@IpanemaPeaHen

Saudade (Brazilian Portuguese) an intense sadness or longing, kind of melancholy.
It's also in Portuguese Portuguese. A lovely concept. Nostalgia is the closest thing in English, I suppose, but it's not the kind of jolly, flag-waving nostalgia the English generally go in for.

Anyway, in the spirit of the thread, "aswell" is not a word, and when I see it, I hear it with a hard "s" - "a swell".

I wish there was a word for a ‘present’ that someone gives pretending to be generous but really just wanting to get rid of an unwanted item.

Chunkymenrock · 16/10/2021 22:03

@Thefartingsofaofdenmarkstreet

I love wallah!
Why?! It's hideous! It's meant to be "voila' which is French. Smile

That’s called re-gifting. Although it could be argued that’s a made up word too.
QuestionableMouse · 16/10/2021 22:06

Non is a word, or a prefix at least and is in front of hundreds of words.

Mistressofnone · 16/10/2021 22:07

Pomped

NoWireHangersEver · 16/10/2021 22:07

From Chinese

姗姗 (shanshan) the sound of a woman walking in a shuffly way

抱不平 (bao buping) to be offended on behalf of somebody else

白左 (baizuo) a self-important, moralistic Western leftist

EugeniaGrace · 16/10/2021 22:07

@Sparklfairy yes, limbo works but doesn’t imply the intense discomfort.

Or maybe I just intensely dislike being in limbo.

Isn't that a white elephant?
MrsAvocet · 16/10/2021 22:09

I thought wallah was a real word from India. I'm sure I've seen it in books about the British Raj - a servant who makes the tea referred to as the tea wallah for instance.

LegArmpits · 16/10/2021 22:10

Dinning.

As in Dinning Table Needs Gone.

Choccyp1g · 16/10/2021 22:11

@TranquilityofSolitude

Not quite where you started, but I want a word for my daughter's MIL. We're friends and live around the corner from each other, so often need to introduce the other to someone and there's just no good word for our relationship. We end up saying "our children are married to each other", which feels a bit inadequate.
I think Russian has a word for this, but it might only work when there are grandchildren in common.
Gwrach · 16/10/2021 22:14

Hiraeth in Welsh has no direct English translation. It's like a deep longing and want for home (Wales)

Alonelonelylonersbadidea · 16/10/2021 22:14

That's exactly what a wallah is @MrsAvocet and I use it all the time.
I love it! Did the person above really mean wallah or voilà?

buntywindermere · 16/10/2021 22:15

Definately.

It is. But that's not how most people are using it. They are misspelling Voilà. But not everyone has had a decent education so it's not always their fault.
upinaballoon · 16/10/2021 22:16

The wallah was the servant. The chah wallah made the cha (tea), the punkah wallah gently raised and lowered the big fan, the punka/punkah, in the corner of the room to make a breeze and I think the dhobi wallah did the washing, and now I'll have to look them all up. Nice thread.

The habitual use of ect rather than etc really bothers me - it's not even an auto correct

SpindelWhorl · 16/10/2021 22:18

白左 (baizuo) a self-important, moralistic Western leftist

OMG the Chinese invented a word for Little Owen Jones?

Porfre · 16/10/2021 22:19

@Standrewsschool

Que really annoys me. I’ve seen it a lot recently.
Took me a while to figure this one out.

Was pronouncing it Kay similar to the spanish way

Isn't that nostalgia?
PinkSkiesAtNight · 16/10/2021 22:20

Agujetas: muscular pain that comes specifically from exercise. As in 'Tengo (I have) agujetas'
From Spanish

Libertaire · 16/10/2021 22:20

English would benefit from an impersonal version of the word ‘you’, to be used when speaking to someone who is acting as the representative of an organisation. For example ; when a business has messed up and a customer wants to complain about the service without seeming to personally blame the individual they are speaking to.

rainraim · 16/10/2021 22:25

@SpangoDweller what is wallah used for?
