Golden syrup tins WTF

Helloise · 05/11/2021 20:14

Needed some golden syrup for a recipe (not something I’d usually buy and I didn’t grow up with it) and I got the tin instead of the plastic bottle because it was cuter and recyclable/reusable. What in the actual fuck? This is the most stupid packaging I have ever dealt with. How am I supposed to use it without it going all down the side of the tin? How do I actually measure it? Pouring it out gets it all in the rim and down the side of the tin, using a spoon leaves more on the spoon than in the bowl and again it drizzles and drips all over the tin and on the kitchen worktop. When you’re finally done you need a bloody hammer to seal it all up again. I also managed to flip the lid off when I was opening it and it stuck to my top so that was fun.

I finally managed to get it closed again and rinsed the whole thing off with hot water so I could put it in the cupboard but now I’m afraid it will go to waste because I’m not facing this disaster again. Any tips?

Golden syrup lasts forever .. the tin adds to the charm. It’s a classic

For use heat your metal spoon in a cup on boiling water first.. dip in and the syrup slides off - easy.

MyDogLovesBiscuits · 05/11/2021 22:34

Like an ice cream scoop, jug of boiled water, dip spoon in water to heat, use spoon on GS, be patient while it drizzles off, repeat.

I prefer the tins but you need to give them a wipe or they get boggin' Grin and no matter what you do there will always be a sticky circular mark on your shelves.

The best of stuff!

@Triphazards

For a moment last Xmas I thought I might be about to buy a 5 litre catering size amount to send to Germany as my nephew loves baking and you can't buy it there. It would have cost too much, and more importantly, would have been in a plastic container. I think if they had scaled up the size of the tin, I would have been sorely tempted.

Skysblue · 05/11/2021 22:46

I hear you OP! And by the way the tins can leave rust stains on white worktops too 😬

Dasher789 · 05/11/2021 22:47

@Clocktopus

Put your spoon in a cup of hot water for a few minutes first so the metal heats up, stops the drips and the syrup slides straight off. For putting the lid back you lay it over the hole and then press all around the edges until it clicks.
This! Just boil the kettle and pop a spoon in the water for 15 seconds. The syrup will slide off! You need to twist the spoon in the syrup like its spaghetti to get it out. Yum!
reesewithoutaspoon · 05/11/2021 22:53

wait till you have to get the lid off the next time you want to use it. You think you got problems putting it on You aint seen nothing yet.

blackwingedstilt · 05/11/2021 22:55

I've always found the tins much better value weight for weight.

soberfabulous · 05/11/2021 22:56

You're not wrong OP.

I moved to honey for this reason.

ponkydonkey · 05/11/2021 22:57

I've had a tin of it in my cupboard for 8 years 😬 still lovely

It's all about oiling the spoon first 😀😀

NiceGerbil · 05/11/2021 23:19

Iirc from being a kid any spillage is mopped up with fingers / tongue.

Yes it is messy!

We were allowed to eat with teaspoons when mum was baking Grin

FlibbertyGibbitt · 05/11/2021 23:20

It’s always been like this and will stick to your cupboard 🤷‍♀️

tomorrowalready · 05/11/2021 23:23

I think we had the same tin in our larder throughout my childhood and even though I have a sweet tooth it was the one thing I never attempted to sneak a sponful of. Has anyone mentioned the twiddly things or spindle, usually wooden, you can get for the purpose? One tin of golden syrup = a lifetime investment, should be their slogan.

JocastaElastic · 05/11/2021 23:27

My tip: All your anxiety regarding Golden Syrup can be immediately resolved by accepting that Golden Syrup in a can behaves just like Golden Syrup in a can, and that's not something anyone should ever get upset about.

Did you know the Tate & Lyle factory is still in East London?

Kernowfornia · 06/11/2021 00:11

Theres a glorious 1990’s advert for golden syrup - stick it - on you tube. Nothing like a singing spoon to brighten your day.

Twofurrycats · 06/11/2021 00:27

@2catsandhappy I had syrup tin stilts. Loved clonking up and down the yard in them

Poppins2016 · 06/11/2021 00:36

My method is dip, twiddle, dollop and then scrape the spoon with a silicone spatula.

FictionalCharacter · 06/11/2021 01:08

@IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads

I love syrup tins. Ultimately reusable and recyclable. I grew up with syrup in tins though, I guess I know how to handle it.
Same! I had good spoon and lid technique from an early age!
noodlezoodle · 06/11/2021 01:22

This is not what you asked OP, but YABVVVVVU to have given me a major craving for a golden syrup sponge pudding with gallons of custard

mawbroon · 06/11/2021 01:24

I made my own golden syrup during lockdown. Mostly out of curiosity to see if it would work (it did!)
I put it in a storage jar so no issues with a tin!

Warm the spoon. Stick it in the gas flame*

Ah, the sizzle of the syrup as the hot spoon hits. the surface. The caramelised sugar smell and the viscous slip as the syrup slides off into a pan holding foaming butter. Takes me right back.

  • or mug of hot water if you’ve induction
ThinWomansBrain · 06/11/2021 05:58

I remember those!
Not something I use, but have recently started using 'real' honey - similar viscosity. No help on opening the tin, but with the honey, heating the spoon by holding by in hot water for a few seconds helps enormously.

NeverForgetYourDreams · 06/11/2021 06:26

It tastes better from the tin.
