Parking thread! I've NC for this. Partly because I am perhaps the unreasonable party. We'll see shall we!?

So this morning, I look out of the front window to see a car parked outside the house, overhanging our drive enough to make it difficult but not impossible for me to get out of the drive. Diagram attached! Very annoying etc etc, but not the end of the world. Or so I thought.

When I went to actually leave the house, another car had parked on the other side of our drive. This second car had parked legitimately with no overhang. However with both cars parked as they were there was not enough space for me to get off the drive. I had to leave house within the hour.

Here's where I potentially am the unreasonable one. I peeked in the back window of the overhanging car. Lots of vet textbooks all over back seat. Well...we happen to live about 100m from a vets. So, I call them. Very polite, give reg no, ask could could it possibly be a member of their staff. If so, could they possibly move car. Etc.

Very shortly after the phone call, a lady scampers up the road into car and drives off. I then realise that between my call and her arrival, the second car has moved. Meaning that at the time she moved her car, I could have got off my drive. Ok with difficulty, but it would not have been impossible! Unless/until another car came and parked on other side of the drive again, of course.

Anyway, fast forward several hours and I'm walking my baby to sleep around the local park. My phone goes and it is our doorbell camera. She's come knocking on the door. Oh! I thought; an apology! I answered the door from the park (thank God).

It transpires she most certainly was not knocking on the door to apologise but instead to tell me she was NOT blocking me in, I COULD HAVE got off drive, she moved the car around the corner AND NOW HAS BEEN GIVEN A PARKING TICKET FOR BLOCKING ANOTHER DROPPED KERB! Oh, and she is VERY BUSY saving the lives of animals and could I PLEASE bear that in mind in future.

I've not previously used my doorbell camera to have a row in the park with someone I've never met, but there's a first time for everything I suppose.

I mean, I'm an animal lover and all that but I also like to be able to move my car should the need arise. So! WIBU to call her work and get her to move her car? 😁

Ok Smile
Sorry did you have a point? I must've missed it.

If not it might be best to stop goading and derailing

Yes, I think you should Smile

Are you 6? Confused

It must be a slow-troll night

SirChenjins · 01/11/2021 21:57

Yes I’m 6. Absolutely.

AnneElliott · 01/11/2021 21:58

She's a CF and she's in the wrong. And batshit to knock at your door and complain! If uuu hand over someone's drive you risk getting a ticket - it doesn't matter if they can still get off their drive.

cosyto · 01/11/2021 22:02

It's not ok for her to behave like that and intimidate you especially when she was in the wrong.

Basically this above. Forget the parking incident. She's supposed to be a professional. Her behaviour was shocking. This sort of behaviour would not be seen favourably by her professional body had you chosen to report it.
As it is, I'd probably just let it go and put it down to her having a bad day

Briony123 · 01/11/2021 22:02

If she had left her car outside your house she very well may have also received a parking ticket for overhanging a dropped kerb.
I can't believe she returned to complain to you!
Excellent diagram btw.

Duchess379 · 01/11/2021 22:03

So she has previous for shite parking & blames you for her getting a ticket. Bless! 😆🤦🏼‍♀️

Runinwithangryvet · 01/11/2021 22:07

Oooh things have got heated since I last checked in.

Definitely not knocking her profession. I have vets in the family and my friendship circle and have lots of respect for what they do.

Not sure about parking at this particular surgery but it is central-ish in a big city where parking can be scarce. There is plenty of parking on my road though, it was just carelessness on her part.

I wish I was important enough to have come up with a quick retort to her comment about being VERY busy saving animals' lives. Unfortunately I'm just a harried mum on mat leave pacing the park most afternoons to get my child to sleep.

Normally I'm an employment lawyer though. I thought it best not to tell her that Grin

I think what I'll take from all this is not to row over the doorbell camera from the park Blush and I think what she'll take from it is to clear out the back seat of her car so that she isn't so easily identifiable the next time she parks someone in Wink

It's worth a call to the practice manager. It's not ok at all for her to attempt to confront you

Not an excuse but I do wonder if she's a stressed out new grad in her first job.
Not all vet practices have car parks - especially in cities. She maybe overwhelmed, but if so she needs more support, not to expect you to accommodate her poor parking.

It's the books that make me think she's a new grad. An experienced vet wouldn't have left them there. Rookie mistake Wink
HomeCountiesMum · 01/11/2021 22:13

@Djifunrsn

I’m in 2 minds. Obviously there is insufficient parking and that is the cause of the problem, rather than the vet being an idiot. She did what she had to do. It’s unlikely she actually wanted to block you in.

I’d be ok with the vet parking like that if my dog was having an emergency. The animal was presumably quite ill for a house call.

Too many people on this island. We need about 20 million of us to redistribute ourselves over the rest of the world.

Eh? She wasn't on a house call and she wasn't saving a dogs life! She was working in the veterinary surgery 100m away! Where on earth did you get that from?
KosherDill · 01/11/2021 23:21

@walksen

"AND NOW HAS BEEN GIVEN A PARKING TICKET FOR BLOCKING ANOTHER DROPPED KERB!"

So has a habit of parking inconsiderately and has got her just desserts. Perhaps she will take more care in future. Go you!

This.

I would complain to the vet's office and play them the recording.

5329871e · 02/11/2021 09:53

Aw I’m sorry my joke caused offence. It was very much the type of arrogant comment we doctors like to make in order to feel superior to vets, who have better salary and work life balance. No judgement on other healthcare professionals whatsoever.

lanthanum · 02/11/2021 10:17

If she was given a ticket for blocking a dropped kerb round the corner, presumably the same traffic warden might have ticketed her if she'd still been blocking your dropped kerb.

Vets have a better salary and work life balance than doctors? You might want to fact check your assumptions @5329871e

The most recent survey suggests new graduate veterinary salaries have dropped 3.7% and a vet qualified 11 to 15 years can hope to earn an average £48k compared to a doctor earning up to £83k and dentists £110k.

You know humour only works when you punch up right? Punching down isn't funny.

Veterinari · 02/11/2021 11:40

@5329871e

across all respondents the median value of the salary package was £46,400 for small animal/exotic vets, in equine practice it was £42,206, in mixed practice it was £40,333
That's a salary survey of over 1500 qualified vets https://www.vettimes.co.uk/news/spvs-2020-salary-survey-released/

Within 3 years the doctor salary banding exceeds the average vet salary, including vets qualified over 10 years.
If you’re a doctor starting your specialist training in 2021 your basic salary will be £39,467 to £53,077

If you’re working as a specialty doctor you’ll earn a basic salary of £45,124 to £77,519.

As a consultant from 1 April 2021, you'll earn a basic salary of £84,559 to £114,003 per year

Our caseloads are higher than vets across Europe or the USA
And we have significantly increased suicide and mental health risks compared to other professions.

But sure, we aren't 'real' doctors so crack on mocking those of us who are working hard for less reward.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 02/11/2021 11:53

Doesn’t matter how terribly important she is. She can’t overhang your drive and shouldn’t have parked overhanging the other drive.

She could have moved into the other spot that was vacated.

nordicnorth · 02/11/2021 13:19

Oh dear @5329871e I think you've hit a nerve 🤣

nomoneytreehere · 02/11/2021 14:32

Op she was a cheeky fucker but seriously all of the people saying go and report her to her employer wtf. Why would you do that? You had a row with someone and now she's gone away with her parking ticket. Did you know vets have one of the highest rate of professional suicide and they are 4x the national average to take their own lives.

I'm not a vet by the way!

Runinwithangryvet · 02/11/2021 16:07

@nomoneytreehere I'm definitely not going to report her to her workplace. Happy to put it down to a bad day - she riled me by claiming so confidently that I could have got off my drive and that I should essentially have put up with it because she was too busy to be dealing with the likes of me. But today I am zen Grin

Treegarden · 02/11/2021 16:12

Her behaviour is really unreasonable. I would call her work and tell them that she's come back to your property and shouted at you after you have contacted them and had you been home would have felt very threatened.

Really unprofessional of her.

Snazzysausage · 02/11/2021 16:32

She's clearly a CF of the highest order and hopefully the ticket will be a reality check for her. Why does her need to park( illegally) trump your need to exit your drive!? And that diagram is a thing of beauty!

Arkestra · 02/11/2021 16:37

@Runinwithangryvet I think you've got exactly the right attitude. She was hopefully just having a really bad day and venting.

I guess my attitude would be that either this is totally out of character for her (in which case cut her some slack, we've all acted like idiots on occasion when under stress - or, at least, I certainly have), or she makes a habit of being an arse to random members of the public (in which case she is going to get her come-uppance sooner rather than later).
