To think a discount isn’t embarrassing?

I went out with my friend for lunch today, and as I have meerkat meals (from my v expensive car insurance) we could get our meal 2/4/1 meaning that the price was halved of each of our meals essentially. We went halves on the final bill. All fine.

Well, when I got out the app my friend was mortified saying that it was embarrassing and humiliating. Our bill would’ve only been around 40.00 to be fair, but it ended up being 25! (Drinks not included in deal) So only 12:50 each. We both have good jobs, but I didn’t see the problem in trying to save us some money.

When we got to the car, friend said that discount codes should definitely only be used on things over 100.00?! And it was “mortifying” to see me get out the app for the lady to scan.

So was ibu? I’m not sure?! Friend is acting like she can never go back there again!

Yeah sound like she’s somewhat up her own as and trying to make out that she’s something that she’s not. I use vouchers and apps all the time and regularly negotiate on the price of things too which often works - why wouldn’t you? It’s your hard earned money !

Almostmenopausal · 12/11/2021 21:35

@ISpyCobraKai

Course it's not, I use discounts if I can find them, and get excited over the new Lidl discount coupons. I found a hack for discounted McDonald's, absolutely used it! I'd rather have extra money in my bank.
Please share the McDonalds app! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 Broke widowed mummy!! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻💚

@Simonjt

I love a discount, I’m Asian so its in my blood 😂

Whenever we are planning anything I’ll always look to see if any discount/offers are available. Why would someone not want to save money?!

I love a discount, I’m Asian so its in my blood

Can you imagine if somebody non-Asian said the above? (adjusting the wording slightly, of course). They'd be lynched! GrinWink

janj2301 · 12/11/2021 21:42

The only reason we keep going to Pizza Express is because they keep sending me special offers/discounts

Bertiebiscuit · 12/11/2021 22:10

How are you friends with this snobby sneering money wasting idiot???? I certainly wouldn't be tbh

Kitkat151 · 12/11/2021 22:12

Very snobby behaviour....she wouldn’t be a friend of mine for long

JGB1987 · 12/11/2021 22:32

Omg, who doesn’t like a good discount or 241 in the restaurant? Crazy!
I work in hospitality and can’t see anything wrong with discount codes etc.. I wouldn’t think they are being cheap or stingy if they use a discount.. but we do think that if they basically get the meal for half price and leave zero tip.. I use codes and vouchers myself but always make sure I leave a tip based on the original amount, not the final, discounted price.. not fair on waiting staff in my opinion to leave a quid or two if they’d effectively served you and waited on you for £40-£50 food or drinks.. the order still had to be taken, food and drinks made and served…

Tessabelle1 · 13/11/2021 00:17

Let her pay for her meal separately next time, weirdo!

Thwackit · 13/11/2021 00:22

Wtf is she on about?! Next time, use the 241 and get yours free and she can pay for hers in its entirety Grin

2catsandhappy · 13/11/2021 00:30

Take me out to lunch op! I'll be very grateful and leave a nice tip too.
I love a discount.

Blueink · 13/11/2021 01:49

She should have paid for both of you if she felt this distraught about it

beachtosunset · 13/11/2021 02:09

You can reassure her it will never happen again because she won't be there with you next time.

Her insecurities are her problems - not yours.

Ellejelly · 13/11/2021 06:58

A lot of restaurant workers will actually tell you about any discount codes you could use to get a bigger tip! Not embarrassing at all

lap90 · 13/11/2021 07:08

Oh please!

I have always used discount codes when dining out and the restaurant permits - if they needed 100 quid minimum spend it would say.

Can't say i've ever had complaints using them when dining with others as recently as last week.

HelloDulling · 13/11/2021 07:17

I can understand people who have grown up very poor feeling very self conscious about anything that might indicate they have less money than others. There’s a lot of shame that comes with poverty.

RudestLittleMadam · 13/11/2021 07:34

Your mate is nuttier than squirrel shit. And a cheeky twat to boot, whinging on about being humiliated while accepting the discount on her meal Hmm

Greygreenblue · 13/11/2021 07:40

I take it your friend has never heard the saying look after the pennies and the pounds will look after themselves.

She reminds me a bit of my sister in her 20s. But she has learnt a lot about money and how to make it go further since then.

Gilly12345 · 13/11/2021 07:54

What a snobby ungrateful friend, so when the bill was reduced and paid she paid the whole price?

Discounts are great we all love a bargain.

I can’t believe she complained when you saved yourselves money.

HomeSliceKnowsBest · 13/11/2021 08:01

The wealthiest people I know are always penny pinching and couldn't give a damn. Does she have an inferiority complex?

chaosmaker · 13/11/2021 09:24

@ISpyCobraKai

Crikey, she's embarrassed about using a discount, yet ate at Harvester?Confused I have no problem with eating at Harvester but she's being really weird to suddenly decide she's better than discounts!
Harvester have own discount app anyway!
lottiegarbanzo · 13/11/2021 09:29

I hope she tipped based on the full cost of the meal!

Well off, comfortable, confident people have no hang-ups about this sort of thing (and will often happily wear second hand too).

Only people much closer to poverty care about being perceived as poor.

starlight13 · 13/11/2021 09:53

She sounds weird and the issue is all hers. Who in their right mind wouldn't use a discount? She could have given you £20 but I'm guessing that she only coughed up £12.50?
Also, at the point of paying, she could have piped up with 'oh no, don't worry about the discount, here, I'll pay the difference, my treat.'
I expect that didn't happen either?
But surely she left a big fat tip?

Daddydog · 13/11/2021 09:55

YANBU - you did it tactfully so what's worng with saving money? I have a thrifty friend - love 'em to pieces but I get taken to dinner there's always a deal involved. No issue just that they always feel compelled to let the whole restaurant know - waving a print out shouting "GROUPON!!! We have a 50% off GROUPON... GROUPONNN!" I die a little every time!

Awaywiththefairies1 · 13/11/2021 11:33

Your friend is nuts! Who pays more than they have to? I'd have said if she was that mortified she could have left the difference as a tip for the serving staff who had to deal with the trauma of taking your discount code!

mamatoTails · 13/11/2021 11:37

Not embarrassing at all! Only annoying when you get behind someone in the supermarket queue and they get out their coupons and they take forever to scan! But no, if you've got an app code or voucher use them, why else would they make them, send them to you, gift them etc!
