Fed up with unvaccinated colleague isolating

Peevedcolleague · 12/11/2021 16:40

Name changed 'cos I'll probably get slated but aibu to be pissed off about a colleague self isolating yet again while the rest of us have to carry on and pick up the pieces?

A new colleague chose not to be jabbed and is now facing numerous isolation periods at home on full pay where the rest of us have to carry on and cover her workload. Nature of the job means she's likely to be a close contact fairly regularly.

Even if she changed her mind and gets jabbed tomorrow, it'll be 10 weeks minimum before she's exempt from isolation so this could happen several more times yet.

Aibu to feel resentful and wish she bloody well got jabbed like the rest of us?

I think it’s ok to have chosen not to get vaccinated during pregnancy - it can always be done after. It is essentially a live trial after all that we as a country have chosen to take part in. I had my vaccine but was hospitalised both times with severe side effects (1 in 10,000 apparently) due to a rare condition my siblings and I have. My sister was pregnant and the doctor would not give her an alternative vaccine to the one I had. No one in the family felt it was wise for her to get vaccinated incase she miscarried. She worked from home like everyone has, had the baby and got vaccinated.
I’m hugely pro vaccine and immunisations but sometimes people do have a good reason for their choices.

Thefartingsofaofdenmarkstreet · 12/11/2021 17:22

Well ultimately it's her choice not to have it.

But YANBU, if I were in your position I would be right pissed off with this.

Whereismumhiding3 · 12/11/2021 17:23

I can see that work probably won't do this but since she keeps having to isolate the PP makes a good point when s\he said
However, you shouldn't be picking up her work. Just keep doing your own and it shouldn't affect you. And point out to management that they need to put cover in if she is absent. You can't do her job as well as your own.

3luckystars · 12/11/2021 17:23

Management will get sick of it and cut her pay eventually.

PraxisandHypatia · 12/11/2021 17:24

Why does she need to keep isolating? Seems odd. I have chosen not to have the vaccine yet as I'm pregnant but I haven't needed to isolate once, what on earth is she doing to need to take so much time off?

LoveGrooveDanceParty · 12/11/2021 17:24

YANBU - just another example of how the unvaccinated think only of themselves.

Talk to management and ask what they’re doing about the gap in resource, and what they’re going to do to cover it.

Bloodypunkrockers · 12/11/2021 17:24

YANBU

I know it's the isolation rules but she should have to take unpaid leave, or it
Should count as sickness absence

Shes taking the piss

AnyFucker · 12/11/2021 17:25

She should be working from home or taking unpaid leave.

Topseyt · 12/11/2021 17:26

I totally agree with you. How frustrating for everyone. I consider people who are refusing to have the vaccine without a sound medical reason to be extremely selfish.

drpet49 · 12/11/2021 17:26

* YANBU - selfish of colleague in all sorts of ways.*

^I agree. And i would tell her, that is if she actually evens returns to work.

thepeopleversuswork · 12/11/2021 17:27

God here come the “my body, my choice” brigade.

Your body, everyone else’s bloody problem.

Yeah, that will tell her. I am sure she will rush out and get jabbed as a result too. Hmm
NotAnotherPaperclip · 12/11/2021 17:32

YAB extremely U. Her body, her choice. A colleague of mine was in hospital for a fortnight after an allergic reaction to her second vaccine, and is still poorly enough to be on reduced hours. Would you treat her with the same contempt I wonder?

TMChappyascanbe · 12/11/2021 17:33

I agree with PP - Just get on with your own work, and don't do any extra, then it won't affect you at all will it?

LoveGrooveDanceParty · 12/11/2021 17:34

Would you treat her with the same contempt I wonder?

Of course not, why on earth would she? She had the vaccine and was off work through no fault of her own.

nathanandfanny · 12/11/2021 17:35

It is her right not to choose the vaccine but other staff should definitely not be taking up the slack. I agree that you need collectively to ask management to arrange for cover for unvaccinated staff.

@TMChappyascanbe OP has said it is a childcare/education setting so cannot function without staff.
Foolsrule · 12/11/2021 17:37

Just don’t do her work. Make it a management problem.

YABU, I am not anti-vaccination but it'll be a grim day if it ever becomes mandatory to have it. It's up to each person what to have done to their body, even I'm getting sick of people being demonised for not having the covid jab.

You realise it doesn’t work like that in a childcare setting?

If one person is missing, the number of children they look after doesn’t magically decrease to align….

nathanandfanny · 12/11/2021 17:38

And actually she has made a choice for her body but it is essentially a selfish choice. She has chosen not to protect others to protect (as she sees it) herself against the evidence. Many of us who vaccinated did so for other people (elderly relatives/vulnerable friends). I don’t feel this kind of selfish behaviour should be enabled.

coconutmonkey · 12/11/2021 17:38

Yes, YABU.

ilovesooty · 12/11/2021 17:40

All very well to parrot "her body her choice" but her choices are impacting on her colleagues' workload and wellbeing. Management needs to address that.

LoveGrooveDanceParty · 12/11/2021 17:41

And what kind of person works with children - who can’t be vaccinated - and won’t have it?

But hey, what does she care? She’s off work on full pay while everyone else picks up her slack. And management’s enabling it.
