To have a massive fear of sunflower plants...?

I had never really noticed them until our son started school a few weeks ago...

There's a giant (I mean it's HUUGE) sunflower in the garden in front of the Reception class. I had never seen one that up close before but my goddess they are frightening. The seeds. THE SEEDS. The thing is covered in seeds. Just typing this is giving me the shivers.

How did I never realise this? Now I feel anxious during school drop offs and pick ups? It's so bad. I can't deal with this huge flower staring at me 😖😣😰 Makes my skin crawl.

How am I going to cope with facing this flower on a daily basis?
Is this even a thing?
I told my husband about and I felt silly and unreasonable describing my fear of it 😩😩

And I also annoyingly made the mistake of typing 'fear of sunflower plant' on Google which means my social feeds is flooded with suggestions of sunflower vids! Urghhh.

You are suppose to pick out seeds to make a smiley face on the sunflower head.
Might make it seem more friendly…

I can't imagine ever attempting that 😂😂😂

Sounds like a variation of Trypophobia.

SylvanasWindrunner · 18/10/2021 14:51

Might be setting off some trypophobia!

WhiteWhiteWhite · 18/10/2021 14:51

Maybe you have trypophobia? It's a fear of holes, or in this case, seeds. You can Google some images if you think it won't set you off again.

WhiteWhiteWhite · 18/10/2021 14:51

Too slow! Grin

CarvingHarris · 18/10/2021 14:52

@OP you're not the only. I hate sunflowers, they're just creepy, like they're waiting, all big and disturbingly smiley to entice you near before opening up (to reveal fangs) to eat you alive.

HauteGirlSummer · 18/10/2021 14:53

Omg I don't even want to look that up because Google will suggest images. It's the seed clusters that I can't stand 😰😰😰

Exactly this is how I imagine them. How have they not been used in horror movies before??

Your description sounds like Trypophobia (Don't google it, lots of pics) a fear of groups of small holes or bumps.
My hypothesis is that it relates to disease or insect infestation and is a form of exaggerated disgust.

OneTC · 18/10/2021 14:58

Illogical fear is illogical fear obviously!

I'm scared of certain types of machinery that I've never even seen

Laiste · 18/10/2021 15:00

YANBU.

I have a touch of triophobia but it seems to manifest in odd/unexpected ways.

I'm fine with the poppy seed heads and crumpets, but i don't like lots of little bumpy things together Hmm

Deep breath ...

  • the thing which really freaked me out recently was when i mowed the lawn and ran the mower over a big clump of dark coloured toadstools. The mower took the caps clean off and left this AWFUL patch of black rubbery stalks all close together and sticking up the same height as the grass. I ran my flip flop across them and they were stiff and wibbly and 'orrible! I wont walk near that patch of grass now.

UGH.

Sniv · 18/10/2021 15:04

I do kind of get it. A whole field of sunflowers looks nice, or a line of them growing up a fence looks lovely, especially when the flower head has more daisy-like proportions. But then you get the odd spindly loner sunflower that just looks like a mutant triffid. A face-sized flower on a spindly person-high stalk; the scraggy ring of crumpled petals round the huge, brown bristly disc of florets. They don't scare me, but they're really not pretty.

Cardboardboxingring · 18/10/2021 15:05

YANBU but if it makes you feel better it probably won't be around for much longer! Smile

FangsForTheMemory · 18/10/2021 15:06

They are brilliant for birds, though, especially greenfinches.

CustardySergeant · 18/10/2021 15:07

I haven't got a fear of sunflowers nor trypophobia, but I absolutely hate sunflowers. Most people seem to love them, think they're cheerful or something, but I just think they're like huge really ugly weeds. I don't think I've ever got close enough to one to see the seeds.

eddiemairswife · 18/10/2021 15:08

Don't read 'The Day of the Triffids' then.

iklboo · 18/10/2021 15:08

They always remind me of Triffids.

Laiste · 18/10/2021 15:11

Our tomato plant is an awful thing which i keep giving the side eye. It looks like a terrible dead thing (no leaves, long brown stalks all flopped over) It looks dead but it keeps producing tomatoes Hmm I mean HOW? i wont eat them

lazyarse123 · 18/10/2021 15:14

I hate them too. We sell bunches of them at work and someone asked me to open them. Err nope there is no way I am risking them touching me.

ColourHex · 18/10/2021 15:19

Yanbu so glad I'm not the only one! They really freak me out, always have.

SirenSays · 18/10/2021 15:23

This is so shocking to me. I love them they're my absolute favourite flower 🌻 you'd have hated it here, I planted about 40 this summer and now I've got the heads drying out so I can take the seeds for next year.

Lavendersquare · 18/10/2021 15:25

@HauteGirlSummer I completely understand, personally I love sunflowers but do have a secret fear of giant poppies. I accept it's irrational but as a child I imagined touching the black centre and it biting my finger. Although I'm now an adult and know poppies don't bite, my fear of them remains.

DoYouLikeOwls · 18/10/2021 15:25

I have this.

Even balloon clusters freak me out.

hazelnutpraline · 18/10/2021 15:26

I used to feel the same about this huge (like 5 foot across) succulent/cactus thing with massive leaves in my neighbour’s front garden. it reminded me of little shop of horrors and made me feel sick, I’d cross the road to avoid walking directly past it
