Retired DH doing weekly LFT for no reason …..

GoodnightGrandma · 30/10/2021 10:53

…….. other than he wants to. No symptoms, no requirement to do it.

YANBU - It’s a waste of resources and it’s adding to landfill unnecessarily.

YABU - none of your business, he can do what he wants.

I'm all for protecting the environment if he needs that reassurance to get through this time then leave him be.

Aqua55 · 30/10/2021 10:55

He sounds responsible and sensible

dementedpixie · 30/10/2021 10:55

I thought it was advised to do them twice a week (although it's only really ds that uses them in our house)

Artie30 · 30/10/2021 10:56

We live in an area with a high amount of cases. Local media has said that everyone regardless of their situation should go 2 times weekly lft's to minimise the spread.

Dp has to do them now for work. I'm a SAHM so don't really 'need' to do them ... I never used to do them but I do now especially when I try and visit my grandma regularly!

I think it's a good thing. We can all do our bit!

ImUninsultable · 30/10/2021 10:56

What do you mean by no requirement to do it?

I'm in Scotland, maybe it is different where you are, but we're being asked for every adult to do 2 a week. It's on radio adverts all the time.

Do 2 tests a week and report results.

The only way for any normalcy to return is for everyone to test every week and then isolate if they get a positive. With the vaccine, a lot of people have no symptoms so you dont know you've got it but you'd be spreading it around. Even just going to the shops or out for lunch. You might spread it to a child or to the vulnerable.

You should be testing too.

NailsNeedDoing · 30/10/2021 10:56

The point of them is to do them with no symptoms. Your DH is doing nothing wrong.

I agree we should be concerned about the extra waste that this pandemic has generated though.

Sunshinealligator · 30/10/2021 10:57

YABU
I assume he's having contact with the outside world, friends, family, healthcare professionals, shop workers, staff in restaurants and cafes?

I think its everyone's responsibility to try and keep the risks as low for everyone around them as possible.

I have a friend who is 42, has just been hospitalised with covid/pneumonia after catching covid from her mother, who is retired and doesn't see anyone but her children. No ones sure where she got it from but she's been careful and didn't see the point in testing with no symptoms.

stalkersaga · 30/10/2021 10:58

Of all the things to be pissed off with one's retired DH over, this one really doesn't register. Things have got pretty bad between you if you're focusing on this.

bordersmidgebites · 30/10/2021 10:59

Balance the extra waste by the additional resources that would be needed to care for a very sick person , the additional resources needed to look after the long covid survivors .., I suspect the environmental cost of the tests is low compared to the costs of even less well controlled covid

ImUninsultable · 30/10/2021 10:59

I'm guessing the OP won't come back as this is not going the way they want.

InTheMiddle23 · 30/10/2021 10:59

Does he almost seem disappointed that he doesn't have it?

arethereanyleftatall · 30/10/2021 11:00

I think it depends on whether he will change how he goes about his day if he gets a positive. Ie is he doing it so that to protect other people?

GoodnightGrandma · 30/10/2021 11:01

I’m still here ! And I don’t ‘want’ it to go any way in particular. Just curious to people’s thoughts. You have a nice day 💐

Does he ever come into contact with other people? If so, then this is exactly what LFTs are for - asymptomatic testing to find cases before the infected person spreads it around.

If anything, he is in an ideal position to do them as there's no lost income if he does test positive.

nomoneytreehere · 30/10/2021 11:01

Your husband is sensible and protecting his and others health.

userxx · 30/10/2021 11:03

Why is he constantly testing without symptoms? What a waste.

stalkersaga · 30/10/2021 11:04

Er, we're all technically advised/supposed to. Regular asymptomatic testing is literally what Lfts are for.
SlugRose · 30/10/2021 11:06

Is he going out at all?

I mean the government said to do them twice a week so really he's not doing enough!

PanicStationsAhh · 30/10/2021 11:06

I don't think it's necessary but it doesn't do any harm. There is a lot of waste being produced by the pandemic though, but I guess he'll be more than balanced out by our family as we're not testing at all.

Are you not doing regular LFTs?! No wonder it's spreading.
Whichjab · 30/10/2021 11:08

No man is an island.

SpinachIsAGatewayDrug · 30/10/2021 11:10

We do weekly LFTs here - the very purpose of them is to regularly test people who don't have symptoms to try and catch the asymptotic infected.

There's no arguing with stupid.
VienneseWhirligig · 30/10/2021 11:12

The government is encouraging regular testing. Its a good thing, I wouldn't find it wasteful or unnecessary at all. Good for him.
