To have a massive fear of sunflower plants...?

I had never really noticed them until our son started school a few weeks ago...

There's a giant (I mean it's HUUGE) sunflower in the garden in front of the Reception class. I had never seen one that up close before but my goddess they are frightening. The seeds. THE SEEDS. The thing is covered in seeds. Just typing this is giving me the shivers.

How did I never realise this? Now I feel anxious during school drop offs and pick ups? It's so bad. I can't deal with this huge flower staring at me 😖😣😰 Makes my skin crawl.

How am I going to cope with facing this flower on a daily basis?
Is this even a thing?
I told my husband about and I felt silly and unreasonable describing my fear of it 😩😩

And I also annoyingly made the mistake of typing 'fear of sunflower plant' on Google which means my social feeds is flooded with suggestions of sunflower vids! Urghhh.

@LaurieFairyCake

Oh I love that they face each other to give each other energy

That's so beautiful

They don't. That is a myth that is shared all the time on FB.

Or quite sinister, passing on their energy to each other to take over the world 😱

OMG I have found my people. When I was around 9 or 10 I was looking out of my friends bedroom window and she pointed out a row of sunflowers in a neighbours garden . They were all normal except one which was freakishly deformed. The flower was sort of flat on the top of the stalk which was gnarled and horrible . My friend wanted to go down and take a closer look . I went home . I still can’t look at them , and would never touch one .

I see your fear, and raise you ....

my hideous embarrassment.

I was walking my dogs yesterday, didn't have my specs on, and waved, yes WAVED to a giant sunflower in my neighbour's garden. Not only waved, but also shouted "Hi Liz". Yes, I thought that a 7ft tall sunflower was Liz-round-the-corner, wearing a yellow hat Blush.

Naturally to compound my embarrassment, Colin-next-door-to-Liz was just getting out of his car and failed to stifle his laughter, although he did try, bless him. Blush

Grin Grin

Good for Colin for trying! Grin

FoxyAunt · 18/10/2021 17:50

I have trypophobia … honestly the thought of those seeds makes my skin crawl …. Seeds in melons also … ergh

Underamour · 18/10/2021 17:55

Go and google “The Triffids” Grin you might not sleep though.

JerkintheMerkin · 18/10/2021 18:00

I LOVE sunflowers. I love how unnaturally large they are. Weird I know.

EnigmaCat · 18/10/2021 18:22

The deformed sunflowers are displaying fasciation, lots of plants do.
Google if you like strange things, some of the resulting plants are so odd they don't look real.

I like them at a long distance. I can't stand then up close. I hate the look of lots of seeds together in something. I am the same with those melons that have all the seeds in. Something about it is just so gross.

I really like sunflowers, but we have an east-facing garden. I tried growing them once. They all turned their back on me and smiled/leered at the neighbours whose gardens back onto ours instead. I really hope I wasn't the cause of some poor soul hiding indoors all summer.

AmberLynn1536 · 18/10/2021 19:14

Is it more revulsion than fear?

Cdstjooyv · 18/10/2021 19:58

I detest the things. The neighbour over the road has 3 and I hate seeing them every morning. They make my insides feel so weird! No help, but you’re not alone!

TracyLords · 18/10/2021 20:14

Trypophobiaa

TheVolturi · 18/10/2021 20:35

Definitely trypophobia! I have this and clusters of absolutely anything make me shudder. Sunflowerseeds are a good example. Honeycomb, and even those judges wigs up close, urgh.

TheUnbearable · 18/10/2021 20:36

There was a competition in my road to grow the tallest sunflower this summer, I didn’t win. They were everywhere.

wizzywig · 18/10/2021 20:39

They are vile. Big massive arsehole plants that will smile as they kill you. I have the holey plant phobia too. I felt like being sick reading your post. (Sorry)

33goingon64 · 18/10/2021 20:42

Yes me too. I am trypophobic and can't look at sunflowers. But it's not just the seeds it's the size of them and the way they looking armies of faceless soldiers in fields (especially in France).

OrangeSamphire · 18/10/2021 20:46

YANBU.

I’m allergic to sunflower seeds. As in, they can actually kill me.

Hate the bastards.

CouldIhaveaword · 18/10/2021 21:18

You know that they can turn their heads to watch you when your back is turned

JollyHostess · 18/10/2021 21:27

I'll tell you what's really creepy...a whole field of dead sunflowers. Ominous looking.

IgiveupallthenamesIwantedareg0 · 18/10/2021 21:33

OP: I LOVE big, huge sunflowers, bowing and nodding in the breeze!
You should read "The Day of the Tripids" - that will really freak you out !
