But it's all very simple, darlings. Just convert your Bentleys so they run on excess wine and blur cheese from some of your estates.

I don't see why poor eco-saviour Charles is not getting the adulation he clearly feels he so richly deserves, but there's no oik like an ungrateful oik.

99victoria · 06/11/2021 09:36

Definitely not defending them but out of interest, I have been looking to buy tickets for me and OH to take the train to Glasgow from the South Coast- these were my only options

Running a private plane wouldn’t cost more ? Would the money come out their pockets ?
99victoria · 06/11/2021 09:50

As I said - I'm not defending them - but if the government want us to get serious about these issues, they need to improve public transport. As it stands it is cheaper for us to fly to Glasgow than to take the train

@KeflavikAirport

Just coming on to say FUCK JEFF BEZOS AND HIS PENIS ROCKET AND AMAZON PRIME AND SELLING POINTLESS MADE IN SWEATSHOP SHITE.
I bloody hate Amazon and Bezos. I think I've resorted to using Amazon 3 times in the last year or so, and I avoid it unless I really can't find an alternative.
DdraigGoch · 06/11/2021 10:07

@CallMeRisley

Does anyone know how Greta Thunberg travelled?
She was pictured taking the train from London to Glasgow. I presume she arrived in London via Eurostar. There are times where she hasn't considered all of the indirect consequences (such as who was going to sail that boat back across the Atlantic and how they were going to get there) but she certainly tries to practice what she preaches. No hypocrisy from her.

I found an advanced ticket for £135 return, but I had to book weeks in advance to get it.

Any government with a serious commitment to slowing global warming would massively subsidise rail travel and raise the money to do it by taxing flights.

LakieLady · 06/11/2021 10:09

Sorry, meant to add, I could get a return flight for £38!

DdraigGoch · 06/11/2021 10:13

A lot of "doing something for the environment" seems to involve passing the problem to someone else.
I'm pretty sure the UK sends all our recycling overseas probably to countries we think criticise for pollution and carbon emissions
Indeed, we taxed out steelworks out of this country so we now buy steel from China instead. And blame them for the pollution caused. Out of sight, out of mind.

You're correct about "recycling" too. There have been dodgy firms contracted by a few councils in the UK to "recycle" plastic waste who just dump it. This is why I do everything I can not to use products which come in plastic in the first place. We need more reusable containers, just like milk bottles get used 17 times.

Hairbrush123 · 06/11/2021 10:14

Boris will be telling us next to give up our holidays abroad to save the planet Hmm

Stath · 06/11/2021 10:15

Carbon offsetting reminds me of the historical literal whipping boy. The rich and powerful delegating punishment and sanctions to the poor.

On a lighter note, Andy Burnham has the longest eyelashes in the land. DH has known him professionally for years and says up close they rival Mr Snuffleupagus‘s.

Whammyyammy · 06/11/2021 10:19

Seeing all the private jets parked up on the news fir COP 26 really bought it h9ne how these world leaders and celebs think climate change is just for us plebs.

Jeff bezos being there too!! Really? He flew in on his private jet to lecture the peasants and just a few months ago flew to space on his rocket to see what it was like! Love to see how big a carbon footprint thst was, let alone the cost when there's millions starving. Hypocrites the lot of them

MLMshouldbeillegal · 06/11/2021 10:20

Why single out Charles and Boris?

The WORST offender was Biden. He brought Airforce One, and at least two other planes containing staff/minions. Landed in Edinburgh and was staying close by, and travelled across to Glasgow in a 32 car motorcade.

I live under the Glasgow flightpath and last weekend was a constant stream of private jets and larger aircraft from all over the world, making special journeys to ferry leaders to COP. Did Bangladesh's President, or Narendra Modi, or the Australian PM really need to bring their own planes when there are scheduled flights into Heathrow and regular trains/planes on to Scotland?

Yes Boris and Charles are hypocritical. But they are FAR from alone and not the worst offenders.

OhWhyNot · 06/11/2021 10:30

With the advancements in modern technological there was no reason for so many to fly in

Was just an exercise in postering

It should have been that all leaders meet through screens this didn’t have to be a group of people crowded around a laptop but huge screens even using holographs

Utterly ridiculous and made a mockery of what it was about

BigYellowHat · 06/11/2021 11:14

YANBU but I’m in such two minds about this. They can’t exactly fly on normal planes because of the risk of a terror attacks so it would put regular people at risk. I would personally have far more respect for them if they used Zoom or Teams to attend the conference but I can at least see the reasoning, even if I don’t like it.

Before I get told off, please remember that I voted YANBU!!

BigFatLiar · 06/11/2021 11:15

@LadyTiredWinterBottom2

Urgh. Get on a fucking train like the rest of us.
If the alternative was sharing a lift with BJ I'd let Prince Charles off on that.

He flew BA to Malaga a month ago so how would this be different?
ssd · 06/11/2021 11:22

I really wonder what David Attenborough makes of this private jet travel? He must be speaking to the likes of Prince Charles and want to ask him what the hell he's doing.

That's the problem, isn't it. Cheap Advance tickets are sold according to a quota but once that quota is full you can only buy at the full price. Trains out of Euston are fully booked so it's difficult to get a cheap ticket. Until HS2 comes and yields a substantial boost in capacity, prices will remain high. Lumo to Edinburgh might work though.

They can fly on normal planes. I was cabin crew for two decades, many a royal or prime minister flew. They brought their own bodyguards. And all planes have terrorist prevention and threat procedures - have had for years now.
KittenCatcher · 06/11/2021 11:32

118 private jets were used, bunch of bloody hippocrites

BigYellowHat · 06/11/2021 11:33

@Hairbrush123 All I’m doing is suggesting why their staff may try to justify it. I want to make it clear (as I stated in my post) that I don’t think it’s acceptable.

ssd · 06/11/2021 11:41

I can just imagine Boris sitting in the Garrick club with his expensive food and wine, fresh off his private jet from the climate conference, guffawing at how easily the little people are taken in.

Yes, but then they wouldn't have got to enjoy strutting round the world they're professing to save

Anyway it's really not been received the way they hoped has it? We were all supposed to follow their example of "caring", and instead everyone's (rightly) criticising their hypocrisy

ssd · 06/11/2021 12:50

Yes, i think they have read the room wrong. Again. But what do they care??
