To ask if we can stop dicking about with the clocks?

Just that, really. I'm up at 4:30 for the second day in a row because of this clock nonsense. Changing bedtime is not adjusting wake-up time, just resulting in a tired infant. Can we all just leave the clocks where they are from now on?

If a child wakes at say 5am every morning won't they still wake at '5am' even if it's technically 4am so as long as everyone went to bed the same time and didn't do anything different why are loads of toddlers grumpy this morning? Confused

Babdoc · 01/11/2021 08:14

Noducksgiven, but at present they have to walk home in the dark instead, with a higher accident rate than during dark mornings (proven by the trial of staying on BST for three years).
I’m in Scotland, and would much prefer daylight at 5pm rather than at 7am.

stairgates · 01/11/2021 08:15

I love the clocks changing. This morning I have an extra hour in bed and I am desperate for it! And in the summer when I am waking up at silly o'clock it makes it a more normal hour and gives us a lovely long evening to sit out in. I hope they dont change it.

ButterflyAway · 01/11/2021 08:16

Well it wasn’t getting light here til almost half 8 in the morning. It’s now light at half 7 in the morning so YABU. Some of us need to know it’s day time when we leave the hoise

ButterflyAway · 01/11/2021 08:17

@VladmirsPoutine seems to be an outbreak of toddlers suffering from an hours jet lag this morning Hmm

dottiedodah · 01/11/2021 08:20

Nadir vulvokov if you go online and put make and model of your oven you should be able to see their instructions for the oven there

BigPlanes · 01/11/2021 08:20

No thanks!! I’m in Scotland and we will very soon have very little daylight so having an extra hour in the morning makes all the difference. Feel much better when walking my child to school in the morning. In the winter the kids are pretty much in the classroom before it gets light.

Flip side is in summer it’s lighter until much later here Smile

SummerSazz · 01/11/2021 08:22

@gannett

Stick with BST I say.

I'd much rather have daylight at 4.30pm than 6.45am.

The sun setting mid-afternoon is just depressing and constricts what you can do in the day. No outdoor activities when it's not even the evening yet is ridiculous.

No one needs it to be light before 7am. Winter mornings are cold and miserable anyway, they may as well be dark too.

I need it lighter in the morning to walk the dog before work!
dottiedodah · 01/11/2021 08:23

I would love not to keep this up.apparently though this is the correct time ,so by changing to bst all year we would not be correct is that right .feeling tired!

Moaningturtle · 01/11/2021 08:23

It’s not just dark roads, it’s icy too. Much more chance of black ice at 7am than 5pm throughout the whole winter. A dark late afternoon/evening commute is safer than a dark morning commute in wintery conditions.

OverTheRubicon · 01/11/2021 08:23

Yanbu. It means that children can"t play after school and that walking home after work becomes even more dangerous, especially for women.

EatYourVegetables · 01/11/2021 08:25

@UsedUpUsername We get an hour LESS of light in the evening.

I think everyone agrees it’s pointless these days. The EU is trying to arrange stopping it and I read that the only reason they haven’t already done it is that we couldn’t all agree in which time to pick 😂 Eg Ireland and Britain want the same time, Scandinavian countries want light in the morning, the Mediterranean countries want sunny evenings etc.

There’s only so much light to go around and dicking about with the clicks when they days are this short is just robbing Peter to pay Paul.

Pasithea · 01/11/2021 08:25

I love it. The changing of the seasons , makin use of daylight. I lived in Scotland and went to school in the dark and came home in the dark in winter.

Itsnotgreatlike · 01/11/2021 08:25

I think the most surprising thing I have taken from this discussion is the fact that some secondary school children don't travel to school alone. Mine would have cried with embarrassment at that age if I had wanted to accompany her.

What about Children and Women walking to school and work does that not matter?
User3579 · 01/11/2021 08:26

I’d definitely prefer BST all year; I have never understood why we are and hour behind Europe when we are at the same latitude and longtitude. Would rather have more light in the evenings. I suppose it depends if you’re a lark or an owl? I quite liked the idea of +2 in the summer and +1 in the winter as it would stop the sun being up at 0430 which I really hate!

ColinTheKoala · 01/11/2021 08:27

Women don't usually get attacked in the mornings, predators like their lie-ins. Seriously, it's far more likely to happen at night.

TrashyPanda · 01/11/2021 08:27

Another vote for staying on GMT and doing away with BST altogether.

That's very true the weather is often worse around dawn than it is at dusk.
ManifestingWisdom · 01/11/2021 08:28

Agree. I hate it. Even if daybreak isnt til 0930 at the latest in someparts, its less depressing than it being dark at 4 o clovck

Tanith · 01/11/2021 08:29

@Mummyoflittledragon

I used to plan for this with dd in 5 min increments over 2/3 weeks so by the time the clocks changed she was pretty much ready for the new time. I know not everyone can do that due to work.
Yeah, I tried that one year and went the wrong way. Ended up two hours early Sad
BiscoffAddict · 01/11/2021 08:30

@risefromyourgrave

I’m sure they had a trial where they didn’t change them one year. My mum has said about it, she said it was horrible.
My DM remembers this as well and said that schoolchildren were going to school in the dark. I’m assuming it was in the 1970’s, but that’s half a century ago and times have changed. We have better technology and most children are driven to school anyway now.
PurpleTint · 01/11/2021 08:30

You know it's not just the UK that does this?

Europe, the US do it too - it is not just a silly UK foible.

Go to bed earlier in anticipation, remind yourself that the hours are different but the time asleep is the same.

Yepnothatfeeling · 01/11/2021 08:33

Am in Scotland - central belt - and last week before the clocks changed my children were leaving the house to go to school in the dark. I don't like the darker evenings but I prefer this option of lighter mornings to perhaps 2 months of walking to school in the dark.

gofg · 01/11/2021 08:33

We have this discussion every year yawn !!

Tedious isn't it. I'm not in the UK, but I'm happy with the time changing twice a year - and yes, we have the moaners here too !!
