After years of complaining about our heating bills, DH has suddenly discovered, now he's working from home, that our house gets pretty bloody nippy in the winter, and is merrily whacking the thermostat up whenever he feels the slightest chill.

I have no problem at all putting the heating on when people are cold. I hate being cold. However: HE REFUSES TO WEAR ANYTHING MORE THAN A BLOODY T-SHIRT AROUND THE HOUSE! He's tried to claim it's a "warm" t-shirt. WELL CLEARLY IT'S NOT DH, OR YOU WOULDN'T BE SODDING WELL COLD!!!

Ah well. At least the fire of my fury is keeping me nice and toasty. 😆

Oh I'd be turning it down as soon as he turns it up! DH has always been a warm person, but lately complains the house is cold while only wearing a tshirt. Drives me nuts.

Sirzy · 16/11/2021 11:06

Especially with the prices now then no heating unless all layered up!

Wagglerock · 16/11/2021 11:08

Is your DH my DH? My idiot was wearing shorts and flip flops the other day and had the audacity to ask to put the heating on.

IhateBoswell · 16/11/2021 11:11

Oh I agree ☝️

ANameChangeAgain · 16/11/2021 11:13

my idiot 🤣🤣

Xiaoxiong · 16/11/2021 11:14

I swear this is the 5th thread I've read this winter about people who feel entitled to wear a t-shirt at home in winter in the UK, enabled by putting the central heating on, likely to be powered by burning fossil fuels and costing a bomb.

You don't have to sit with mittens, a coat and hat indoors with ice on the inside of the windows, but some level of warm layering should be expected to mitigate your fuel consumption.

No one would seriously expect to wear a coat, hat and scarf indoors in on a warm day in summer and then whack on the air con because they're too hot. But somehow wearing a t-shirt and then whacking on the central heating without layering up first is an entitlement Confused

Ryannah · 16/11/2021 11:15

He’s being ridiculous. Get him one of those hooded blankets. Nobody in their right mind sits around in a tshirt unless it’s the height of summer!

RosettaR · 16/11/2021 11:15

I hate people messing with the thermostat! The point of a thermostat is that if it was really cold, the heating would come on by itself. That's literally how a thermostat works!

Stovetopespresso · 16/11/2021 11:20

I work in the insext world of climate change and getting people to change is reeeeaaally hard. I'd suggest gamifying it so put the smart meter of you have one right next to him so he can see how much he uses day by day and tries to decrease it by 20p a day or whatever.

girlmom21 · 16/11/2021 11:20

My DP does this but he sits in his boxers...

We've recently compromised (he's started doing as he's told) and will only put the heating on if he's wearing a hoodie, using a blanket and is still cold!

loislovesstewie · 16/11/2021 11:21

Just chuck a jumper at him! He's being an idiot.

Stovetopespresso · 16/11/2021 11:22

meant unsexy world of climate change Smile

DraigFach · 16/11/2021 11:31

Everyone in our home knows that they're not even allowed to look at the thermostat unless they're wearing socks, trousers or whatever covers the legs and jumper.

I'm not in the habit of making people freeze but like hell am I paying for extra heating just because they want to wander around in shorts and Tshirt!

FortunesFave · 16/11/2021 11:37

I live in Oz and it's HOT here in summer. My friend has the air con on all the time and even puts on a cardigan at times...I'm thinking JUST TURN OFF THE AIR CON!!

FreeBritnee · 16/11/2021 11:40

🤣

HollyandIvyandAllThingsYule · 16/11/2021 11:41

👋 to @GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal (Seasonal namechange but I know you from BC and S&B)

Oh that would make me properly angry. I’d be turning it down constantly, berating him and lecturing him about the waste of money/energy/whatever he used to say to you. I would honestly be willing to cut off my nose to spite my face for at least two weeks to make my point, because I cannot stand that kind of hypocrisy.

BootsScootsAndToots · 16/11/2021 11:44

I'm in Aus too and it most definitely is not HOT in my part at the moment 🥶

RB68 · 16/11/2021 11:47

Yes my DH has notably decided our house is cold in the day - but does he get up and make a cuppa, clear the space around the radiator or put layers on or decent socks or even indoor shoes/slippers NOPE fool. He is going to be pissed off with the bills when they come in though

Triffid1 · 16/11/2021 11:51

@Stovetopespresso

Our lounge is the coldest room in the house and while I have individual controls on all the radiators, it's often easier to leave the central thermostat in a different room and then just heat the lounge up separately with our electric oil radiator. Theoretically, it can be on low, in the middle of the room, and warm things up.....

.... DH has an annoying habit of leaving it on 24/7. He also often has it on high but with it tucked against a wall or something (it's currently resting against a bloody couch. Drives me MAD.

Then, as he had it on constantly while homeschooling DD - he got the electricity bill and was perplexed as to why it was DOUBLE what we normally paid. At which point, he stopped leaving it on 24/7 (but still leaves it in irritating positions).

He also leaves the front door open completely while coming in and out of the car. Causing the lounge to instantly drop to frigid temperatures and the little oil radiator to go into overdrive in an attempt to heat things up again.

I feel your pain OP. I feel your pain.

ambereeree · 16/11/2021 11:53

I'm the heating police in the house. If anybody feels cold I'm there to say wear a jumper. I'm feeling your rage OP.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 16/11/2021 11:58

👋🏻 back at @HollyandIvyandAllThingsYule (nice festive name!)

I have pointedly bought him two jumpers for Christmas - well, one jumper, and a merino wool zip up hoody. I'm thinking he can keep that one over the back of his chair and slip it on if he gets cold.

He better bloody do!

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 16/11/2021 12:00

It doesn't matter how many layers I wear, if the air is cold then I am cold and the heating goes up.

I'm not saying people should walk around in shorts but some of the threads on heating on MN are just mad.

HollyandIvyandAllThingsYule · 16/11/2021 12:02

Woollen slippers/booties might be a good idea if you’ve got the budget for it. We live in an old house and DH (health/circulation issues) has been much more comfortable since i got him Celtic and co. slippers that come up over his ankles.

mam0918 · 16/11/2021 12:02

I have been baffled my whole life by people who don't use blankets and warm clothes in the house - it's literally the designed purpose of these items.

I mostly work from home and I'm constantly wrapped in a blanket but many of the older generations have told me how 'rude' it is to use a blanket during the day.

Maybe if they did they wouldn't be complaining about not being able to afford their 'tropical temperature' heating bill though because they're always the first to play the freezing poverty granny card when not willing to use common sense.

milveycrohn · 16/11/2021 12:02

I think different people often feel the heat or cold differently, whether a couple, or even work colleages in an office.
However, I do think one should not really expect to wear a T-Shirt in the Autumn, Winter and turn the heating up, before wearing an extra jumper.
On the other hand, if one is Working From Home, or spending all your time sitting at a computer, you are likely to feel colder, than if you are someone, who is 'on the go', all day.
