Retired DH doing weekly LFT for no reason …..

…….. other than he wants to. No symptoms, no requirement to do it.

YANBU - It’s a waste of resources and it’s adding to landfill unnecessarily.

YABU - none of your business, he can do what he wants.

@userxx

Why is he constantly testing without symptoms? What a waste.
Why do you say that?

Lateral flow tests are intended to pick up asymptomatic cases so that those people will isolate and not unknowingly spread Covid until their covid status is confirmed, or not, by a PCR test. That is why everyone is supposed to do 2 a week.

Are you saying it's a waste because you didn't know that, or because you don't believe they work, or because you don't believe in Covid, or something else?

AlternativePerspective · 30/10/2021 11:14

It’s the responsible thing to do.

Last week I had two hospital appointments, another one this week, another one next week and an appointment for my COVID booster. I have done LFT’s before all of them, not just because I’m going into hospitals but because I’m getting there by public transport.

And I’m unemployed so I suppose that people might argue that I am testing needlessly esp given I have no symptoms.

But God forbid I should take COVID into the cardiology department and contribute to both serious illness on the part of some and potentially further backlog through staff shortages.

Oh and, I’ve had that hideous cold/flu bug twice, mildly the first time, less so the next time, and on both occasions not only did I do LFT’s but I self isolated and did PCR’s as well.

TheQueef · 30/10/2021 11:14

As we can see the guidance is confusing so erring on caution an lft is probably the sensible thing.

userxx · 30/10/2021 11:14

@SlugRose no I'm not. I've done one test when I had symptoms. It's a virus and it's going to spread 🤷‍♂️.

LindaEllen · 30/10/2021 11:14

Everyone should be doing them twice a week. Of course, not many people actually are.. but your DH is doing it exactly right. YABU.

User527294627 · 30/10/2021 11:16

We’re supposed to be taking them regularly. Lots of people are asymptomatic but still spreading it.

LublinToDublin · 30/10/2021 11:18

Regular testing helps identify symptomless cases so helps reduce spread of infection.
I can't see why his actions could be seen as anything other than responsible.

The issue generally is that too few others are doing likewise- especially those who are commuting and at work etc.

CokeZeroAddiction · 30/10/2021 11:21

Presumably he leaves the house? So it’s sensible.

rookiemere · 30/10/2021 11:23

I thought you were meant to do them - in Scotland there's adverts about doing them twice a week to be a good citizen Hmm.
I agree that the plastic waste is ridiculous ( and ironically they're manufactured in China, remind me again where all this started from and now who appears to be profiting from it) but technically your DH is in the right.

BrilloPaddy · 30/10/2021 11:26

The plastic waste is horrific, and no one should be doing one "just because".

The Covid hysteria is still alive and well on here I see.

Yup.

StaplesCorner · 30/10/2021 11:28

I had no idea you were meant to do them regularly! Can someone provide a link to that advice? (not in Scotland)

But I think the OP is getting at something else, not about COVID, that's just a symptom of his mindset am I right OP? My H is retired (early) and since COVID is taking part in all sorts of medical trials - he told me yesterday he's got to go for a blood test for one of them, its a cancer trial and he is perfectly healthy. Yet at the same time he doesn't have any time to do basic tasks in the house. Does that sound like your situation OP? If not, then sorry if I've put 2 and 2 together and made 5!

Scottishskifun · 30/10/2021 11:31

Let him if he wants to.
We get bombarded with adverts in Scotland to do so it's personal choice I'm a "bad citizen" for not doing it!

I will do them out of courtesy if I am due to see someone vulnerable or if a Dr asks otherwise I don't. I have had it and vaccinated after so 95% protected by the studies that's good enough for me!

will await the covid police telling me I'm selfish

I hate this kind of deliberately unpleasant misuse of language. It isn’t ‘hysteria’.
Iamanicepersonreally · 30/10/2021 11:35

I’ve never done one. Maybe I should

If you can live with killing people then go for it..

StaplesCorner · 30/10/2021 11:36

Thank you @dementedpixie - well I never. I dont know anyone who is doing that! It seems hard enough to get people to wear a mask which surely would be a big help all round if one is concerned about COVID being passed around (I do, my preference).

But my question to the OP still stands - is this more than an issue around LFTs?

SlugRose · 30/10/2021 11:38

It's not "hysteria" are you always so rude about people with differing opinions to yourself? The government have asked everyone to test twice a week. So it's just following instructions.
Cheerbear23 · 30/10/2021 11:41

If the govt plan to start charging individuals and businesses for lateral flows gets off the ground, I think this situation will change very rapidly.

Sounds like he's being responsible.

By the way, if you have symptoms you should not be doing LFTs. They are not designed for that.

CaptainHammer · 30/10/2021 11:42

We’re encouraged to regularly take them to catch any un symptomatic cases so yes YABU

HesterShaw1 · 30/10/2021 11:45

@Aqua55

He sounds responsible and sensible
No he doesn't. He sounds wasteful and paranoid
JesterMcFester · 30/10/2021 11:45

Huge billboards here asking everyone to test twice a week.

I didn’t know we were meant to be doing them regularly in England, so I’d be interested to read that too. I have to do them for work, so perhaps that’s why Ive not noticed that. DS has not been asked to do them for school, other than one before they started back. And my other DS was not asked to do one before returning to Uni. No, he does do basic stuff in the house. He wears a mask if he goes to the shops, which is all he does.
