Golden syrup tins WTF

182 replies

Helloise · 05/11/2021 20:14

Needed some golden syrup for a recipe (not something I’d usually buy and I didn’t grow up with it) and I got the tin instead of the plastic bottle because it was cuter and recyclable/reusable. What in the actual fuck? This is the most stupid packaging I have ever dealt with. How am I supposed to use it without it going all down the side of the tin? How do I actually measure it? Pouring it out gets it all in the rim and down the side of the tin, using a spoon leaves more on the spoon than in the bowl and again it drizzles and drips all over the tin and on the kitchen worktop. When you’re finally done you need a bloody hammer to seal it all up again. I also managed to flip the lid off when I was opening it and it stuck to my top so that was fun.

I finally managed to get it closed again and rinsed the whole thing off with hot water so I could put it in the cupboard but now I’m afraid it will go to waste because I’m not facing this disaster again. Any tips?

Sorry PP already got there, cancel the cheque

DoctorSnortles · 05/11/2021 20:47

@Clocktopus

Put your spoon in a cup of hot water for a few minutes first so the metal heats up, stops the drips and the syrup slides straight off. For putting the lid back you lay it over the hole and then press all around the edges until it clicks.
This.

Warm the spoon … simple

@GypsyWanderer

You think that’s bad, what about treacle? I use it a lot during the Christmas season and i complain every time! Sticky and hard to get out of the tin as golden syrup but black! So everything ends up covered in the dark sticky goo. And it doesn’t even taste nice by itself so can’t lick it off everything like golden syrup Grin
I just found out recently that treacle = molasses, which is a key ingredient in one of my gran’s Christmas cookie recipes. So I will probably be dealing with treacle soon enough. Will definitely be trying some of the tips here. The molasses I grew up with came in glass jars. You just pour it and neatly run the spoon around the rim of the jar, easy as.

It's meant to get all sticky and leave a sticky ring in the cupboard. It's all part of the experience.

SpookyScarySkeletons · 05/11/2021 20:50

Dip your spoon in boiling water before each scoop

GrrrlPwr · 05/11/2021 20:51

Tastes better out of the tin. Just not the same in the plastic bottle. Hugely easier to deal with though. Tricky one

rrhuth · 05/11/2021 20:51

@MichelleScarn

There's a nack to taking it out with a spoon- you need to perfect a twisty, twizzly movement!
Yes this, I don't have any problems but was trained as a child.

For anyone who prefers weighing to measuring by volume misses point

1 tbsp (15ml) golden syrup is approx. 21g

It is iconic but have you actually looked at it? The image is of a rotting lion corpse! i'm not kidding. It doesn't just look like it, that it was it is trying to depict, flies and everything! (thanks dave gorman)
Yes, it's from the Biblical quote 'Out of the strong came forth sweetness.' The design hasn't changed for 150+ years.

The thing about golden syrup and treacle is that you don't need to measure accurately, OP. A bit more or a bit less doesn't matter.

My mum used to make the most wonderful steamed golden syrup sponge pudding once a month throughout my childhood. Makes me feel a bit weepy, just thinking about its unctuous stickiness.

ancientgran · 05/11/2021 20:53

I thought loads left on the spoon was so I'd have an excuse to lick it off before it goes in the washing up bowl.

musicviking1 · 05/11/2021 20:54

I twist it around, but usually I just buy the squeeze version.

EdenFlower · 05/11/2021 20:54

Heat the spoon in the flames on the gas hob if you have one before using. Next time buy the plastic bottle.

WorkBitch · 05/11/2021 20:55

OP, I’ve had a crap night -child come home from school with head lice, so I’ve had to miss fireworks, collect & start a mountain sized pile of washing & 3 people’s head to treat & comb (including asd toddler) so we’ve missed the fireworks asd toddler was looking forward to.

Your op made me laugh & also took me back to memories of baking with my nana.

Thank you

BoredZelda · 05/11/2021 20:56

“Out of strength came forth sweetness” if my memory is still working. I used to love that quote when I was a little girl and a compulsive reader!

Me too!

I'm kinda loving that you feel strongly enough about this topic to start a thread

Yes, this is what the internet should be about!

Although loving all the “you’re doing it wrong” posts 😆

I've baked with it for years and never noticed....it's vile lol.
HappyDays101010 · 05/11/2021 20:57

I thought this was going to be about the pic of an exploding corpse on the tin.

brizzlewizzle · 05/11/2021 20:58

@LegArmpits

Run the spoon under hot water for a few seconds first.
This!
DilemmaDelilah · 05/11/2021 20:58

I agree that the squeezy bottles are easier than the tins.... But the syrup from the tins is sooooo much nicer. That sweet tinny taste - there's nothing like it!

JudgeJ · 05/11/2021 20:59

@Scarby9

Golden syrup tins remind me of making flapjack, and of Pancake Tuesday. Both very sticky memories! There is a knack to dipping in the syrup and twisting the spoon to stop the drips. My mum had the knack, but none of the rest of us.
I've made sticky parkin this week, syrup and treacle, the knack is definitely to warm the spoon and twist it as you get the stuff out. Alternatively stand the tin in warm water and pour what you need, stopping pouring early, it can get a bit down the side but it's easy to wipe off as the tin's warm.
BlackeyedSusan · 05/11/2021 21:00

Warm the tin in a pan of hot water. Syrup is runnier and easier to measure.

They're not flies, they are bees. They have made a beehive inside the carcass, hence the slogan mentioned by a pp above (although what honey has to do with golden syrup I have no idea).

Out of the strong came forth sweetness

ChristmasGrogu · 05/11/2021 21:00

You won’t have got the tin clean and it will leak on your cupboard and your kitchen will be sticky from now on for ever more.

EmbarrassingHadrosaurus · 05/11/2021 21:00

Yes and no. Treacle is sometimes golden syrup; e.g., treacle tart is golden syrup.

Depending on the recipe book, treacle is mostly black treacle (the other tinned sticky stuff). But, even then black treacle isn't necessarily molasses (the stuff in the jar).
