To wonder who is the best (or worst I guess!) bad guy in TV or film?

So me and DH rewatching TWD and just got to the first meeting of Negan again. Both episodes give me absolute chills and make me feel sick watching, not even from the gore.

I think he's the worst villain I've seen on TV, at the start anyway.

Who's your favourite (or worst)?

Two characters in The Green Mile, 'Wild Bill' the murderer and Percy the sadistic guard. Brilliantly acted and very affecting.

(If you haven't ever seen it, do.)

Kanaloa · 10/11/2021 12:39

Yes I’ve always rooted for Hannibal too! I think the key there is that he kills pretty unpleasant people a lot of the time - plus he had other character traits. He loves art, music etc - it’s when a character is just pointlessly evil that it’s a bit blah.

I get a pp point about t-bag and he was a villain you love to watch in s1 but I felt early prison break was packed with bad guys. There are more morally grey characters than good! Although that’s part of why it was so enjoyable. But then after s1 it just went downhill so fast.

peaceanddove · 10/11/2021 12:46

Always liked Hannibal Lecter. He has his own very (bizarre) strict code of ethics. In the book Hannibal Rising he is definitely a hero character.

20thCenturyGhosts · 10/11/2021 12:46

@Gottahavehighhopes @BadPlaceJanet I totally agree re Drax and Moriaty. They were my first thought too. In North Water I couldn't get my head around the fact it was Colin Farrell- he was utterly animal, no moral core at all.
Andrew Scott as Moriarty was an amazing villain- I can never quite trust him in anything else- he has menace behind his smile!

BeyondShrinks · 10/11/2021 12:58

Does Dexter count as a villain? Or not, as the protagonist?

AFS1 · 10/11/2021 13:28

The child catcher in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang still gives me nightmares to this day!

Also agree Negan and Andrew Scott’s Moriarty.

I would also say Heath Ledger’s Joker was amazing - he really captured the unpredictability of the character.

WingingItSince1973 · 10/11/2021 13:41

Came to say Andrew Scott as Moriarty. He is pure evil genius and does horrendous things but can't help love it when he's in the show. Plus he's gorgeous 😍

namechangetheworld · 10/11/2021 13:43

The Governer was always my favourite TWD villain, incredibly entertaining, and I was gutted when the whole prison arc ended. Definitely the highlight of the show to me. Negan was scary at first but is rather tedious albeit hot now they've attempted to redeem him.

My vote goes to Guy Pearce as The Reverend in Brimstone. Horrifying character and a brilliant performance.

Toastytoads · 10/11/2021 13:47

The buddy Mick Taylor in Wolf Creek. Pure Evil

Toastytoads · 10/11/2021 13:48

BADDY not buddy

FirewomanSam · 10/11/2021 13:51

Umbridge from Harry Potter

Came here to say this. I always thought Voldemort, Bellatrix Lestrange and the like were ridiculous panto-like villains but Umbridge was genuinely horrifying and made me feel angry reading about her!

FirewomanSam · 10/11/2021 13:54

Oh and the Mayor from Buffy! Gotta love a villain with high standards and very clear principles (even if most of those principles are evil and batshit), and he always seemed like he was just having a generally great time. Made him both terrifying and highly entertaining to watch.

Putonabrew · 10/11/2021 13:59

Oh my God yes. He gives me the heebie jeebies. Chilling. Also, Kevin Bacon in Sleepers was just horrifying. Can’t watch him in those phone adverts without thinking of him as a villain.

Kanaloa · 10/11/2021 14:07

Yes forgot about Kevin Bacon in sleepers - the bit I always find most horrifying in the book is when John and Tommy confront him (when they’re grown up) and realise he barely remembers them. He had ruined their entire life and shaped them as people but to him they were really just faces in the crowd.

Corrag · 10/11/2021 14:07

Another vote for T-Bag, I mean he was revolting but amusing at the same time.

Negan was too disturbing for me, it got to the stage where I was only watching it in the vain hope someone would bash his brains in. Did anyone get him in the end?

knackeredcat · 10/11/2021 14:10

Combo - This Is England, more so in the series as time went on

Servalan - Blake's 7 (I wanted to be her, probably still do Grin)

Khan - Star Trek Original Series and Star Trek II - The Wrath of Khan

Agree with both your choices, @RobertaFirmino - T-Bag and the Freak are both mesmerisingly evil! On that note and staying with PCBH baddies - Nola McKenzie, Lou Kelly, Bev Baker, Kate Petersen (inmates), Jock Stewart, Len Murphy and Ernest Craven (utterly repellent screws)

CoalCraft · 10/11/2021 14:21

Tommy DeVito in Goodfellas. Terrifying.

BeyondShrinks · 10/11/2021 14:37

Kevin spacey in... everything?

XelaM · 10/11/2021 14:40

Ralph Fiennes in "The Schindler's List". It's absolutely the most uncanny spectacular performance. One of the survivors had a panic attack when she met him on set because he was so like the real Amon Goeth

VillainouslyGood · 10/11/2021 14:45

@HoseMeDownWithHolyWater

I thought Negan was brilliant.

I hated him with a passion.

But my vagina really enjoyed it when he smiled.

🤣🤣🤣

Yes I agree, he played the part incredibly for me because I hated him so much after only one episode! Never had a feeling like it about a TV baddie before, a real "wow he is absolute evil".

ImUninsultable · 10/11/2021 14:45

The Reverse Flash from The Flash tv show. Won't say his alter ego to avoid spoilers but he was a great villain.
Also, Zoom and his alter ego. Great villain.

Not sure if he would ever actually go down in history as a great villain but I just cant get over Grant Ward in Agents of Shield. The betrayal and how long he faked the good guy for. Cant get past that!

When I saw your thread title my first thought was Negan.

I’ve just watched S7 E1 again and I could barely look at the screen. He’s so terribly cruel. Poor Glenn.

GrouchyKiwi · 10/11/2021 15:50

Umbridge for me too. She's scary because she exists.

Grant Ward really upset me because the actor is so hot. Grin

LivingDeadGirlUK · 10/11/2021 18:42

In the xfiles there was a guy who could start fires that terrified me. Still gives me shudders now!
