To think men's clothing is so practical compared to womens.

I've been searching for a cheapo warm over the bum jacket to knock about in, and nothing suitable in women's department.

However, up in the men's department, there was the perfect jacket... zipped pockets, inside pocket and a peaked hood for the rain. So warm and cosy. NOTHING similar in the women's department. It is zipped so none of that buttons on the other side mullarkey either!

Slippers.... I wanted closed slippers with a decent sole for going outside to put the bins out etc. Women's department full of feathers, diamonds and other fluff and all, apart from (sorry) old lady velcro types were backless, so flip flop flip flop. Got a great pair of memory foam with a great sole and so warm and comfortable, yep... in the mens.

Gilets.... I love them and have several. Saw one in the men's department with exactly the same material as the women's version, BUT with zipped pockets and an inside pocket, so handy. Same price as the womens.

Now bear in mind I was buying for comfort not style or labels and I like nice girly things too, but I detest the puffer coats that make you look like Mr. Michelin. Anyway. I bought them all and am delighted with them all. Size Small fits with a bit of room, but that's ok.

This was all in Primark and the jacket, gilet and slippers cost £45 altogether, what a bargain!

I want women's items to be practical, so AIBU to think they should be?

You are being unreasonable to think that clothing should be separated by gender.

Try to be 5 ft and petite, Boys clothes are not as good as men clothes

So I have to stick to women selection

lomoloko · 26/10/2021 01:36

Yep, I buy mens jumpers, trousers, coats--- all sorts of things where I want to be warm, equipped with pockets etc.

What surprises me is how well mens trousers can fit sometimes when I am very curvy. Uniqlo chinos in short leg fit really well.

I'm 5'2" and wear a US size 0. I manage.

It has always been like that. Look at old photographs from long ago - what are the men wearing ? Exactly the same practical, sensible trousers and jackets that are available now. And the women are in an array of ridiculously inappropriate, uncomfortable garments , because that's what was in fashion ! No wonder men were climbing mountains and discovering lost treasure, while women sat genteelly in their fashionable garments and sipped tea. Fashion has held women back for centuries , and it is still happening today.

I just bought some men's hoodies and in the summer I bought men's swim shorts so I don't have to worry about my bikini line whenever I take the kids swimming.

immersivereader · 26/10/2021 02:38

Yup. Boys clothes too are far better quality, it's ridiculous.

Werehamster · 26/10/2021 02:51

My youngest daughter hates pants with lace or glitter on them. It can be hard finding girl's pants without lace or glitter. She just wants plain, white pants. No unicorns, no ribbons, no pink, no princesses.

Manufacturers and retailers make clothes for the 2 sexes.

The ones made for males are generally I’ve found higher quality and more practical. Which is frustrating.

I found M&S boy shorts good for my daughter. Not sure if they still make them? They were excellent and just plain colours/white.
Ylvamoon · 26/10/2021 07:18

Yep, mesns jumpers! Warm Soft Cosy Longer Thicker and overall soo much better value for money!

pelosi · 26/10/2021 07:20

My winter hoodies from Uniqlo are windproof with THREE zipped pockets on the front, two inside and an great hood that protects the whole head.

I love Primark but yes, some of their women’s winter gear is not practical.

However, they have a women’s fleece hoodie right now that has zipped pockets, for £12.

I hope M&S buy a clue that people are having to buy shorts from the boy’s section, and don’t just put the sales surge to more being bought for boys.

They’re in the girls section but called boy shorts. Sorry I probably wasn’t very clear 🙈 in my defence I’ve been up 1/2 the night with a baby 🙁

I just ordered myself some new cashmere jumpers from the men’s department. They look much better quality!

There are lots of brands that do do appropriate clothes for women. Coats for example lots of proper coat brands will do what your looking for, I have never had a problem with a coat not having pockets. Backless slippers for women exist all over the Internet

Don't get me wrong often shops like primark make their women's clothes impractical. But there are many brands that dont

Instead of buying mens buy proper womens clothes. Reward brands that do do proper practical women's clothing. Why would primark bother making a practical women's coat if everyone just buys their mens one? Why bother making 2 shapes of practical t-shirt when everyone who wants practical buys mens?

MarleneDietrichsSmile · 26/10/2021 07:39

I spend most of my time in outdoorsy or sporty clothes and never had a problem finding what I need

Maybe you shop in the wrong places?

Treifec · 26/10/2021 07:44

I pretty much only buy mens or boys clothes apart from bras. I find them generally more comfortable, more pockets and better quality.

FreedomFaith · 26/10/2021 07:47

Yes agreed. Womens clothing seems designed to keep us cold. We are generally colder than men anyway or feel the cold more I should say, so our clothes are thinner than theirs? That makes sense... Not.

I'm having to buy mens joggers because I can't find any useful, thick ones for winter in women's departments. Go to the men's, oh look, loads. Hmm Women get the thin, shitty material.

SoupDragon · 26/10/2021 07:48

I buy men's joggers because they are longer and have better pockets.

EishetChayil · 26/10/2021 07:48

I mostly wear men's clothes, and buy from the boys' section for toddler DD. Sick of all the fluff and lack of pockets.

HeronLanyon · 26/10/2021 07:53

I buy quite a few item advertised as for men. Mostly outdoor warm stuff for all reasons outlined above. Quality and practical features. Increasingly colours are more varied also.
Joggers, waterproof jackets, sweats of all sorts, t shirts, shirts.
It’s also bizarre what is filtered out by sex. I bought a great work bag which was advertised in ‘bags-men’ ffs. I haven’t had uncertainties about my sex whilst using it.

I have a lot of womans outdoor clothes ... and they are great quality. But also expensive. Grated they last for years.

I buy some mens clothes for warmth, comfort, quality and price.
