To think men's clothing is so practical compared to womens.

I've been searching for a cheapo warm over the bum jacket to knock about in, and nothing suitable in women's department.

However, up in the men's department, there was the perfect jacket... zipped pockets, inside pocket and a peaked hood for the rain. So warm and cosy. NOTHING similar in the women's department. It is zipped so none of that buttons on the other side mullarkey either!

Slippers.... I wanted closed slippers with a decent sole for going outside to put the bins out etc. Women's department full of feathers, diamonds and other fluff and all, apart from (sorry) old lady velcro types were backless, so flip flop flip flop. Got a great pair of memory foam with a great sole and so warm and comfortable, yep... in the mens.

Gilets.... I love them and have several. Saw one in the men's department with exactly the same material as the women's version, BUT with zipped pockets and an inside pocket, so handy. Same price as the womens.

Now bear in mind I was buying for comfort not style or labels and I like nice girly things too, but I detest the puffer coats that make you look like Mr. Michelin. Anyway. I bought them all and am delighted with them all. Size Small fits with a bit of room, but that's ok.

This was all in Primark and the jacket, gilet and slippers cost £45 altogether, what a bargain!

I want women's items to be practical, so AIBU to think they should be?

It’s the same for kids. Girls age10 are tight long/short sleeved on my 9 year old. If I go to boys section, plenty of room and absolutely not tight whatsoever. It’s disgusting to sexualise young girls and to offer more comfort to boys and men.

Medicaltextbook · 25/10/2021 20:00

I have the misfortune to be petite so can’t buy from mens section- for example straightforward practical jumpers at a reasonable price.

BoxOfDreams · 25/10/2021 20:02

I wear mostly mens clothing. Given current trends, I now class myself as non-binary.

CounsellorTroi · 25/10/2021 20:05

Anything that is practical and comfortable tends to be thought of as frumpy.

TAKESNOSHITSHIRLEY · 25/10/2021 20:07

well as a 6ft woman with 36 inch leg and size 12 feet.
all i wear is mens clothes and trainers

im also a K cup but not "big" elsewhere so clothes in womans sizes are to big apart from the bust and are always to short

mens tshirts fit me way better

CocksAndKnobbers · 25/10/2021 20:10

I bloody love an inside pocket and think all coats should have them

CocksAndKnobbers · 25/10/2021 20:11

Men's tee shirts are also generally softer and more comfy than womens

SpamIAm · 25/10/2021 20:12

I hit peak outrage about this when putting trousers on my 3 month old son that had pockets. Do clothes designers really think baby boys need pockets but women don't..?

Ulrichamelo · 25/10/2021 20:16

Yes, I’d spent quite a lot of time buying t shirts from ‘basics’ collections of various stores.
Always riding up , never long enough to go over boobs and hips comfortably.
Primark men’s stretch ones are great for underneath jumpers etc in Winter.

MrsSkylerWhite · 25/10/2021 20:18

I’ve been buying men’s things for years. Ladies pyjamas are far too short in the body for me. T-shirts too short for my liking too.

ErrolTheDragon · 25/10/2021 20:20

YANBU. Of course, it is possible to get a women's jacket with the features you described from outdoors shops, but not for Primark prices.

Sexnotgender · 25/10/2021 20:23

YANBU. Gives me the rage.

Fourstronghocks · 25/10/2021 20:27

YANBU op. The thickness and quality of fabric is so much better too. A man's wool jumper is generally so much more hard wearing than a woman's of the same design and price point.

Hi, yes I have a North Face jacket from when I did the Camino. It was ££££s though, so keeping that in mothballs for further stages and other hikes closer to home. All I wanted was a knockabout jacket (and the other bits mentioned) for casual, care less things!

Good to see others in agreement with me. As a pp also mentioned, it gives me the rage that women's gear is designed as if we are going out on the town no matter what we buy! I feel so much more secure when out and about with an inside pocket or two for phone, keys and debit card. They can take my bag but they will only find women's things in there lol.

Jeans! front pockets on women's jeans are too small to be of any practical use but men's front pockets have plenty of room for a wallet, phone etc.

PinkStink · 25/10/2021 20:46

I bought some combat type trousers from primark for exactly this reason. I also have work polo shirts as there weren't any plain white ones for females when I looked.

ToastCrumbsOnAPlate · 25/10/2021 20:51

I agree op. Men's clothing is made better and of superior fabrics. And the pockets are actually big enough to put your entire phone in. I started making my own stuff for this very reason. Everything I make for myself has huge pocketsSmile

ToastCrumbsOnAPlate · 25/10/2021 20:57

I had an amusing moment a couple of months ago when my husband was looking for a hoodie on Asos. The first few that popped up had weird embroidery on them and tiny pockets , his reaction was hilarious , I just laughed as that's women's clothing all over the place.

Bigassbeebuzzbuzz · 25/10/2021 20:59

Dont get me started on womens clothes having no pockets but mens having enough to store everything. Then theres newborns clothes with pockets Confused why? Takes longer to get them dry too because of the pockets they dont need.
I might have to start looking in the mens section.

Teen boys stuff (nods sagely) am v short arse so age 13 is great for coats!

This. Practical jumper -not a fucking v neck please. Decent one colour PJ and decent slippers. Primark would make a fortune doing the same for men as for women -decent comfy pants etc
AlmostAlwyn · 25/10/2021 21:10

It's totally ridiculous isn't it. I got a winter coat from Trespass last year but almost immediately regretted that I hadn't sent it back (I needed to keep it unfortunately!). Only two pockets hardly big enough for my hands, let alone my phone as well!

Whereas my dad also got a Trespass coat. Bloody 7 pockets it's got!! Angry

I emailed them to point out the disparity and they said they would "forward this design flaw to the design department to take aboard". Forgive me if I don't hold my breath Hmm

NutellaEllaElla · 25/10/2021 21:15

I agree and WHY do men get the warmest, good quality full long sleeved tops and jumpers? Women are always cold because we're the colder sex but also because we get shitty thin tops and faux jumpers. It makes me mad.

StripyHorse · 25/10/2021 21:18

DH tells me I have an obsession with pockets. He doesn't seem to grasp that it isn't an issue to him because everything for men has pockets.

Today I am wearing dungarees, not stylish but comfy and the pockets are a decent size!

0nlyMe · 25/10/2021 21:22

Wholeheartedly agree! My dd has started wearing her brothers jeans/trousers for this reason. Told her we’ll be shopping in the boys section next time she needs clothes.
I’ve been wearing men’s tshirts for years. And dressing gowns- I always buy men’s ones. Women’s are always white or pink and short. Or have a teddy bear on. 😳
