To think men's clothing is so practical compared to womens.

I've been searching for a cheapo warm over the bum jacket to knock about in, and nothing suitable in women's department.

However, up in the men's department, there was the perfect jacket... zipped pockets, inside pocket and a peaked hood for the rain. So warm and cosy. NOTHING similar in the women's department. It is zipped so none of that buttons on the other side mullarkey either!

Slippers.... I wanted closed slippers with a decent sole for going outside to put the bins out etc. Women's department full of feathers, diamonds and other fluff and all, apart from (sorry) old lady velcro types were backless, so flip flop flip flop. Got a great pair of memory foam with a great sole and so warm and comfortable, yep... in the mens.

Gilets.... I love them and have several. Saw one in the men's department with exactly the same material as the women's version, BUT with zipped pockets and an inside pocket, so handy. Same price as the womens.

Now bear in mind I was buying for comfort not style or labels and I like nice girly things too, but I detest the puffer coats that make you look like Mr. Michelin. Anyway. I bought them all and am delighted with them all. Size Small fits with a bit of room, but that's ok.

This was all in Primark and the jacket, gilet and slippers cost £45 altogether, what a bargain!

I want women's items to be practical, so AIBU to think they should be?

Men's socks are a game changer if you have feet at the top end of the women's size.

gofg · 26/10/2021 08:04

Jeans! front pockets on women's jeans are too small to be of any practical use but men's front pockets have plenty of room for a wallet, phone etc.

Funny you should mention that. I recently got a pair of jeans from the UK (I don't live there), and the first thing I thought was how small the pockets are compared to the jeans I buy here! I've never had a pair with such silly pockets before, they really aren't any use and I grumble every time I wear them.

Bouncealot · 26/10/2021 08:07

Work uniforms for women, for instance in supermarkets, can be sexist-the blouson jackets pockets not big enough to hold the MFDs, whilst men’s are, Jean style trousers for women-torture for older people around crotch, whilst men have roomy combats with big pockets. Reason given is ‘women prefer more streamlined, flattering style’. Shoes offered were sensible thicksoled for men, women were offered pumps! I was looking for a replacement for my 15-year-old men’s gortex coat, which is enormous and multipocketed, but oversized. Though I’d found one with decent pockets in Helly Hansen, but although waterproof and warm, can’t get a phone in any of the pockrr we still and none inside.

hangrylady · 26/10/2021 08:09

I agree to an extent but the fact is that a lot of women want clothes that look nice, not a female version of a man's jumper and trousers. If I want a fleece or practical trousers I wouldn't go to Primark, I'd go to a sports shop or somewhere like Mountain Warehouse.

LadyCampanulaTottington · 26/10/2021 08:14

I buy shirts and trousers in the mens department. Men’s shirts somehow magically accommodate breasts without gaping despite most men not having actual breasts.

Trousers are for the pockets and the material. Where I live is really dry in the winter (lots of snow and ice) so wearing polyester means 4 months of, frankly painful, static electric shocks so I have to wear natural materials. Women's are all polyester, mens are viscose, cotton etc.

donemeover · 26/10/2021 08:17

@Bigassbeebuzzbuzz

Dont get me started on womens clothes having no pockets but mens having enough to store everything. Then theres newborns clothes with pockets Confused why? Takes longer to get them dry too because of the pockets they dont need. I might have to start looking in the mens section.
I think the pocket thing is mainly because men don't carry handbags whereas women do tbf
SoupDragon · 26/10/2021 08:18

The complaint is that a man can just go to Primark for practical clothing.

donemeover · 26/10/2021 08:18

@NutellaEllaElla

I agree and WHY do men get the warmest, good quality full long sleeved tops and jumpers? Women are always cold because we're the colder sex but also because we get shitty thin tops and faux jumpers. It makes me mad.
Also I disagree if you go to the right shops and pay not primary prices you can find warm jumpers! I've never struggled finding a winter jumper.
SoupDragon · 26/10/2021 08:18

Which came first, the useless pockets or the handbag?

grannycake · 26/10/2021 08:19

@ErrolTheDragon

YANBU. Of course, it is possible to get a women's jacket with the features you described from outdoors shops, but not for Primark prices.
Yes but men can buy them at Primark prices. I have a couple of expensive Protected Species coats - no inside pockets in those either. Don't get me started on the ridiculous useless pockets in womens jeans
donemeover · 26/10/2021 08:19

@Batshitkerazy

YANBU. I know this thread is about comfort rather than cost but I had the rage in Next the other day - men’s jeans were around £28. Women’s started at £45. It’s ridiculous
Again I disagree. Men's clothe red are notoriously more than women's, next do have women's have jeans for £25!
donemeover · 26/10/2021 08:20

@FuckingFabulous

All clothes are designed to appeal to men.

Theirs for their comfort and practicality.

Ours for what they want to see us wear.

I completely agree with this statement
RampantIvy · 26/10/2021 08:26

I’m with you @tempchecked:

  1. Women’s pyjama trousers are too short
  1. Women’s warm waterproof jackets for walking have arms that are too short, and not enough pockets. I don’t have big boobs so doing them up isn’t an issue. Although this jacket that I currently have is a 3-in-1woman’s jacket with 9 pockets in total, two of them being zipped inside pockets plus two zipped pockets on the inner jacket. I bought it from Decathlon. I didn’t like the furry embellishment on the hood so I removed it. It is totally waterproof as well.
  1. Women’s jumpers often have too many embellishments, and the arms are often too short
  1. Same for sweatshirts

I am not some 6 foot Amazonian, just 5’7” with long arms and legs

I bloody love an inside pocket and think all coats should have them

I agree. I don’t want to carry a bag around every time I leave the house.

You are being unreasonable to think that clothing should be separated by gender

I think they should. Women have lumps and bumps in places that men don’t, and vice versa. Men’s jeans don’t fit me because I have hips and a waist.

Who knows, but I do know most women love a good handbag and choose to carry it they're not forced.
ElftonWednesday · 26/10/2021 08:28

Men's trousers do fit me and I have hips and a waist.

YANBU, I often get men's clothes.

Sexnotgender · 26/10/2021 08:33

In my opinion I want clothes cut for women but for the same quality and price point as the men’s.

I don’t want to have to buy men’s clothes as they are not cut for me.

I’m 5ft 1, I’ve got a female pelvis and have had 3 children so I have wider hips than a male and I’ve got 32F breasts. Men’s clothes are not the answer for me other than a few items like jumpers.

If manufacturers can make decent men’s clothes at an appropriate price point then they should be able to do it for women too.

TimeForTeaAndG · 26/10/2021 08:35

Decent outdoor jackets etc... Decathlon.

ElftonWednesday · 26/10/2021 08:35

I barely even bother with the women's section for outdoor pursuits/walking clothing now either. About ten years ago they started to cut things like fleeces for fashion rather than practicality. I really don't want walking trousers to fit like leggings or a fleece and waterproof jacket skin tight and nipped in at the waist. I can't move properly in the items which are my size or even a size bigger. But men's garments in small fit perfectly as they are straight cut and allow room for movement. And trousers are cut to allow for good thighs (in spite of the fact that loads of men have sparrow legs that are much less beefy than mine).

MamsellMarie · 26/10/2021 08:36

I've been looking lately but I don't suit black and , boy, the mans stuff is dull, apart from the odd scarlety orange.

JingleCatJingle · 26/10/2021 08:36

Try Uniqlo for decent jumpers cut for women.
Stop shopping in Primark, the stuff even from the men’s section doesn’t wear well.

RampantIvy · 26/10/2021 08:37

Who knows, but I do know most women love a good handbag and choose to carry it they're not forced.

Some women. I and most women I know prefer to be unecumbered by a handbag.

I don't see them as a fashion accessory though. Just something practical to carry stuff around in. Since lockdown I have had far less need to carry a bag.

JingleCatJingle · 26/10/2021 08:38

Also Decathlon is very good. Look at the yachting clothes for wet weather wear!

APipkinOfPepper · 26/10/2021 08:41

I only ever buy men’s socks now - they have them in different sizes instead of “one size” in the womens which isn’t quite big enough for my feet. So much comfier and they are longer too. Also hoodies - I want decent length sleeves and proper pockets! The time I bought jeans and didn’t realise they had those pretend pockets - why do they do that?

PlausibleSuit · 26/10/2021 08:43

Women seem to get most of the fun designs of Doc Martens. I wanted some of the polka dot ones released a few weeks ago but they only make them in women's sizes and I'm a men's size 11 so I missed out.

SoupDragon · 26/10/2021 08:45

I do know most women love a good handbag and choose to carry it they're not forced.

Where do they put their keys, phone and purse if they don't take a bag?

It's OK if you're wearing a hoody with a pouch or a coat with halfway decent pockets but in the summer there's nothing¿ you need a bag (even now I've ditched cash and only take my phone and cards with me!) A bag is not a "want" for me, it's a necessity.
