The Labour Party are unelectable. Can they turn it around? What would they need to do to gain your trust?

After another week of corrupt shenanigans from the Tories (last week was allowing literal shit pumping into watercourses, this week attempting to set aside a finding of dodgy dealings) we would still be stuck with them if there was a snap election tomorrow.

The Labour brand has become far too toxic. Keir is next to useless and all of them listen to the wrong people instead of instinctively knowing what to fight for. If they can turn it around and rebuild trust it won't be a quick or easy job. They have lost all credibility.

What do they need to do to rebuild trust or is it too late?

For me they need to start with the following:

  • Get a leader with charisma and strong values surrounding fairness. The current one just doesn't cut it.
  • know wtf a woman is. Stop trying to erase natal women as a sex class.

What's on your wishlist for a credible alternative to the Tories?

I thought KS was the answer unfortunately he isn’t up against BJ you need someone who is more charismatic I thought him being the opposite would work it isn’t. KS with his media training is excruciating to watch at times

Push the left back to the back benches or preferably out of the party

Move to the centre like it or not we are a centre/centre right voting country not a country of extreme politics

Forget pandering to what’s being enforced on social media ie. women can have a penis nonsense

Sack Angela Rayner

balonsz · 06/11/2021 11:36

Labour is dead, there needs to be a split & a new party. I won't vote labour now because of all the self id stuff but my sibling thinks Keir is not left enough. You can't win as no person or party will ever be perfect & that's what identity politics is.

Gingernaut · 06/11/2021 11:37

Stop the UK becoming a tax and offshore financial haven.

Prevent those who aren't British citizens from buying properties they'll never live in.

Stop shell companies owning property - have someone's actual name and address listed on deeds and leases and not just an accountant

Reform the CMS - prevent dodgers from leaving the country, confiscate passports and prevent 'self employed' loopholes from keeping children in poverty

More state boarding schools for the gifted - seriously. Peer pressure is one of the reasons intelligent children drop out, especially in inner cities - give them different peers and they have a better chance to shine.

Allow the less academically gifted to drop all but the essential subjects (English, Mathematics and Genersl Science) and provide vocational, 'practical' courses earlier.

@PermanentTemporary

I'd vote Labour because of Keir Starmer, he's an intelligent man with a normal amount of integrity, decisive and responsible, looks for solutions rather than parroting soundbites

What I don't understand is why nobody else seems to feel the same.

I don’t think he has integrity at all. I don’t think he has the courage of his convictions and I think he’s pretty weak and spineless.

I can’t bring myself to vote Tory but there is absolutely no way I’ll vote for a party who support self ID and the dismantling of sex based rights. I’ll be spoiling my ballot paper, which is something I’m horrified about having to do, as women died for me to be able to vote, but as those same women said, ‘no self respecting woman should wish or work for the success of a party that ignores her sex’.

ilovesooty · 06/11/2021 11:37

@LadyWithLapdog

They aren’t Tories and I’ll keep supporting them.

I don’t understand how the Tories can trample over everything and they’re still voted in.

The female/gender stuff is just a MN obsession.

Agreed.
PinkiOcelot · 06/11/2021 11:37

I honestly think this is the worst government we have ever had. They are the biggest shower of shit ever. The lot of them.

I too quite like Sir Keir.

TheWholeWorld · 06/11/2021 11:37

They need to stop taking people's votes for granted basically.

Women, working class people, a lot of ethnic minorities. All had a natural home in Labour - lots of MPs had a background of campaigning for rights, involved in solidarity movements, improving working conditions.

Where has that gone? They don't do that any more, instead they bang on about stuff that 90% of the population has no interest in. They treat people like victims, and tell them they are oppressed and their life circumstances condemn them. How does that resonate with people who have worked hard for a good life and give their children a good life?

People want jobs in their local area, that pay adequately and are secure. They want decent housing, not left to swing in the wind with unsellable flats after Grenfell. They want local services that will help them, not have to queue outside the GP at 8am to get an appointment.

balonsz · 06/11/2021 11:37

If you can vote for Tory as an alternative then you don't stand for labour values.

What are labours values now?

balonsz · 06/11/2021 11:39

I like Keir & think he would be a good PM.

balonsz · 06/11/2021 11:40

They need to accept that Brexit has happened

They needed to accept this a while ago.

User135644 · 06/11/2021 11:40

@HeddaGarbled

Get a leader with charisma

I prefer politicians with morality and intelligence to charisma but I’m clearly in the minority.

Demanding charismatic politicians is how you end up with fools like Boris running the country.
jewel1968 · 06/11/2021 11:41

If the Tories win the next election they will have been in power for 19 years (taking us to 2029). That has NEVER happened before in the UK. And yet I think it will happen. History in the making.

Viviennemary · 06/11/2021 11:42

Replace Angela Raynor for a start. I wouldn't vote Labour with folk like her in prominent positions.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 06/11/2021 11:42

They're certainly not unelectable to me. Keir Starmer doesn't inspire me a great deal but I'd walk over broken glass to vote Labour in over the Tories.

amazeandastonish · 06/11/2021 11:42

Move back to the centre left

They've gone way too far left

Know what they stand for instead of jumping on every bandwagon there is

Get rid of Angela

IGotHam · 06/11/2021 11:43

They need to recognise what a woman is. I would never vote Tory, I'll have to spoil my ballot paper for the first time ever.

User135644 · 06/11/2021 11:43

@jewel1968

I think they are on their last legs. I think they have no presence. I read Dom Cummings recently saying they need a woman leader and Boris finds women difficult to deal with. Cummings thinks Nandy would be good. I don't like her. None of the women labour shadow bench appeal to me. And none of the men either.

I can't help thinking about stuff labour didn't do when they were in power. And stuff they did do e.g. PFI

Perhaps it's time for a new party?

Andy Burnham would be ok but there's too many factions within Labour. How can Blair and Corbyn's politics function in the same party? Starmer might be more in the middle but that runs the risk of not standing for anything.
OhWhyNot · 06/11/2021 11:44

You want Labour to be in power or not

Voters in their millions voted for BJ and will again it’s irrelevant that some think he is an idiot he is an incredible politician (as in he understands how politics plays out not great as a political leader)

balonsz · 06/11/2021 11:44

the majority want centre left, not extreme left

crunchypeanutbutterontoast · 06/11/2021 11:44

I think a big hurdle to having an electable Labour government is the right wing press - the anti-left narrative is relentless.

MrsSkylerWhite · 06/11/2021 11:46

Start listening to what voters actually want rather than lecturing at them and telling them what they ought to want.

jewel1968 · 06/11/2021 11:46

Also it is worth considering that in 2027 (under Corbyn) labour got a higher number of votes than it did under Blair/Brown/Milliband. It also experienced the greatest swing to Labour since the swing to Atlee. We need to understand why and why did it change so dramatically in the 2019 election. Does labour really understand what resonates with voters? Does any party?

HanukahMatata · 06/11/2021 11:47

Wouldn't have voted for Labour under JC, mainly due to anti semitism even though identify far more with their policies. Voted Lib Dem because of Labour anti semitism and their stance on Europe.
More inspired by Keir Starmer and how he is tackling antisemitism.
I probably would vote Labour now but wish they'd be more pro-Europe.

TreaslakeandBack · 06/11/2021 11:47

I like Keir but I don’t agree with a lot of Labour policy. I am slightly right of centre I think but don’t agree with this government either. A Tory government led by someone who isn’t corrupt or a Labour government much further to the right is my wish. I voted Lib Dem last time but know that’s a waste- I’m in a swing seat.
I want private options- schools, health etc. But reasonable, not wasteful funding for those who need a state option.
I want a good relationship with the EU (was a Remainer but accept that ship has sailed). I want to protect the environment but not at the expense of freedom or the economy. I want a party who protect women’s rights while accepting the choice of people who want to live differently. Eg women’s safe spaces remain but alternative space for those who don’t identify with the sex they were born into.

Porfre · 06/11/2021 11:49

Starmer does have integrity.

He just doesnt capture the headlines in the papers. And politics in this country is heavily influenced by the media. If the papers got behind Labour they'd win.

Currently the Conservatives can do what ever they want and they know they'll get away with it. Its sickening the amount of corruption.
