Fed up with unvaccinated colleague isolating

799 replies

Peevedcolleague · 12/11/2021 16:40

Name changed 'cos I'll probably get slated but aibu to be pissed off about a colleague self isolating yet again while the rest of us have to carry on and pick up the pieces?

A new colleague chose not to be jabbed and is now facing numerous isolation periods at home on full pay where the rest of us have to carry on and cover her workload. Nature of the job means she's likely to be a close contact fairly regularly.

Even if she changed her mind and gets jabbed tomorrow, it'll be 10 weeks minimum before she's exempt from isolation so this could happen several more times yet.

Aibu to feel resentful and wish she bloody well got jabbed like the rest of us?

Then they’d just not tell anyone they need to isolate and turn up? People would definitely do that rather than lose income needed for family

Beachcomber · 13/11/2021 18:54

@JassyRadlett

I'm really sorry to hear that you are shut out by your country and wholly sympathise with your situation. Thank you for sympathising with my situation.

Currently in the EU covid recovery certificates are valid for 6 months in most countries and I accept that the science is currently out on whether that period should be extended.

I didn't try to catch covid. Quite the contrary. I tried very hard not to catch it. But I did catch it and was very ill and was relieved that at least once I was through it I was able to travel and live relatively normally for 6 months afterwards. I started to plan a trip to the UK in order to visit my ageing parents who I haven't seen for 2 years only to find out that UK policy does not really allow me to do so despite vaccinated persons being able to do so much more easily even though they pose more of a transmission risk than I currently do.

XenoBitch · 13/11/2021 18:56

@LoveGrooveDanceParty

So you’re saying all unvaccinated people actually do want to get vaccinated *@XenoBitch*?
I never said that. But you said that the majority not having it are doing so because they don't believe in it. So where are the figures to back up your point?
GinPin2 · 13/11/2021 18:58

If it's a school then management/ SLT etc will be aware.

If she's a teacher then her days are numbered, they will get her out somehow.

Sorry, just being cynical.

But yes, you have every right to be very annoyed.

MrsMumlife · 13/11/2021 18:59

YANBU to resent picking up the extra work. However YABU to direct the resentment at the colleague. She's chosen not to have a trial vaccine and that should rightly be her choice. Your issue should be with a dysfunctional rule-set that allows for this to happen. The isolation rule's only goal is to pick out those that don't conform and accept a trial vaccine. If the aim of isolation is to control the spread of the virus then we've really got to ask ourselves why the vaccinated, and most likely asymptomatic, are exempt from isolation rules.

Dguu6u · 13/11/2021 19:01

@XenoBitch here you go: www.iffresearch.com/ons-coronavirus-vaccine-refusal-study/detailed-findings/

“ The most common primary concern (that lead to vaccine refusal) was that participants did not trust that COVID-19 vaccines were safe”

wildchild554 · 13/11/2021 19:01

YABU, I can't have the vaccine due to allergies but when people say people are selfish for not getting it to protect people like myself I'm one the first to pipe that I don't any using people like myself as a reason for someone to get a vaccine, I don't want the responsibility if that person did have a bad reaction to the vaccine, or ended up with a lifelong illness. At the end of the day vaccinated or not anyone who has symptoms I still see as a risk and whether people are vaccinated or not I still take what precautions I can whilst trying to carry on with my life. It's the policy you should be annoyed at not the person, all vaccines carry risk, I have witnessed several unfortunately with my own family so the person has decided what is best for them and their family which is the way it should be.

WildExcuses · 13/11/2021 19:05

Just wonder if the people who refuse vacs would also refuse necessary vacs if they were given a free holiday to somewhere exotic where they required the vacs.

Peoples posts get weirder and weirder. Confused

Liekje · 13/11/2021 19:07

Actually vaccinations to those places aren’t mandatory..

However as stated before being vaccinated shouldn’t give you a free pass to anything you want include working in the office! Because it doesn’t stop you from getting COVID-19 not isolating even when vaccinated is putting more people at risk then necessary

Misty333 · 13/11/2021 19:08

You are not being unreasonable, some people are taking advantage and if they were not on full pay might get jabbed

SingaporeSling01 · 13/11/2021 19:10

I actually have a colleague at work who did a U Turn on vaccination after a work trip to NYC was offered and wouldn’t be available if she weren’t (our US offices will not allow unvaccinated people to enter the office buildings currently)
ilovesooty · 13/11/2021 19:10

Trial vaccine Hmm

There's a nursery near me which has made vaccination mandatory for its staff.

That is not "not believing in a vaccine". Some people are worried about side effects, or the affect it might have on their existing health conditions.

There is a more thorough and up to date (July) on the ONS site, including a spreadsheet that breaks down every reason you can think of.

I can't post screenshots as not on a mobile device.

Where did I say ‘majority’ @XenoBitch?

I very deliberately used the words ‘significant cohort’.

Because there is a significant cohort of people who won’t have the vaccine not because they would if they could, but because they don’t want to, or won’t be told what to do.

We know this full well.

LittleDandelionClock · 13/11/2021 19:19

@Liekje

Let your coworker isolate so she doesn’t pass anything on to others just in case,

Yeah let her self isolate until she is blue in he face.

BUT DO NOT PAY HER FOR BEING OFF!

SusieBob · 13/11/2021 19:19

People like @Beachcomber use language like "experimental" - completely inappropriately- because they know it helps to sow doubt. They hide behind such language to try to appear credible when, when it comes to it, they are just another antivaxxer who has watched one too many conspiracy theory video on YouTube.

These people are perfectly happy to enjoy the benefits to society that we have gained from the responsible majority getting jabbed of course.

TSSDNCOP · 13/11/2021 19:23

7.45 billion doses given worldwide.

Pretty big trial.

JassyRadlett · 13/11/2021 19:23

Two pieces of misinformation here.

First, it’s not a ‘trial vaccine’. All vaccines currently being used have cleared clinical trials.

Second, the suggestion that vaccinated people are an equal risk of transmission. As mentioned upthread, the evidence does not support this - first, because the majority of infections are prevented, and second because of indications that secondary transmission may be much lower outside of close household contact.

TheKeatingFive · 13/11/2021 19:25

Exactly

Where would we be if everyone decided they didn't want the 'experimental vaccine'? Would they be happy to live in perpetual lockdown?

lesleylol · 13/11/2021 19:26

YANBU. She shouldn’t be paid

LittleDandelionClock · 13/11/2021 19:28

@lesleylol

YANBU. She shouldn’t be paid
Exactly. And watch her self isolating episodes stop when she gets fuck-all money for being off. Fucking piss-taker!
TheKeatingFive · 13/11/2021 19:29

Yes, unfortunately they've created a situation where it advantages her not to get the vaccine

If she has been told to isolate by Test & Trace then she has 0% say in that matter.

gamerchick · 13/11/2021 19:31

She doesnt have to if she's vaccinated though.
