To want to buy a few fireworks?

I can’t find any anywhere! What’s happened? Has Bonfire Night been cancelled? I loved it as a child. I just want to get a few sparklers and Roman candles, some traffic lights and fizz pops. I’m not looking for a significant amount of gunpowder - not trying to frighten people’s pets. I don’t want to attend a public display. They’re too crowded and loud. I just want a little party in my garden with parkin and toffee apples.

Where are all the fireworks??

There is a debate in Parliament on this subject on Monday. If you have time please send off a quick email to your MP asking them to attend and to support a ban.

. I'll take a few pops and bangs over this insufferable racket any day.

That sounds miserable but again the fireworks involve far more than a few pops and bangs or a few seconds/minutes of noise and I wish that people would stop claiming that's all it is.

speakout · 05/11/2021 12:58

Glad to hear it OP.

@Notahandmaid

I mentioned earlier that I help out at a rescue centre with tens of dogs and cats, some of whom are quite chilled out and some of whom are traumatised by the noise of fireworks.

Can those experts saying above that dog owners should desensitise their pets to the noise explain how we manage at the rescue centre for the two weeks around end of October/early November when idiots are letting off fireworks?

And perhaps they could also advise those who own horses and other livestock how to manage their animals for the period before and after the 5th November?

Thank you

If you genuinely can’t see the difference between having a pet in your home, or multiple animals in a shelter then I’m afraid you’re beyond any explanation.

I’ve NEVER had a dog that is scared of fireworks. It’s not luck. With puppies, they had their sound CD from an early age. For older rescues and fosters, they were GENTLY introduced to noises on the CD at almost inaudible levels, gradually increasing the volume over a period of weeks or months, with heavy focus on treats and basic training.

It’s too much effort for a lot of people though, who prefer to just shout about how scared their pets are without actually spending the hours and weeks and months it takes to help their pets because it’s not the easiest option.

I love fireworks.
I still think only sparklers should be sold for private use, and organised fireworks displays should be required to have a licence.

CaptainMyCaptain · 05/11/2021 13:00

@NothingSafe

Good. They shouldn't be sold to the general public anyway.
Agreed.

Completely agree. They should have been removed from general sale years ago.

They've been going off since Halloween here too and some yobs have been posting them through letterboxes.

YellowandGreenToBeSeen · 05/11/2021 13:00

We use a Thunder Coat, play soothing music, have a vet provided anti anxiety plug in for our dog. We ARE responsible dog owners.

Yet still she shakes, pants and paces the house. It’s awful to watch / try and soother her.

Ban fireworks from all but public displays. They should only be used on Bonfire Night and NYE.

100% agree with this.
Tal45 · 05/11/2021 13:02

'Desensitising' is cruel. You're repeatedly exposing an animal to something they're terrified off.

If you're exposing them to something they're terrified of then it is not going to desensitise them. You're completely misunderstanding the process.

lurker69 · 05/11/2021 13:02

i can only assume you live miles from anyone else? as you don't want to go to a display because its crowded and noisy! so im sure you are not going to selfishly inflict your own 'display' on people who chose to stay at home for whatever reason? disturbing their night or upsetting their animals.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 05/11/2021 13:03

Going against the trend, I absolutely love fireworks and used to really enjoy hosting a (large) fireworks display at home (when you could still buy mortars and the 500 shot chinese firecrackers).

I prefer an active involvement in events like that rather than a passive one, but I can see I'm in a significant minority here.
As for our cats - they really don't seem too bothered by the fireworks where I am.
So OP - I don't think YABU at all

HoldingTheDoor · 05/11/2021 13:03

Enough with the patronising twaddle. I've tried that. Still no difference. And yes luck plays a big part too. My last dog didn't even look up when when we were outside and they went off. He just didn't care s I didn't have to get him used to anything. My current dog is completely different and the cds made no difference. What works for one doesn't mean it works for all,

CompensationStreet · 05/11/2021 13:03

Totally agree. They freak animals out and get on my nerves.

Notahandmaid · 05/11/2021 13:03

@Derbee of course I can see the difference - can't you? I was being sarcastic.

There's a big difference between having an animal in your home for years and then animals in your care for a short period - some of whom might have only come in that week or that day. How on earth is the sanctuary supposed to desensitise animals in a short time?

I'm afraid it doesn't sound like you are much of a dog lover.

FourTeaFallOut · 05/11/2021 13:04

There were fireworks yesterday but that was as likely to be a Diwali celebration as people jumping the gun on Bonfire Night? Otherwise it has been quiet for fireworks here.

There were some fireworks still remaining at Tesco but not many.

RampantIvy · 05/11/2021 13:07

Goodness, it's one day of the year. Come on people.

But it isn’t. I live in a rural community, and the local Facebook pages are already full of posts describing frightened livestock. The farmers round here hate bonfire night, as do pet owners.

However, one considerate neighbour has posted on the local Facebook page that he is having a low noise firework display so that pet owners have been warned.

FUCK not duck.... I’m not being polite!

ArrrMeHearties · 05/11/2021 13:08

I'm getting some sparklers and the quiet fireworks that are just a shower of sparkles as I've recently lost my baby son so want to get some as my older son wants to send kisses to his baby brother in heaven

Carpetsareforflying · 05/11/2021 13:10

@GreenTeaBlackCoffeeAndRedWine

Let's stop selling balloons too then
I agree
ADreadedSunnyDay · 05/11/2021 13:13

I would love to ban balloons and fireworks

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 05/11/2021 13:13

@SingYouBackToSleep
Many thanks for your valuable and well thought out argument. I'm absolutely humbled by your obvious existence as a paragon of virtue.

I might point out that it is possible to disagree with someone without resorting to offensive name calling.
