Golden syrup tins WTF

Needed some golden syrup for a recipe (not something I’d usually buy and I didn’t grow up with it) and I got the tin instead of the plastic bottle because it was cuter and recyclable/reusable. What in the actual fuck? This is the most stupid packaging I have ever dealt with. How am I supposed to use it without it going all down the side of the tin? How do I actually measure it? Pouring it out gets it all in the rim and down the side of the tin, using a spoon leaves more on the spoon than in the bowl and again it drizzles and drips all over the tin and on the kitchen worktop. When you’re finally done you need a bloody hammer to seal it all up again. I also managed to flip the lid off when I was opening it and it stuck to my top so that was fun.

I finally managed to get it closed again and rinsed the whole thing off with hot water so I could put it in the cupboard but now I’m afraid it will go to waste because I’m not facing this disaster again. Any tips?

I'm sorry OP, I couldn't help laughing at na imagine of the tin lid sticking to someone's top 🤣 My Gran and Mum both used the tins and had the knack, I don't though

InTheLabyrinth · 05/11/2021 20:31

@DobbyTheHouseElk

Tastes better out of the tin. Warm the spoon and twist your spoon.

Licking the spoon afterwards is compulsory.

Couldn't put it better myself.
Reusablebags · 05/11/2021 20:32

@luckydog7 it’s a biblical reference - Samson and the riddle of the lion and the bees.

VioletVesper · 05/11/2021 20:32

@Luckydog7

It is iconic but have you actually looked at it? The image is of a rotting lion corpse! i'm not kidding. It doesn't just look like it, that it was it is trying to depict, flies and everything! (thanks dave gorman)
How have I never noticed this?! I just read the explanation for the dead lion being feasted on by bees logo Confused
GuyFawkesDay · 05/11/2021 20:34

I love the tins. You just need the knack!

They're a design classic.

And you can make them into cute planters afterwards too if you don't recycle.

The tins were much better, the squashy bottles are like getting any OGX shampoo out.

My dad used to leave his half covered syrup knife hanging out the run and over the worktop Angry

AdaColeman · 05/11/2021 20:34

“Out of strength came forth sweetness” if my memory is still working. I used to love that quote when I was a little girl and a compulsive reader!

Oh and YY to treacle tart, another economical treat made with golden syrup.

H1Drangea · 05/11/2021 20:34

Warm or oil the spoon to make the syrup slide off
The lion in the picture is to show that
From the strong , brings forth sweetness
Or some similar quote
I love the tins 👍 they’re so cute and vintage

godmum56 · 05/11/2021 20:35

best tip? bin the tin and buy a squeezy bottle :)

Svalberg · 05/11/2021 20:36

If you've got a gas hob, hold a metal spoon in oven gloves, heat the spoon in the flame then when it's really hot, dip it in the syrup & add to the recipe ingredients. Makes a great sizzle when dipped in...

I'm kinda loving that you feel strongly enough about this topic to start a thread 😆

Digital scales.

Cup of boiling water, put your spoon in for a minute, take it out of the water and let it dry for 10 seconds, use the spoon to for the golden syrup - the syrup slides off really quickly. Repeat as needed. Lick and mess, smile.

GypsyWanderer · 05/11/2021 20:39

You think that’s bad, what about treacle? I use it a lot during the Christmas season and i complain every time! Sticky and hard to get out of the tin as golden syrup but black! So everything ends up covered in the dark sticky goo. And it doesn’t even taste nice by itself so can’t lick it off everything like golden syrup Grin

It's Biblical - Samson's riddle. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samson%27s_riddle They're bees not flies.
TaraR2020 · 05/11/2021 20:40

Just warm the tin in a pan of hot water for a couple of minutes.

Measure the syrup using spoons, don't pour it. Wipe afterwards if you wish, I never do.

The golden syrup tin is part of the joy of baking Grin

PaulGallico · 05/11/2021 20:41

Heat the spoon on a gas flame or dip the spoon in boiling water and the syrup does not stick. Don't use the squeezy suff for baking (flapjack, biscuits), keep it for drizzling on your porridge. You need golden syrup from a tin.

I did a little shriek of frustration at one point and scared the cat.

I heat the spoon over one of the rings of the hob. Changing to an electric hob soon so I'll have to stop getting golden syrup 😂

caketiger · 05/11/2021 20:42

Hot spoon :-) then porridge with Syrup...

That was my thought. Grin

I remember growing up that the Golden Syrup tin was always stuck to the shelf in the pantry with syrup and getting the lid off was like opening a can of old paint.

2catsandhappy · 05/11/2021 20:44

Now you need another tin so you can make a pair of 'stilts' when they are empty.

Genderwitched · 05/11/2021 20:44

It's worth it for the lovely tin Smile

maddiemookins16mum · 05/11/2021 20:45

That’s part of the joy of a tin of syrup really.

It’s from judges 14 when Samson is attacked by a lion, he kills it with his bare hands - he later finds a hive of bees inside the carcass and collects the honey… “out of the strong came forth sweetness”
JetRocket · 05/11/2021 20:46

Spoon needs to be hot. Heat it up and then scoop it out at your ease Grin I think you have to grow up with it to know that though xx
