smell hadn't returned fully.

ElsieMc · 17/11/2021 14:09

I can confirm that Chanel no5 still has a strong smell. Whereas Diors Joy is weaker but overall lighter smelling perfume. Isn't it correct that No 5 was the first chemical based perfume? Might be wrong.

I also find that EDP Si also holds it's scent well and is a nice, warm perfume.

I used to like green smelling perfumes. Estee Lauder used to do one called Alliage if anyone is old enough to remember this. It was very strong, as is Youth Dew which I cannot stand.

It is all rather strange, as I find some scented candles too strong. I had DW Caramel latte and had to blow it out as it was too strong. DH told me how much he liked it, it reminded him of something familiar. It was M and S Indian Ready meal starters.

MrsColon · 17/11/2021 14:09

I use Chanel pure parfum, which lasts a good 8 hours.

As a guide, eau de toilette should last around 2h, eau de parfum 4h, and pure parfum around 8h.

Chocolatewheatos · 17/11/2021 14:24

MaxNormal

Really? I am periodically gassed by passers by who had a heavy hand with the perfume. Is the rest of the world just going nose blind?

Same. Think realistically those who can't smell it as much are going nose blind to it.

Yeah I agree. I very rarely wear any scent and use 2 pumps, maybe 3 in total and can still smell it when getting undressed again.
I don't know how some people can breath when I'm coughing just from them walking past me.

EdenFlower · 17/11/2021 14:27

It's all do to new safety regulations of the chemicals used.

Pottedpalm · 17/11/2021 14:27

I’m happy not to be knocked oiut by Estee Lauder Youth Dew or Poison.
In teenage years we would buy body sprays. I was given a tiny glass bottle of perfume about a third full by my grandmother. Everywhere I wore it people would comment on the beautiful perfume.
Turned out it was pure perfume, Quadrille by Balenciaga. Perfect for the youthclub! 😂

Acrackineverything · 17/11/2021 15:49

I really miss having a spritz of whatever's new in Boots, I know you can ask for one but this invites the SA to follow you around telling you all about the perfume when I just want to be left alone!

But yes, I have been trying some lately as research for my Xmas present from DH, and I have noticed that as soon as I'm home the scent has vanished.

I recently found half a bottle of Violet Blonde by Tom Ford in the attic. My DH bought it for me when it came out first so about 10 years ago, and I hated it with a passion. I used it (sparingly) as an air freshener for a while then forgot about it. Now I've started using it and I don't know if I've gone noseblind or if over the last 10 years it has mellowed but I quite like it now! Not as overpowering and less chemical-y. But the smell still lasts all day.
