To think a discount isn’t embarrassing?

I went out with my friend for lunch today, and as I have meerkat meals (from my v expensive car insurance) we could get our meal 2/4/1 meaning that the price was halved of each of our meals essentially. We went halves on the final bill. All fine.

Well, when I got out the app my friend was mortified saying that it was embarrassing and humiliating. Our bill would’ve only been around 40.00 to be fair, but it ended up being 25! (Drinks not included in deal) So only 12:50 each. We both have good jobs, but I didn’t see the problem in trying to save us some money.

When we got to the car, friend said that discount codes should definitely only be used on things over 100.00?! And it was “mortifying” to see me get out the app for the lady to scan.

So was ibu? I’m not sure?! Friend is acting like she can never go back there again!

My dh finds it slightly embarrassing also. Similar to what MLM say. Doesn’t stop me though!

Fairyliz · 11/11/2021 15:19

I’ve got a friend like this. When I first met her I assumed she came from a fairly ‘posh’ background, only did her shopping at Waitrose, John Lewis etc. I don’t think she has ever been in Aldi and she refused to come into TKMaxx.
However the opposite is true she was bought up in a really rough council estate. Having moved away from there she seems terrified that anyone would think that she is poor.
Apparently this is quite common the aristocracy wear clothes and pass them down the generations, people on benefits wouldn’t be seen dead in second hand stuff.

IntermittentParps · 11/11/2021 15:23

@AnneLovesGilbert

Cheeky cow accepting it while whinging.
Yes, this. I mean, what was stopping her voluntarily paying her full share?
LampLighter414 · 11/11/2021 15:23

Is her name Hyancinth?

I didn't know what a 'meerkat meal' was, so I looked up what they eat...

As natural omnivores, a meerkat's natural diet consists mainly of insects, although they'll also happily eat small rodents, fruit, birds, eggs, lizards and scorpions. Meerkats will naturally spend much of their time digging in the sand in pursuit of prey.

Actually I wouldn't pay anything for any of that. 🤮 (Well maybe the eggs if they were poached properly.)
Did you have to dig it up out of the sand too? 😳

TheYearOfSmallThings · 11/11/2021 15:26

She's crazy! A bargain is a bargain.

MatildaIThink · 11/11/2021 15:26

I earn six figures, I still use discount codes, why would I pay more than I need to, to a large national or multi national chain? I would much rather get a £40 meal reduced to £25 and leave the staff a £20 tip.

girlmom21 · 11/11/2021 15:27

She could've left a tip that made up the difference is she was that mortified.

I love a good discount.

ThinWomansBrain · 11/11/2021 15:27

Fairyliz - reminds me of my sister, she doesn't like shopping much to start with, so not an activity we do often together.
I did take her in to a branch of TK Maxx about fifteen years ago, I don't think she's repeated that experience, and the horror on her face when I darted into primark because I wanted something particular when we were out together a few weeks ago - she eventually said "it's almost like a normal shop".

JuneOsborne · 11/11/2021 15:28

My DH is a bit like this. We go to a restaurant where if you have an app, you get 15% off the bill. He hates doing it! It's so weird, isn't it?

Derbee · 11/11/2021 15:29

Why would meerkat meals exist if people didn’t use it? Your friends a weirdo. Next time, use it on your meal and let her pay full price for hers

CrumpleHornedSnowcack · 11/11/2021 15:30

maybe suggest she donate the saving to a charity to make it more worthwhile

LittleDandelionClock · 11/11/2021 15:31

Agree with a pp. Moaning about it and gasping, but still accepting it! PMSL!

My DD got us shit loads of discounts when she was at uni, and working for a certain employer. You bet we grabbed every penny we could!

The other day, my DH saw a box set of blu ray that he wanted - of one of his fave programmes - and it was £60. He searched through the internet, and found a discount code for it. Got £17 off. Over a quarter!

I do love a good discount!

Bananaman123 · 11/11/2021 15:33

The only loser here is your idiot friend. Must be nice to throw money away eh. Next time charge her half at full price and you take all the discount

72WayTooCool · 11/11/2021 15:33

Yep. Mad as. Find a new lunch friend.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 11/11/2021 15:37

I always look for a discount code and sometimes choose the venue accordingly
My DS has a blue light card and other DS has Uni days
We got 25% off in GBK last week( and will go again)

Pippa12 · 11/11/2021 15:39

Just suggests she leaves the discounted money as a tip for the staff!

Simonjt · 11/11/2021 15:41

I love a discount, I’m Asian so its in my blood 😂

Whenever we are planning anything I’ll always look to see if any discount/offers are available. Why would someone not want to save money?!

I think it's perfectly reasonable to use it, it's not like you were trying to haggle at the end of the meal. the company agree to sign up for the discount scheme so were obv happy to accept half price?
ColdTattyWaitingForSummer · 11/11/2021 15:45

(Meerkat meals is a reward for buying your insurance through a certain comparison site. You get 2 for 1 on meals at certain restaurants midweek. Nothing to do with what the little furry creatures eat 😂)

ExPatHereForAChat · 11/11/2021 15:47

I love a discount code. No shame or embarrassment on my part.
Actually, I'd feel guilty of not using a code and feeling I'd wasted money

Chloemol · 11/11/2021 15:48

Tell you friend you are happy to do the discount on your bot in the future and she can pay hers in full

She’s nuts

FourteenSixteenTwentyTwo · 11/11/2021 15:50

Haha. I'm one of those annoying people who will google discount codes for just about everything. She's completely batshit - you have to be a particular type of stupid (not snobby, just stupid) to pay more than you actually need to for something. In fact I'm not even sure who would be judging her for it. Definitely not the staff who will have this day in/day out.

As an aside, if it was so embarrassing why didn't she just offset the discount and leave a really large tip?

BarbaraofSeville · 11/11/2021 15:52

If it was a chain restaurant it's all in their marketing and pricing. Food and drink is usually more expensive because they expect you to get some sort of discount at off peak times. It also encourages people to go at quieter times to increase sales.

Modern day definition of more money than sense is to pay full price for something where discounts like this are commonly available.

SapereAude · 11/11/2021 15:53

How bizarre.
I've just bought loads of meal offers from BuyAGift ready for when we go to London. 4 courses in places like Ask, Prezzo, etc when you'd usually pay the same just for your main and a drink.
Friend is loopy
