To think Dumbledore was a massive cheater?

Just finished watching the first Harry Potter film on TV and forgot about the injustice for the Slytherins at the end. I have changed my name in solidarity.

So the Slytherins get the most House Points (presumably fairly as most of the professors at Hogwarts could barely hide their disdain for Slytherin House so wouldn’t have been dishing out points to them for no reason) and are sat there enjoying their win of the House Cup, and celebrating with the room decorated in their House colours, and then former Gryffindor Dumbledore just decides (even though the school year was officially over!!) to throw out an unreasonable amount of points to Harry, Hermione and Ron drawing them level with Slytherin, and then a further 10 points to Neville pushing Gryffindor over the edge and into the win. And then, just to rub salt into the wound, publicly humiliated them by casting a spell to replace all the Slytherin colours with the Gryffindor colours and gives them the award instead and they all celebrate, including him and most of the teachers, and Slytherin has to sit there and just accept it??

AIBU to think WTAF and that was very unfair and he was biased by doing this and it’s no wonder the Slytherins were openly hostile and dismissive of him after that!? I’d be fuming if I were a Slytherin student and if I were a parent of a Slytherin student I’d be marching up to the school myself and having a word with the head.

Slytherins are portrayed badly the whole time. Especially in later books when they all left the battle of Hogwarts. Not one stayed behind. Not one of them joined Dumbledores army? There should have been some good Slytherins around.
But Dumbledore is always a massive dick. He comes across all grandfatherly but actually is really manipulative of Harry, asks a 15 year old student to risk his life and never tells the whole story.

Strawbales · 07/11/2021 18:32

I think the treatment of Slytherin does show how people can become a self fulfilling prophecy, but I think it’s a children’s book so despite what JK Rowling says, she perhaps didn’t know it would take on the depth it did.
@Bluntness100 so are over half the things on this forum.

You don’t have to click and throw in your bitter old two-pence worth, you know.
Too true!

And I'm very sure Bluntness knows you can make stuff up on here...

MyButteredBread · 07/11/2021 18:34

None of the good guys were perfect. Most of the baddies were shades of grey. Makes it more interesting to read/watch!

MrsGeralt · 07/11/2021 18:34

Yeah dumbledore is a bit of a prick.

SecretSpAD · 07/11/2021 18:34

At risk of derailing....It has always irritated me somewhat that Hermione wasn't in Ravenclaw.

She said her dream was that she'd be signing a cheque or something and the person would say "Rowling? I read your book, I really liked it!"
girlmom21 · 07/11/2021 18:35

Dumbledore didn't to it to be horrible to Slytherin, he did it to get Harry on side, like every good thing that happened to Harry, really.

He was very self-serving and played the long game.

But then I suppose he died for the cause ultimately.

WheelieBinPrincess · 07/11/2021 18:35

No one cares about Hufflepuff do they 😂

WonderfulYou · 07/11/2021 18:36

YANBU this part ruins the entire movie. He could have easily awarded the points before the winners were announced but he decided to wait until he got their hopes up and then broke them down - prick!

The Sorting Hat did consider putting her in there, but decided on Gryffindor. You can reason with the Hat to a degree, as Harry did, so I'm guessing that she thought she could continue to study a lot wherever she was, but in Gryffindor she would have a better chance to develop her sense of bravery and valour.

They're just the average kids who never get involved in much or do massively well or terribly aren't they Grin
TheLeadbetterLife · 07/11/2021 18:38

@SickAndTiredAgain

The timing wasn’t great but given that Harry, Ron and Hermione saved the wizarding world from Voldemort returning, I’m not sure you can say it was an unreasonable amount of points.
It's hilarious that all they got for saving the wizarding world is some house points. Not even a mention in the local paper.
ParishSpinster · 07/11/2021 18:40

DID YOU PUT YOUR NAME IN THE GOBLET OF FIIIIIIYYYUUURRRRR HARRY!

of course Dumbledore is a massive cheat. Big old Cheaty McCheaterson.

Waahingwashingwashing · 07/11/2021 18:40

If Harry was a horcrux - the one that Voldemort never meant to make - could the Dursley’s have been horrible because they were living with a horcrux? Look at what it did to Ron having the thing around his neck

You have blown my mind

I love hufflepuff. Hard working, kind and loyal. That's what I'd want in a friend/partner and it's the house I'd want to be in if I could choose. Although I think I'd be in Gryffindor. I'm not brave but definitely hot headed and impulsive.

YANBU

Dumbledore behaved appallingly on several occasions, it's never rested easy with me that he's seen as a kindly old man when actually he's frequently a manipulative shit.

My dh is a Slytherin, he says HP fans treat him differently as soon as they find out 😂

OH. MY. GOD! You're completely right!
whistleryukon · 07/11/2021 18:42

They did save the entire wizarding universe though, for that school year at least. Although Harry was always getting preferential treatment, even from his best mate's own mum.

That's a really good point. But I don't think so because it didn't have that effect on the people he boarded with, and he spent more time with them.

It did give him some blinding headaches though.

They weren’t very nice before though. In the first chapter of the first book, it’s pre Harry arriving and McGonagall watches them all day and tells Dumbledore they’re awful.
megletthesecond · 07/11/2021 18:47

Didn't Snape have to favour Slytherin to put everyone off the scent?

Waahingwashingwashing · 07/11/2021 18:47

I do know they were horrible but wonder if he being a horcrux made them worse
