To think a discount isn’t embarrassing?

I went out with my friend for lunch today, and as I have meerkat meals (from my v expensive car insurance) we could get our meal 2/4/1 meaning that the price was halved of each of our meals essentially. We went halves on the final bill. All fine.

Well, when I got out the app my friend was mortified saying that it was embarrassing and humiliating. Our bill would’ve only been around 40.00 to be fair, but it ended up being 25! (Drinks not included in deal) So only 12:50 each. We both have good jobs, but I didn’t see the problem in trying to save us some money.

When we got to the car, friend said that discount codes should definitely only be used on things over 100.00?! And it was “mortifying” to see me get out the app for the lady to scan.

So was ibu? I’m not sure?! Friend is acting like she can never go back there again!

I remember years ago saving up the Sunday Times Lunch for £5 tokens.
As I was quite hard up I felt slightly embarrassed. Until I read & saw a pic of Princess Anne doing the same. If someone as wealthy as her didn't feel embarrassed then why should I do so I reasoned.

Defo odd of your friend to accept the discount share then moan about it.

@LondonLife3 My husband is in the AA - that sounds like a good deal. Do you mind my asking, do you mention the discount when booking or just show your membership card when you pay?

toolazytothinkofausername · 11/11/2021 17:32

Your friend is being ridiculous!

CommanderBurnham · 11/11/2021 17:54

Next time take the whole meal price off your share of the bill as you do t want to embarrass her.

HaroldSteptoesHorse · 11/11/2021 18:41

I worked in a place where staff teams regularly went out for meals, we sought places that had discounts. One of the team was always mortified (never stopped him coming along though)

Embal1983 · 11/11/2021 18:58

How bizarre! She could have always left the additional £ she saved as a tip if she felt so put out...but she didn’t I guess Grin

Queenslotus · 11/11/2021 22:25

It was the harvester!!

ISpyCobraKai · 11/11/2021 22:29

Crikey, she's embarrassed about using a discount, yet ate at Harvester?Confused
I have no problem with eating at Harvester but she's being really weird to suddenly decide she's better than discounts!

silentpool · 11/11/2021 22:33

Always get a discount, why wouldn't you? I need to stretch my money so I try not to pay full price. I do it at work where I can too - got a decent discount on a booking for work. Boss asked if I'd got the best price and I'd got both the early bird and group discounts 😇...certainly looks good when others don't bother.

Mumoblue · 11/11/2021 22:34

YANBU. I’d not be able to hear her say that without laughing. Hark at miss-la-di-dah over here, too good to use a discount code! Grin

Getting money off is just smart, not embarrassing.

TimeFlysWhenYoureHavingRum · 11/11/2021 22:47

Tory MPs put in expense claims for 50p boxes of paper clips without embarrassment. Paying for anything (let alone half price) is seemingly a mugs game! No need to be ashamed op! Your friend is being ridiculous.

mogsrus · 11/11/2021 22:53

Let her be mortified then, if it's on the table, take it, I really don't understand her problem,& that IS a problem.

cherish123 · 12/11/2021 17:43

Everyone else uses discounts. I've never heard of anyone feeling embarrassed by it.

Yesyouarebu · 12/11/2021 18:05

Your friend is crazy! I don't buy anything without checking for a discount code first! Haha! The amount I've saved doing that is crazy!

Thatsnotall · 12/11/2021 18:23

She is an idiot.

fetchacloth · 12/11/2021 18:47

OFGS some people, like your friend, are so precious.🙄
I presume the same friend didn't object to taking the discount though?
Thought not...😉

wentworthinmate · 12/11/2021 19:04

I hope she left a fabulous tip!

JustDoingMe · 12/11/2021 19:11

Your friend sounds like a pretentious fool

Callingallskeletons · 12/11/2021 19:27

She’s utterly batshit 😂🙈

gigi556 · 12/11/2021 20:04

You're friend is STRANGE.

I had 6x £8 off when you spend £40 at Waitrose that are expiring on Sunday. I went to the self checkout and checked out in 5 transactions around £40. I bought a bunch of booze for the holidays mostly. I LOVE SAVING MONEY.

cakewench · 12/11/2021 20:09

First of all, YANBU regardless.

But after finding out it was the Harvester, honestly, they literally live off of various offers. Anyone paying full price there just hasn't done their homework. Grin

Suzanne999 · 12/11/2021 20:16

Stupid woman. If she feels awful about saving £12 odd I suggest she donates it to a food bank or food charity.
Got no patience for people like this.

PraiseTheSunshine · 12/11/2021 20:43

Why would someone want to pay more money for the same thing? She sounds a bit batshit, to be honest.

dayswithaY · 12/11/2021 20:45

Interestingly enough, when I worked at a clothing store with a generous staff discount, I had people crawling out the woodwork to use it. Sibling's neighbour's best friend would be asking me to get them a dress or pair of jeans. I wish they'd had such snobby attitudes!
