To think a discount isn’t embarrassing?

I went out with my friend for lunch today, and as I have meerkat meals (from my v expensive car insurance) we could get our meal 2/4/1 meaning that the price was halved of each of our meals essentially. We went halves on the final bill. All fine.

Well, when I got out the app my friend was mortified saying that it was embarrassing and humiliating. Our bill would’ve only been around 40.00 to be fair, but it ended up being 25! (Drinks not included in deal) So only 12:50 each. We both have good jobs, but I didn’t see the problem in trying to save us some money.

When we got to the car, friend said that discount codes should definitely only be used on things over 100.00?! And it was “mortifying” to see me get out the app for the lady to scan.

So was ibu? I’m not sure?! Friend is acting like she can never go back there again!

She’s batshit.

AnneLovesGilbert · 11/11/2021 14:39

Cheeky cow accepting it while whinging.

TotallySuper · 11/11/2021 14:41

Weird snobby friend, I wouldn't go for lunch with her again.

catchyjem · 11/11/2021 14:42

Definitely not embarrassing to use your code. Your friend is very rude and embarrassing herself.

Tohaveandtohold · 11/11/2021 14:42

I’ll be dropping that friend if I was you. Very ridiculous

Iamanicepersonreally · 11/11/2021 14:42

She’s bonkers

galacticpixels · 11/11/2021 14:43

That's a weird reaction. The discount should be used on whatever they allow you to use it on! Strange of her to make up her own rules. Why would anyone want to pay 20 when they could pay 12:50?

millenialblush · 11/11/2021 14:43

Did she offer to pay the full price for you both instead?

grapewine · 11/11/2021 14:43

Absolutely this.

YANBU.

Funkyslippers · 11/11/2021 14:45

Wow that's insane. I love a discount no matter how small but you saved her £7.50. She should be thanking you.

MrsWhites · 11/11/2021 14:45

I use meerkat meals all the time, in fact it grates on me going to a cinema or for a meal on a Friday when I could have got it half price earlier in the week. You friend is a dick and a snob!

MuffinsAreJustCakesAtBreakfast · 11/11/2021 14:45

Well that is very odd on the part of your friend.

Does she like to pretend that she has a lot of money to impress other people? (in this case you or the staff at the restaurant..?)

How very sad....

ISpyCobraKai · 11/11/2021 14:45

Course it's not, I use discounts if I can find them, and get excited over the new Lidl discount coupons.
I found a hack for discounted McDonald's, absolutely used it!
I'd rather have extra money in my bank.

Starcaller · 11/11/2021 14:47

The heck? God, I'd love it if a friend pitched up with a discount code!

Catflapkitkat · 11/11/2021 14:48

Years ago, I when worked at places that accepted vouchers/newspaper tie ins I wouldn't think anything negative if someone presented a voucher. Only annoying thing is if they present it after you have rung it through the till.

On a personal note, discount code is a good way to sound a new place out. A new restaurant near us did a good discount when opening. I have now had several trips there at full price and it's worth every penny.

IDrinkFromTheKegOfGlory · 11/11/2021 14:49

So she whinged to you afterwards but wasn't morally compromised enough to actually pay the full amount?! 😂

Tal45 · 11/11/2021 14:49

She complained that you saved her money? Wow.

ThinWomansBrain · 11/11/2021 14:50

You should have let her pay her full £20 and left you with a £5 bill - in the interests of saving her feelings of course.

ISpyCobraKai · 11/11/2021 14:51

Tell her you won't use the discount if she gives you the potential savingGrin

MLMshouldbeillegal · 11/11/2021 14:51

Sounds like my niece - DH's brother's daughter. She lives in fear of people thinking she might be poor. She isn't particularly well off, but would NEVER use a discount code. She will not buy any clothes or other goods in the sales. Won't even drop her stuff off at a charity shop in case someone sees her going in. Everything has to be branded, labelled.

There are some very fucked up ideas out there.

ThinWomansBrain · 11/11/2021 14:52

or of course she could have left her £7.50 discount as additional tip for the staff.

MLMshouldbeillegal · 11/11/2021 14:54

Niece would say :

I can afford £20! How dare you insinuate that I am the "type" of person who can't afford £20 and needs a discount to bring it down to an affordable level. Are you saying I don't have money? Are you saying I am poor? I am most definitely NOT poor and I am going to demonstrate my lack of poverty to everyone by shunning discounts so that everyone can see that I am PAYING FULL PRICE because I can most definitely afford to.

(Normal, sane people who are secure in their own skin have none of these hang ups.)

BigYellowHat · 11/11/2021 15:11

She’d loathe me then. When we bought our bed the other week, they already had a discount on it but I just calmly said ‘is there any further movement on that price?’ They gave me an extra £220 off just like that! Better the cash in my pocket I figure 😂

Penistoe · 11/11/2021 15:13

How did you even get her in a chain restaurant to start with? I mean people could have seen her going in there!

Zilla1 · 11/11/2021 15:15

Did she explain the logic behind the £100 threshold?
