To think Strictly is just a bit....shit?!

I know the majority will disagree with me but .....

I never watch it, but tonight thought I’d put it on. Just watched the last 40 mins of it and am finding it one big cringe/ cheese/ bore fest.

I have no idea who any of the ‘celebs’ are, I’ve thought all the dances have been a bit meh. The judges all seem to be clamouring over one another for attention.

I’m a big fan of dancing on ice and always watch that, but I guess I like that because of the danger element, just makes it a bit more exciting.

I’m just bored watching this and struggling with all the gushy cheesiness.

Am I the only one who doesn’t get the massive hype around it?

I still love it.

I love all the associations of it. To me it means:

Autumn and the run up to Christmas.
Cosy nights in.
Red wine.
Fire and candles lit.
Saturday night at home.
Nice picky food.
Family chats about views on the music, costume, dance.
Laughing at or complaining about the judges.
The few dances which just work and you go I LOVED THAT and want to watch it again.
The fact it's been a constant as the kids have grown up.
Memories of Bruce.
Love Claudia.
Sparkle and glitter over the topness.

It's just means a cosy night at home with family to me and I love that.

Could do without all the chat before the dances, but that gives me time to go to the loo & get more wine.

Tagcurious · 17/10/2021 14:18

My life is pretty good so I don’t really subscribe to the bread and circuses idea as far as I am concerned.

Firesidefox · 17/10/2021 14:21

Totally agree OP! It's shite and I don't understand why people like it.

tttigress · 17/10/2021 14:31

I guess it might have been interesting for the first few series after they rebooted Come Dancing as Strictly.

But I think they need to give it a rest now.

BobMortimersPetOwl · 17/10/2021 14:39

Agree, I think its an absolute crock of shite. Same for all the other talent showcase type shows - x factor, masked singer and all that bollocks.

All the inane ego massaging by the judges, the endlessly dragging out of every event and the fakeness gets on my tits.

tttigress · 17/10/2021 14:40

I can see why it gives people a nostalgic feeling of autumn Saturday nights and the run up to Christmas, but for gaud sake - a one hour show would do the job!! They have definitely over extended what was (to some) a good thing, making it now a bad thing!!

MalagaNights · 17/10/2021 14:47

Yes an hour would be good! 7-8pm, then there'd be time for a film too!

I do think it would work with having members of the general public on it too. Even the celebs I don't know ( which is the majority) I get to know what I think and feel about them, and I think we would do the same with nobodies.
Like bake off.

Redcrayons · 17/10/2021 15:35

I hardly ever know many of the celebs, I only watch EE, don’t watch much Television, not interested in Towie/Made in Chelsea, DCs too old for Cbeebies, don’t watch telly during the day and I’m too old for all that YT influencer stuff. Doesn’t spoil my enjoyment of it at all.

Who are the ‘they’re all z list’ people expecting? Tom Cruise, the Home Secretary, kate Middleton?

I will concede that the first month is like an endurance event. They could easily chop a good 45 minutes out.

MalagaNights · 17/10/2021 15:37

Wouldn't it be amazing if Kate Middleton was on it Grin!

QueenofKattegat · 17/10/2021 15:41

YANBU it's utter shite. "Celebrities" are the kids of TV chefs? The inane whoops and tedious standing ovations from the crowd after the most mediocre 'dance'. It's so false and shite.

the80sweregreat · 17/10/2021 16:04

It is dragged out now.
I think that dropping the Sunday night show and the dance off would help.
Slim it down a bit.

luckylavender · 17/10/2021 16:06

Each to his own. I think this year is good.

JovialNickname · 17/10/2021 16:11

I went to see Ed Byrne's new stand up show recently (it's excellent by the way and I highly recommend it if you want a good night out!) and he says in it that he recently said that he doesn't care about Strictly Come Dancing. Not that he hates it; not that he has anything against it; just that he doesn't care. He says the tide of hate he's had from voicing that was like nothing else Grin

the80sweregreat · 17/10/2021 16:18

The only judge I would want to impress would be Craig! Will never happen though as I've two left feet and not famous.

derxa · 17/10/2021 16:23

@gardeninggirl68

theres no actual dancing on it.....thats the issue

in the ballroom dancing world its laughed at. the professional dancers are not thanked for this comical show

Farmers feel the same about Countryfile - complete shite
Maireas · 17/10/2021 16:26

I sometimes read the Guardian blog on Strictly. The comments section is full of snide remarks, mostly quoting "bread and circuses" (sometimes even in Latin Hmm). It's not for everyone, but there's clearly an audience.

the80sweregreat · 17/10/2021 16:27

Country file is a disgrace , just a lifestyle programme now.
At least Clarkson's farm showed what it's really like to run a farm!
Strictly will run out of steam eventually though ; it'll be like the X factor and people will just not watch it anymore or the lack of any ' big names ' will be its downfall ( or Claudia will leave !)
I like Anton as the new judge though , at least he is sensible ( and I didn't think he would be )
