To have a massive fear of sunflower plants...?

I had never really noticed them until our son started school a few weeks ago...

There's a giant (I mean it's HUUGE) sunflower in the garden in front of the Reception class. I had never seen one that up close before but my goddess they are frightening. The seeds. THE SEEDS. The thing is covered in seeds. Just typing this is giving me the shivers.

How did I never realise this? Now I feel anxious during school drop offs and pick ups? It's so bad. I can't deal with this huge flower staring at me 😖😣😰 Makes my skin crawl.

How am I going to cope with facing this flower on a daily basis?
Is this even a thing?
I told my husband about and I felt silly and unreasonable describing my fear of it 😩😩

And I also annoyingly made the mistake of typing 'fear of sunflower plant' on Google which means my social feeds is flooded with suggestions of sunflower vids! Urghhh.

I can understand your fear because this reminds me of a nightmare I had where there were pine nuts growing out of my leg, like seeds in a sunflower. It sounds silly but was one of the most horrific dreams I've ever had and the image took a long time to go away. Oh my god it was awful. Maybe i have this phobia too!

WalkingOnTheCracks · 18/10/2021 21:40

@Mermaidwaves

They supposedly face each other if its dull to give each other energy which I find rather endearing Smile
How would that work? If they’re in a row, how do they know which way to turn? What if there’s an odd number of them? Do the taller ones bend over a bit? How is the energy transferred? How do they know how to share it out equitably? What happens if one of them won’t play?
Thehop · 18/10/2021 21:50

I’ve never been bothered but watched a video the other day of a man smashing them for the seeds and it was very odd.

APeakyBlinder · 18/10/2021 22:22

I have this and also trypophobia! Finally someone else who gets me Grin

This reminds me of the next door post floating around the internet

Magnalux · 18/10/2021 22:52

I only use the top long bit of a butternut squash cos the inside seed bits give me the heeby jeebies..and don’t get me started on the inside of a pumpkin 😵‍💫.

Flowersinthefireplace · 18/10/2021 22:57

the thing which really freaked me out recently was when i mowed the lawn and ran the mower over a big clump of dark coloured toadstools. The mower took the caps clean off and left this AWFUL patch of black rubbery stalks all close together and sticking up the same height as the grass

Truly truly horrific. Sometimes when I cook pasta tubes when I’ve drained the pan there are a clump of them standing upright together. Honestly it’s one of the worst thing I’ve even seen. Thinking about it is making me wiggle

A similar video popped on my Instagram explore page and I had to quickly block it. I blame Google 😑🙄😓

Is this a trap? I will not be clicking this link... 😫

It is a link to Amazon for some sunflower seeds... for plants that reach 3m. There is a pretty picture of one too.

BoxOfDreams · 19/10/2021 00:40

You might want to avoid any Van Gough exhibitions too OP 😄

PanicStationsAhh · 19/10/2021 00:46

I'm torn on this. From a distance of a few feet away they're lovely looking so I do like them, and I don't mind smaller ones in vases etc, but, yes can totally relate with the absolutely massive headed ones, and it because of trypophobia I think. Up close they are freaky.

Maybe put a paper bag over it next time you pass?!

JCFJW · 19/10/2021 00:48

Im the same! I find them really oppressive.

ImTheOnlyUpsyOne · 19/10/2021 00:52

I have this same problem...reading this has made my skin crawl...you are not aloneOP

MadCattery · 19/10/2021 00:58

I have some degree of trypophobia. Don’t ever look at a lotus seed pod. It’s a nightmare inducing thing. Sunflowers are ok, though. I live in Florida, and the parrots come and clean out the seeds long before they are completely ripe, so from the window, they just look like flowers, until they are chewed up things with no seeds.

Magissa · 19/10/2021 00:58

The fear of sunflowers is called Helianthophobia. I used to hate it when my dc were at primary school. They seemed to be bringing home sunflower plants every week in plastic cups.

mountbattenbergcake · 19/10/2021 03:39

I think I have trypophobia, but mine is related to skin, I can’t bear to look at clusters of postules for example. I have just YouTubed harvesting of giant sunflowers for their seeds, and whilst part of me thought the seed clusters were beautiful in their mathematical symmetry, they did make me slightly grossed out too.

Urgh, I just did, and an image came up of a man with lotus seed postules photoshopped on his face.
Ozgirl75 · 19/10/2021 07:16

I know it’s weird but is there such a thing as trypophilia? Because I kind of love the images of holes and seeds, even the weird ones where they are photoshopped to look gross.

To be honest, some of the stories on here have proper creeped me out and I can't seem to shake these images off my mind 😰😰 Especially the one where the PP was mowing the lawn and cut open the toadstools 😵‍💫😵‍💫 I feel weird thinking about it . Proper skin crawling

Interesting, do you like 'pimple popper videos'? If so, I wonder if it is related.

I am curious but have never watched the pimple popper videos simply because I'm not sure how I'd react to them and I'm certain I'll NEVER be able to unsee it 😫😨😨
