Fed up with unvaccinated colleague isolating

799 replies

Peevedcolleague · 12/11/2021 16:40

Name changed 'cos I'll probably get slated but aibu to be pissed off about a colleague self isolating yet again while the rest of us have to carry on and pick up the pieces?

A new colleague chose not to be jabbed and is now facing numerous isolation periods at home on full pay where the rest of us have to carry on and cover her workload. Nature of the job means she's likely to be a close contact fairly regularly.

Even if she changed her mind and gets jabbed tomorrow, it'll be 10 weeks minimum before she's exempt from isolation so this could happen several more times yet.

Aibu to feel resentful and wish she bloody well got jabbed like the rest of us?

I'm surprised they're on full pay - our nhs work you can't come in even if jabbed if pinged (trust policy currently) but you have to say how you're going to use your isolation - eg if you can't work from home you may have to use sick leave or annual leave. This is public sector as well so I imagine fairly standard ?

With a policy like that, it is no wonder people were deleting the Covid app. Being 'pinged' is not even legally binding.

We have one unvaxxed colleague, no one wants to go into the office with her, bloody selfish

Why? Is she actually dangerous?
Supersimkin2 · 12/11/2021 23:10

The unvaccinated are a tapering problem - we’re at the worst, top stage now. They’ll die of Covid at a way faster rate, or more likely survive with acquired immunity, as the months pass.

Either way the threat they pose - whether to our health or work - will decline pretty quickly. They won’t matter any more, except as the odd Fancy That byline obit in the local paper.

🤣 why on Earth not? You’re a bigger risk to her than vice versa. 🙄

The unboosted will soon start to take their place…

Yanbu at all

She’s onto a good thing, isn’t she?

bluetongue · 12/11/2021 23:32

@JesusIsAnyNameFree

Or are you one of the types that think people off work with things like depression are taking the piss too

Are you saying depression is a choice?

As someone on long term medication for depression I think some people do take the piss with sick leave for mental health.

In fact my sick leave record is better than many in my office.

I’ve had a few times off when I had a bit of a breakdown and couldn’t stop crying and every now and then I’m simply exhausted and just can’t face working that day. Apart from that I get out of bed every day and go to work, even when staying in bed and wallowing would be easier, because it’s what I’m paid to do and people rely on me.

JesusIsAnyNameFree · 12/11/2021 23:41

@bluetongue

I don't think it's wise to compare one persons poor mental health with another's. Ever.

Has she actually isolated though? You just say "is facing?"

Also you shouldn't be privy to a colleagues personal medical information so it's none of your business.

She's choosing to stay in a tiny bedsit or whatever in that case. If she had an actual medical reason to shield/be worried about catching corona then I'd have sympathy. Choosing to put yourself that situation with none of the risk means you made your bed, lie in it(with Netflix). Just don't expect full pay. Honestly, 'choosing' to refuse for no reason is the same as tax dodging in my mind. You don't want to do your bit or contribute to society? Then take yourself out completely, don't expect the rest of the world to chip in for you if you can't be arsed doing the bare minimum.

OP has not given a reason for her colleague to have not had the vaccine. It could be medical... and that this person has chosen not to disclose that, because it is not anyone else's business.

As PP's have said, her vaccination status isn't really any of your business - but having to cover her workload during her (presumably multiple?) absences is. You're not being paid to do her job and you need to raise this with your manager. Perhaps your employer can find some temporary cover.

Thwackit · 13/11/2021 00:20

You’re right of course.

I think my view has just been coloured by working with a number of colleagues that are known skivers that use mental health as one of their reasons.

If I was the OP I’d be furious. This doesn’t sound like a sustainable situation and I would hope at the very least being full paid every time they isolate is re-examined.
