Retired DH doing weekly LFT for no reason …..

…….. other than he wants to. No symptoms, no requirement to do it.

YANBU - It’s a waste of resources and it’s adding to landfill unnecessarily.

YABU - none of your business, he can do what he wants.

@icedcoffees

If you can live with killing people then go for it..

Why do people always say this?

Have you always isolated yourself and your entire family when you've had flu in the past? What about bad colds, chest infections or tonsillitis?

All those conditions can kill someone who is CEV yet it's only a COVID diagnosis that sends everyone into a massive panic.

If I had flu then yes we would isolate.
Practicebeingpatient · 30/10/2021 12:15

@Iggly

I think that the LFTs have been issued to all and sundry to just get them used up. I think the government ordered loads of them and they were declared pretty useless for confirming cases, so they’ve now said “use them for just in case” testing.

So they need using up - otherwise they’d be landfill anyway.

They will be landfill whether we use them or not!
Thingstodotoday · 30/10/2021 12:16

“The plastic waste is horrific, and no one should be doing one "just because".

The Covid hysteria is still alive and well on here I see.”
More like the low IQs and lack of logic being alive and well.

RedskyThisNight · 30/10/2021 12:17

I think it's very unusual that your DS hasn't been asked to do one by school. DC's school send out a constant barrage of mails "reminding" students that they should be taking LFTs twice a week, and encouraging other family members to do likewise.

As per other posts - LFTs are offered in lots of places in England, and everyone (unless they never leave their house or come into contact with anyone, I guess) is encouraged to take them regularly.

icedcoffees · 30/10/2021 12:18

If I had flu then yes we would isolate.

But not with any of the other conditions that could kill someone that's CEV Hmm

What makes flu and COVID worth isolating for in your mind?

CallMeNutribullet · 30/10/2021 12:22

I don't know what the advice is elsewhere but in Scotland it's for everyone to do 2 per week

DoesHePlayTheFiddle · 30/10/2021 12:22

My local authority says we should all be doing LFT twice a week, no symptoms. I manage it once a week. Today they asked more details, 'Have you ever had Covid?', 'Have you felt supported by your GP?' They haven't done that before.

Mrsjayy · 30/10/2021 12:25

So it's nationwide the twice a week advice so why are some people mystified that this is common place ?

KingsleyShacklebolt · 30/10/2021 12:29

Never do them, neither do the kids.

PearlclutchersInc · 30/10/2021 12:33

I'munsuitable are we? I hadnt noticed (but then I hardly go anywhere)

wanders off to find today's rules

thegameisafoot · 30/10/2021 12:36

You should do them twice a week, unless you and your entire household never ever leave the house and have zero contact with the outside world.

Whether or not he's working is irrelevant. Is he going out? Are you? Even if he's staying indoors but you're going out to work, he should be doing them.

Nothing wrong with that man. Carry on.

Why do people say this? Because they are arses.

I'd guarantee that if you zoomed back 2 years and asked someone what "CEV" stood for, they either wouldn't know, or think it had something to do with electric vehicles. We were not being asked to isolate the whole house when someone had chicken pox, or test for chicken pox even if you didn;t have symptoms, and the same for any number of other medical issues which could potentially be very serious for someone with underlying health conditions.

But it's the judgey, passive aggressive "well I am a decent person and you lot are reckless fools" tone which gets people's goats. Same sort of people who say that wearing masks is "no big deal", make ridiculous predictions about however many cases/deaths a day, think that celebrations over Zoom are marvellous and use terms like "ripping", "carnage" and "plague island".

I suspect because a lot of people have zoned out of listening to Coronavirus news.
toomuchlaundry · 30/10/2021 12:46

Parents of school children have been recommended to be doing tests for months now. Then it moved on to everyone should be testing regularly.

whynotwhatknot · 30/10/2021 12:47

people still arnt getting it are

lft are for symptomless people not once you get a cold cough etc-nothingwrong with him testing himself hes being responsible

BashfulClam · 30/10/2021 12:49

In Scotland we are urged to test twice a week even if symptomless.

HolidaysAreComingBack · 30/10/2021 12:51

Unless you are not going to shops/pubs/restaurants/having friends and family round then of course it’s sensible to do one!
The more people that find out they have it and stop the spread means the schools stay open. Testing is good.

user1487194234 · 30/10/2021 12:53

No way would I do them but if makes him feel better why not

Scarlettpixie · 30/10/2021 12:56

I must have missed the advice for everyone to do them too. I have just ordered a box. We are now being asked to test before going into work but we go in on such low numbers you only see one or two people and then keep your distance so I haven’t worried about it so far tbh.

Seems your DH is following current advice and of course doesn’t need symptoms to do a LFT. If he had symptoms the advice is to take a PCR test!

Hillary17 · 30/10/2021 13:05

Sounds like he’s doing whatever everyone should be!

chaosrabbitland · 30/10/2021 13:06

personally i think its madness , no offence to your husband op , i work in a large beauty store with a pharmacy and only the other day this stupid woman came up and was wittering away she wanted one , and then promptly said i dont need it really , iv got no symtoms i just like to be sure , fucks sake . i would only do a bloody test if i had any symtoms of covid , is this really how nuts its all got ? more than half the uk doing lateral flow test for a virus they have no symtoms of , just in case .
and judging by the comments lots of those hysterical people are on here . iv never tested , neither has my 13 year old and we will do it when we have some symtoms of it and only then

icedcoffees · 30/10/2021 13:11

I don't think people are mystified, they just think it's hugely damaging to the environment and a total waste of time and resources to test for an illness that isn't impacting you in any way whatsoever.

There are no other respiratory conditions that we treat like this - I think a lot of people just don't understand why COVID provokes such hysteria when it actually has a very low fatality rate and most people have nothing more than mild cold-type symptoms with it.

I am with the OP on the waste.

Also - with Delta is it still the case that 1/3 don't have any symptoms at all? Or is that an outdated stat like the symptoms you can have a PCR test for are

MrsJBaptiste · 30/10/2021 13:25

@BrilloPaddy

The plastic waste is horrific, and no one should be doing one "just because".

Absolutely.

Covid isn't going away, so many people have now been vaccinated so let's just get on with life. We're all going to get it at some point and most people will be fine (and I say this as someone who has had to shield in the past)

2389Champ · 30/10/2021 13:32

There’s plans afoot to stop the free handouts for LFTs and if you want them, you’ll need to purchase them in future.

Watch those positive cases plummet…
