Golden syrup tins WTF

Needed some golden syrup for a recipe (not something I’d usually buy and I didn’t grow up with it) and I got the tin instead of the plastic bottle because it was cuter and recyclable/reusable. What in the actual fuck? This is the most stupid packaging I have ever dealt with. How am I supposed to use it without it going all down the side of the tin? How do I actually measure it? Pouring it out gets it all in the rim and down the side of the tin, using a spoon leaves more on the spoon than in the bowl and again it drizzles and drips all over the tin and on the kitchen worktop. When you’re finally done you need a bloody hammer to seal it all up again. I also managed to flip the lid off when I was opening it and it stuck to my top so that was fun.

I finally managed to get it closed again and rinsed the whole thing off with hot water so I could put it in the cupboard but now I’m afraid it will go to waste because I’m not facing this disaster again. Any tips?

A spoon dipped in flour helps the syrup roll off. I find tins very annoying, so have given in and got the squeezy bottle.

Go back in time and buy the syrup in the squeeze bottle. Grin

MichelleScarn · 05/11/2021 20:17

There's a nack to taking it out with a spoon- you need to perfect a twisty, twizzly movement!

StormyCornishSeas · 05/11/2021 20:17

Warm in the oven for a few minutes before using.

Tiddlypompadour · 05/11/2021 20:18

Lightly oil the spoon.

Mybalconyiscracking · 05/11/2021 20:18

The tin is iconic innit?

LadyTiredWinterBottom2 · 05/11/2021 20:18

I put a little spray oil on the spoon before dipping it in the tin so it slides off.

Clocktopus · 05/11/2021 20:19

Put your spoon in a cup of hot water for a few minutes first so the metal heats up, stops the drips and the syrup slides straight off. For putting the lid back you lay it over the hole and then press all around the edges until it clicks.

LegArmpits · 05/11/2021 20:19

Run the spoon under hot water for a few seconds first.

DrWankincense · 05/11/2021 20:19

A spoon turned round and round til it stops dripping, then some fast wrist action.
I adore the tins of golden syrup, reminds me of baking with my Granny.
And getting to lick the spoon.
Also tins of treacle Smile. Lovely.

FelicityBeedle · 05/11/2021 20:19

Warm the spoon and master the twizzle!

Scarby9 · 05/11/2021 20:19

Golden syrup tins remind me of making flapjack, and of Pancake Tuesday.
Both very sticky memories!
There is a knack to dipping in the syrup and twisting the spoon to stop the drips. My mum had the knack, but none of the rest of us.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 05/11/2021 20:19

I love syrup tins. Ultimately reusable and recyclable. I grew up with syrup in tins though, I guess I know how to handle it.

LaMariposa · 05/11/2021 20:19

Twiddle the spoon to prevent drips, and then give the spoon to a small child to lick after you’ve used it. No waste!

Luckydog7 · 05/11/2021 20:20

It is iconic but have you actually looked at it? The image is of a rotting lion corpse! i'm not kidding. It doesn't just look like it, that it was it is trying to depict, flies and everything! (thanks dave gorman)

MrsTulipTattsyrup · 05/11/2021 20:21

Wipe your spoon with a spot of veg oil poured onto some kitchen roll before you approach the tin, and it will slide off cleanly.

Use the end of a teaspoon to prise the lid off. Press evenly around the top with the fingers of both hands, and it will pop back on.

Neither of these will stop the tin becoming inexplicably and impossibly sticky, though. But half the fun is in prising it off the shelf when you need it.

purplesequins · 05/11/2021 20:21

tins are great if you need the whole anount of syrup (treacle tart or similar) if you need less a syringe like they come with children's medicine is good.

tbh the bottles are not much better and they stick to the cupboard quite impressively.

Pumpkinsonparade · 05/11/2021 20:21

Our tin lives on a plate in the pantry.

FOJN · 05/11/2021 20:22

Rotate the tin as you tilt it upright after you've poured, there will still be some in the rim but you can wipe that off with kitchen towel dampened wth hot water. I realised why it now comes in a more expensive squeezy bottle after I made the same mistake, never again.

'When you’re finally done you need a bloody hammer to seal it all up again. I also managed to flip the lid off when I was opening it and it stuck to my top so that was fun.'
Is it too soon to laugh at this bit??

DobbyTheHouseElk · 05/11/2021 20:24

Tastes better out of the tin. Warm the spoon and twist your spoon.

Licking the spoon afterwards is compulsory.

Oh wow it is rather gory! I’m guessing it’s bees not flies though, from the bible story with the riddle where the answer is about honey from a beehive found in a lion’s corpse? Can’t remember the exact details but it’s something about getting something sweet from something dangerous maybe?

I agree that there’s a knack to dealing with a syrup tin, flour on the spoon and a twisting wrist action are what you need.

Pancakes with golden syrup are one of life’s cheapest delights, or try it drizzled on porridge, or over ice-cream, or stirred into hot lemon when you’ve got a cold, or hot milk on a chilly night.

Seeline · 05/11/2021 20:28

Hot spoon.

To put the lid back on, place it over the hole and then use either a flat knife or something with a long straight handle. Lay it across the top and apply pressure at either end. Stops it flipping.

Yup! Samson and the lion: “out of the strong came forth sweetness”
