To think men's clothing is so practical compared to womens.

I've been searching for a cheapo warm over the bum jacket to knock about in, and nothing suitable in women's department.

However, up in the men's department, there was the perfect jacket... zipped pockets, inside pocket and a peaked hood for the rain. So warm and cosy. NOTHING similar in the women's department. It is zipped so none of that buttons on the other side mullarkey either!

Slippers.... I wanted closed slippers with a decent sole for going outside to put the bins out etc. Women's department full of feathers, diamonds and other fluff and all, apart from (sorry) old lady velcro types were backless, so flip flop flip flop. Got a great pair of memory foam with a great sole and so warm and comfortable, yep... in the mens.

Gilets.... I love them and have several. Saw one in the men's department with exactly the same material as the women's version, BUT with zipped pockets and an inside pocket, so handy. Same price as the womens.

Now bear in mind I was buying for comfort not style or labels and I like nice girly things too, but I detest the puffer coats that make you look like Mr. Michelin. Anyway. I bought them all and am delighted with them all. Size Small fits with a bit of room, but that's ok.

This was all in Primark and the jacket, gilet and slippers cost £45 altogether, what a bargain!

I want women's items to be practical, so AIBU to think they should be?

Buying sports underwear - men's are all about being wicking, preventing chaffing etc. Women's - look ladies, no visible panty line.

I really couldn't give two hoots about whether or not somebody can see the outline of my underwear when I'm running, I want the wicking, non-chaffing features.

Leftbutcameback · 26/10/2021 16:32

My work shirt arrived last year - the material is so see through I had to wear a t-shirt underneath. Why is it made from different material from the men's short, which is thicker?! No good reason.

JingleCatJingle · 26/10/2021 17:48

@JustFrustrated try
www.bravissimo.com/ Or Uniqlo for simple and straightforward bras. Look for t-shirt bras they are very plain.

KatherineJaneway · 26/10/2021 19:50

The time I bought jeans and didn’t realise they had those pretend pockets - why do they do that?

Over the bum? If so false pockets are designed to make your bum look "better" or smaller

Meloncurse · 26/10/2021 19:59

What age boys clothing do you think is the next size down from men's extra small? I tried buying men's xs pyjama bottoms last year but they were too big

I'd guess age 13. Best to just try some on though as it's so variable.

I’d say 10/11 or 12. I’ve got a north face boys fleece in age 13 that fits perfectly and I’m a 12 on top.
HeronLanyon · 26/10/2021 21:38

Yes I’ve bought boys’ 13-14 stuff before and men’s’ small for things I want loose or Xs. In fact wearing men’s medium henley t shirt as I type !

felulageller · 26/10/2021 22:19

It pisses me off.

I want pockets and pink!!

Binfairy · 26/10/2021 22:51

For good quality clothing that's practical, I'd recommend Land's End. I have fleeces, gilet, jumpers, long sleeve t-shirts, and long nightdresses. My Squall coat from them is indestructible. It's cut for women but is hard wearing and in a wide range of colours. My other recommendation is Sea salt. Their dresses are wonderful and have pockets! I have a selection that are my winter work uniform, worn with blissfully comfy Snag tights. Their jumpers are also good; I have a couple. For slippers with a back, Marks do them or I wear the boot style ones from Joules (who also do nice socks and cotton tops and sweatshirts).

ErrolTheDragon · 26/10/2021 23:47

Lands End do have some decent practical stuff, in petite sizes too - and also for kids.

FlatteredFool · 27/10/2021 00:20

I've been considering wearing a tie with my suit recently. I love ties. I think I might also start looking in the men's section for things. I bet they're dicks don't wear away as quickly either.

AngeloMysterioso · 27/10/2021 00:38

Last year I got myself and DH a pair of those matching tartan Christmas pyjamas from M&S. His manly men’s pyjama bottoms have pockets. My little lady pyjamas do not.

Why, M&S, why???

AngeloMysterioso · 27/10/2021 00:45

And they’ve done the same fucking thing this year. In fact in the photos, the male model has his manly hand in one of the manly pockets. Item description says “Bottoms feature an elasticated waist, functional fly and handy side pockets”.

No handy side pockets for us women though. Just “An elasticated waist ensures extra comfort.”

coogee · 27/10/2021 12:23

Why do you need/want pockets in pyjamas?

RampantIvy · 27/10/2021 12:26

To put a tissue in of course

ToastCrumbsOnAPlate · 27/10/2021 12:45

@coogee also to take my son's night feed bottle into the living room when we get up in the morning.

HeronLanyon · 27/10/2021 12:56

It’s v odd for women (or anyone) to need to justify use of a pocket surely on item which may be worn out of bed around the house, or if ill, all day, or when in hospital etc. ?
Aren’t we all able to use pockets as we see fit ?

YawningAngel · 27/10/2021 13:20

YANBU. I recall reading research on this sort of thing a few years back. Someone took the time to compare pocket size between women's and men's versions of jeans, and the women's pockets were much shorter in depth. I think by as much as 4 inches.

I have a pair of womens jeans I was given as a gift. The pockets are so shallow I can't even get my hand in them! Anything I put in the pockets falls out onto the floor when I go to the loo. By contrast, the pockets in the men's jeans I buy for myself almost reach my knees.

I'm obsessed with pockets, and I won't buy outerwear unless pockets are on there and big enough. Also, why are women's clothes so often made of revolting fabrics? I hate synthetic stuff like polyester, and why does everything have to have bloody elastane lurking in it somewhere?

Hemingwayscats · 27/10/2021 13:22

I’ve always wondered why boys shorts are knee length but girls shorts barely cover their bums, I don’t understand it at all. Pockets are always an issue with women’s clothing, the best brand is Lucy&Yak because all of their clothes have deep pockets. I don’t use handbags because I just can’t be bothered lugging one around so I rely on decent pockets.

LoathesomeLinsey · 27/10/2021 13:24

Yanbu. I shop in the men's section quite a lot!

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 27/10/2021 13:24

Depends where you shop really, I buy cotton traders stuff online a lot for outdoor wear. They have a lot of unisex clothing that you describe that is ideal.

KatherineofGaunt · 27/10/2021 13:36

For some reason, it never occurred to me to buy men's t-shirts in a size small. I get fed up every summer of trying to buy some plain t-shirts but so often find that the material is basically see-through, requiring me to wear a vest underneath, therefore doubling the layer of a top to wear when it's really warm. Next year, I'm heading to the men's section!

Leftbutcameback · 27/10/2021 13:50

Good point about Lucy & Yak - my cord dungarees have marvellous pockets! I particularly like the low side ones

Moonface123 · 27/10/2021 14:18

I don't agree, there are lots of places for women that stock practical clothes, Mountain Warehouse, Sports Direct, Lands End, Fat Face etc and loads more online such as Amazon and Ebay.
Primark is full of utter junk, l don't shop there, their clothes are not made to last, they want customers to be constantly rebuying.
