To think: "wear a jumper, you raging bloody hypocrite??!"

After years of complaining about our heating bills, DH has suddenly discovered, now he's working from home, that our house gets pretty bloody nippy in the winter, and is merrily whacking the thermostat up whenever he feels the slightest chill.

I have no problem at all putting the heating on when people are cold. I hate being cold. However: HE REFUSES TO WEAR ANYTHING MORE THAN A BLOODY T-SHIRT AROUND THE HOUSE! He's tried to claim it's a "warm" t-shirt. WELL CLEARLY IT'S NOT DH, OR YOU WOULDN'T BE SODDING WELL COLD!!!

Ah well. At least the fire of my fury is keeping me nice and toasty. 😆

DH has been wfh since last March, and last Winter he admitted that "actually, it is pretty cold in here when the heating goes off, isn't it?"

I'd only been telling him that for four years...

Helenahandbasketbing · 16/11/2021 12:53

Disconnect the thermostat and say nothing.

DebbieG71 · 16/11/2021 12:54

hahaha that's excellent sofia! Tell him the law

etulosba · 16/11/2021 12:55

I absolutely hate wearing thick/multiple layers of clothing. And I refuse to be uncomfortable in my own house.

I’m sat here in jeans and a soft fleece. It’s 16 degrees and I am perfectly comfortable. Your body adapts to cope with lower/higher temperatures.

If you let it.

JudgeJ · 16/11/2021 12:56

Warm clothing doesn't have to be incomfortable or heavy, base layers work wonders. I have a couple of these and under a thin jumpoer I feel fine, as long as my feet ate worm, I often put on socks to go to bed and little else! When I was still teaching I got fed up of moaning children who refused to wear a long-sleeved shirt or a jumper or a coat for coming to school and then expected me to have the heating on full whack and naturally their Mummies were constantly on the phone because I was being cruel to their little chrubs.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 16/11/2021 12:56

I used to work with 2 blokes, one 20s, one 50s, who still expected to wear just a T shirt or thin shirt in winter, even though we had the public in and out all day, so the door was constantly open, letting freezing air in.

So our heating was going full blast for these two, and the general public, coming in in winter coats, would be roasting.
I used to threaten to knit the blokes a really horrible jumper and make them wear them but that didn’t work, funnily enough.🤔

Platax · 16/11/2021 12:57

I don't think there's any need to put on loads of coats and jumpers, but I do think it's perfectly reasonable to expect people to put on at least a couple of layers including stuff with long sleeves and something to cover their legs. When I'm WFH I generally wear a T shirt, long-sleeved loose T-shirt or similar, and a jumper, plus trousers; when it gets really cold, I put on a vest and maybe long johns. It's perfectly comfortable.

Also, if we need extra but there's only me in the house, I only ever have a heater or radiator on in the room I'm in.

Fairyliz · 16/11/2021 12:58

All of these people with ‘uncomfortable’ clothes are you sure you are wearing the right size?
I have clothes in all sorts of fabrics and they only feel unpleasant when I put on a bit of weight and the waistband digs in. I see it as a good reminder to cut back for a bit.

Muchmorethan · 16/11/2021 12:58

I have an electric throw. When there's just me in the house, would it be cheaper to use that or put the heating on?

SprayedWithDettol · 16/11/2021 12:59

Thanks to the menopause I like heating v low (16 deg is perfect) and wear a t-shirt. The amount of heat I give off could heat a large house I’m sure.

Mypathtriedtokillme · 16/11/2021 12:59

@BootsScootsAndToots

I'm in Aus too and it most definitely is not HOT in my part at the moment 🥶
Mine either. I’m wearing trackers and a jumper.

Summer is going to be a sweaty filthy humid one when it does heat up.
I hate when it’s so humid your face slap just melt off as soon as you step outside.

Namechangeforthis88 · 16/11/2021 13:02

Recommend sitting in a 3 season sleeping bag with hot water bottle under your feet for WFH.

LaetitiaASD · 16/11/2021 13:03

From a personal finance and environmental point of view I advocate loads of layers... if you have two jumpers on and are still cold, and a third means your typing (WFH) is obstructed, then you can put the heating on.

Living in London I genuinely don't think that there are more than 30 or 60 days a year where it's warm enough indoors to go around with bare arms.

SugarlumpsesBumpses · 16/11/2021 13:04

Yep. DH walks around in boxers on an evening and complains about how cold it is!

Blackmagicqueen · 16/11/2021 13:04

'Recommend sitting in a 3 season sleeping bag with hot water bottle under your feet for WFH'

Are you working in a shed?

pointythings · 16/11/2021 13:05

It's mad, isn't it? I've been WFH since the pandemic started and yes, I've set the thermostat to 19 during working hours - much lower overnight, obviously. So I wear warm clothing, layer up with a cardie and wrap myself in a blanket cocoon because hey, people can only see me from the shoulders up anyway.

When the DC are home we are all blanket cocoons.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 16/11/2021 13:05

Breaking news!!

HE'S WEARING A JUMPER!!!

dottiedodah · 16/11/2021 13:08

I have his twin here! My dh wfh as well .gets a bit chilly and decides he need the heating on for a bit longer. Won't wear a t shirt under his top .wonders why I don't feel as cold with a vest and top cardi .even ds in his 20s wears a t shirt!

EveningOverRooftops · 16/11/2021 13:13

My DC does this. I have purchased stick on thermometers similar to the old head strip ones you used to be able to get for every room (wilko if you’re interested Wink ) so DC can see each rooms temperature esp their own room and not whine it’s too cold. Right now it’s 20c and the heating isn’t on. It’s not cold, slippers and a jumper are needed though but it’s still not cold. I’m hoping it works as a £600 bill last quarter absolutely decimated my savings.

Thankfully DC has taken to running down whenever the kettle whistles and nabs the rest of the hot water for a hot water bottle so we’re making progress 🤣🤣

HappyBirthdayMrPresident · 16/11/2021 13:14

Same as my daughter moans she is cold but walks about the house with a pair of shorts on Hmm

VividImaginationAgain · 16/11/2021 13:14

I’m currently sitting here in a t-shirt with the heating on. However dh is wearing 3 layers, a jacket and a woolly hat! He really feels the cold and is getting on in years and so I just have to suck it up. We don’t heat the house from 8pm - 8am though.

Rubyflint · 16/11/2021 13:14

Mine is the same and along with his t shirt he is wearing shorts in November in the UK. Drives me potty when he says he’s cold.

I have my own internal menopause heating system so I don’t feel the cold any more.

PickAChew · 16/11/2021 13:16

@Winniemarysarah

I completely disagree with everyone on this thread Grin I absolutely hate wearing thick/multiple layers of clothing. And I refuse to be uncomfortable in my own house. So when I’m home I’m in comfy shorts and t shirts and my heatings on whatever setting I like!
There is a huge difference between shorts and a t-shirt and thick, multiple layers. I hate being completely wrapped up (and it's just more stuff to need to wash) but I'm still wearing full length joggers, a long sleeved mid-weight tee and a vest, plus socks.

I normally have all the windows open, all morning, to air the house but, despite it just being in double figures, out there, there is thick cloud and no sunshine to warm the house through, so we are holed up with the thermostat a little higher than usual.

QuestionableMouse · 16/11/2021 13:17

Good for you. Some of us have sensory issues... I can't bear layers, especially something like leggings where they cling to you.

But... I'm also normally the one turning the heating off or down cause I run warm so it's not such a big deal.

HumbugWhale · 16/11/2021 13:18

Last winter when we were both wfh I bought us both thermal base layers and really warm socks. They keep us really warm. The trick is to avoid getting cold in the first place, so heating on first thing, get iut of hot shower in warm room and get dressed into warm clothes. It is much harder to warm up once you get cold.
