To have a massive fear of sunflower plants...?

I had never really noticed them until our son started school a few weeks ago...

There's a giant (I mean it's HUUGE) sunflower in the garden in front of the Reception class. I had never seen one that up close before but my goddess they are frightening. The seeds. THE SEEDS. The thing is covered in seeds. Just typing this is giving me the shivers.

How did I never realise this? Now I feel anxious during school drop offs and pick ups? It's so bad. I can't deal with this huge flower staring at me 😖😣😰 Makes my skin crawl.

How am I going to cope with facing this flower on a daily basis?
Is this even a thing?
I told my husband about and I felt silly and unreasonable describing my fear of it 😩😩

And I also annoyingly made the mistake of typing 'fear of sunflower plant' on Google which means my social feeds is flooded with suggestions of sunflower vids! Urghhh.

Ours are still in flower. And yes I like them. One's grown really tall, leaves the size of dinner plates, flowers the size of saucers.

But I'll admit the seedheads could look a bit creepy. Maybe I'll cut them off when they get that far.

I like them in fields as seen from afar but they are very weird looking. I totally agree with you. Love sunflower seeds too. I have the same thing with abandoned wasps nests, with the little cubicles...yuk. Can´t touch them.

Showmethefood · 19/10/2021 14:58

I have this. It’s because they’re so tall and look down on you and their faces are daunting 😂😂 I really feel scared of them which sounds ridiculous but it’s the truth.

Lillyhatesjaz · 19/10/2021 16:29

I love sunflowers I have a lot on my allotment and I am leaving the seeds for the birds. I do however hate jewelry even typing the word is an effort I always position myself in cafes so as not to look towards people wearing particularly yucky stuff

I am curious but have never watched the pimple popper videos simply because I'm not sure how I'd react to them and I'm certain I'll NEVER be able to unsee it 😫😨😨

I am not even curious about them, I will never watch one Envy

I know it’s weird but is there such a thing as trypophilia? Because I kind of love the images of holes and seeds, even the weird ones where they are photoshopped to look gross.

Interesting, do you like 'pimple popper videos'? If so, I wonder if it is related.

Don't ever look at chigger* removal videos then, they are really nightmarish and I'm okay to watch/have most medical procedures.

*chiggers or sand fleas burrow into feet...

Omg I've heard of chiggers before! They burrow into the feet and have to be removed. Gross 🤮

That's how I feel. 😰It's a gigantic flower with a huge smiley face that looks menacing up close. No thank you 😬

Why do they they have to be so freakishly huge though? Are there any other flowers like this?

Oh my goodness they are terrifying! Far too big , I just imagine they are going to chase me the fear started when I was in Nursery and our caretaker thought it would be a ‘good idea’ to grow them Hmm they are awful

Ozgirl75 · 19/10/2021 23:16

No, I’ve never watched a pimple popper video - it’s more that I like the things in nature that form these patterns, seeds, flowers, fungi etc. Even those weird frogs with the babies on their backs.
I don’t “like” the ones that signify disease (although they don’t really gross me out), but even as a child I loved poppy seed pods, toadstools, sunflowers, anything with a pattern etc

amusedbush · 19/10/2021 23:22

I get it, they are really creepy and ominous. It's made worse by the fact that I tried to pull a few seeds out of a giant one in our front garden when I was a kid and a fucking massive spider climbed out of the middle of it. I'm itchy just thinking about it.

mrsbyers · 19/10/2021 23:51

Me too ! I think it stems from the vitality adverts

Summerdayshaze · 19/10/2021 23:55

They are creepy and sinister. They seem to be watching us.

confusedmummy123 · 19/10/2021 23:59

Tyrophobia. I remember years ago cleaning for my mum and saying something like the patterns of the floor cloth made me feel funny. My mum looked at me very strangly lol. But things like that continued to make me feel all weird amd goosepipmly. Years later I discovered by accident something called tyrophobia and it all made sense. Also I was glad to tell my mum it was an actual thing and I wasn't just being a weirdo!! I can't stand the sight of cheese oozing through a cheese grater. I tell boyfriend this but he looks at me like I'm a cheese slice short of a sandwich! 🙄

CuntyMcBollocks · 20/10/2021 02:01

YANBU! I hate the things myself, especially the ones with massive heads. They're just too big and creepy. My friends and family find it hilarious that I'm scared of them.

plominoagain · 20/10/2021 04:45

I read somewhere that something like 40 percent of people have trypophobia . It wouldn’t surprise me at all . Some complete arse posted lotus seed pod pictures on my Facebook and it properly disturbed my sleep for weeks . Kicked them off sharpish .

Welshiefluff · 20/10/2021 07:38

Same here opie.

RAFHercules · 20/10/2021 09:12

I hear you OP, there's a multi storey car park in a nearby town that is covered in holes, it is hideous. Every time I drive past I imagine giant worms poking their heads out of them. Sad
