To think Strictly is just a bit....shit?!

I know the majority will disagree with me but .....

I never watch it, but tonight thought I’d put it on. Just watched the last 40 mins of it and am finding it one big cringe/ cheese/ bore fest.

I have no idea who any of the ‘celebs’ are, I’ve thought all the dances have been a bit meh. The judges all seem to be clamouring over one another for attention.

I’m a big fan of dancing on ice and always watch that, but I guess I like that because of the danger element, just makes it a bit more exciting.

I’m just bored watching this and struggling with all the gushy cheesiness.

Am I the only one who doesn’t get the massive hype around it?

I'm watching it for the first time this year as we know one of the slebs involved. It's just a bit of light froth isn't it? A bit like panto? I was never under the illusion it was going to be deep and meaningful.

MyCatEatsPrawnCrackers · 17/10/2021 10:07

I enjoy it but dislike how they wheel in the nans and cute toddlers and refer to dead relatives to get the sympathy vote.

FangsForTheMemory · 17/10/2021 10:12

I would forgive it anything if it weren't 90% yacking and 10% dancing.

ichundich · 17/10/2021 10:13

Yes, very, very boring. But the worst thing about it is the BBC News reporting who won / lost for the next couple of days and my MIL droning on about it and asking what we think of so-and-so's performance.

aSofaNearYou · 17/10/2021 10:14

Well YANBU as each to their own but laying out all the factors including the one's you've mentioned, Dancing on Ice is definitely shitter.

this^^ I really detest Dancing on Ice.
Onlinedilema · 17/10/2021 10:33

You have to accept it for what it is, a popularity contest.
I've stopped caring about who wins, very, very rarely does the best dancer win. Same as BGT or the X factor.
It's a popularity contest.
Reminds me of when I was at school and "the best/teachers favourites" would be asked to pick their sports teams.
I was always ok as although I wasn't outstanding at any sport, I had friends and got along with "The favourites" who were picking so I was never one of the last 2 kids who the captain's made no bones about "Well if I have to have one of them in the team at a push I'll take X I suppose."
Must have been dreadful for the last 2 kids who were always the last 2 kids chosen and unsurprisingly never exceeded at sport.
Anyhow, I now vote for who I like the same as it appears virtually every one else does.
I've seen posts on here from people saying they will not vote for X not matter how good they are as the poster hasn't warmed to them.

Onlinedilema · 17/10/2021 10:36

Dancing on Ice used to be good, a long time ago when Jason was a judge and Jane and Chris presented it (or mind if did I think).
I can't watch Tits out gormless Wiloughby and smug liar Schofield. I don't watch anything with those 2 in it.

Onlinedilema · 17/10/2021 10:37

Kind of not mind of.

And when Robin Cousins was head judge.
lollipoprainbow · 17/10/2021 10:44

I love it but the celebrities aren't what they used to be, years ago there were bigger names nowadays it's cbbc presenters and influencers who no one has ever hear of.

thereisonlyoneofme · 17/10/2021 11:09

I think its sadly gone past its sell by date, got formulaic and tired. Cant stand the two presenters they are truly dreadful.and I also record and fast forward the chat bits. Used to love the repartee between Craig, Bruno and Len.Love the costumes and it does cheer me up on dark winter nights. No effing and blinding too which is a plus.

LagunaBubbles · 17/10/2021 11:19

Strictly is a big bit shit and it just shows how shit our lives are when people look forward to it all day

No it shows you how judgemental sone people can be about what others watch on TV.

DarlingFell · 17/10/2021 11:19

It’s utter shite

DarlingFell · 17/10/2021 11:20

As is dancing on ice

Smileyaxolotl1 · 17/10/2021 11:31

Never understood why people are so desperate to display their complete ignorance and lack of general knowledge on these threads. I can only assume you think it makes you look intellectual. It doesn’t, it makes you look insular, ill informed and ignorant.

SickAndTiredAgain · 17/10/2021 12:22

I always think the people who say they’ve never heard of any of the celebs seem to almost wear it with a pride which I don’t understand. Never having heard of any of the celebs doesn’t make you superior, not knowing who Adam Peaty is doesn’t make him less of a massive success (three time Olympic champion, three time commonwealth champion and eight time world champion, as well as 14 time world record breaker), it makes it seem like you don’t really have an awareness of general (pretty recent) sporting news. Which is fine, but it’s a reflection on you and your views/interests, not on his success or fame.
I can never understood being superior over, or proud, of not knowing something. I can understand not caring about swimming, I just can’t understand a snotty “well I’ve never heard of him” reaction.

the80sweregreat · 17/10/2021 12:33

I wasn't being ' superior ' when I said that there were a few celebs I didn't know.
I don't watch children's tv , so a few I really didn't know that well although I have heard of Tilly Ramsey's dad of course !
I'm not a big sport watcher either and I don't watch soaps , only Eastenders. So many of these people i don't know who they are!
It doesn't stop me enjoying the show though.

Maireas · 17/10/2021 12:38

Bloody hell, it's only a telly programme.
Live and let live.
I can't understand why people watch all those dreadful, miserable police procedurals with folks being found in canals etc.
It's a bit of harmless fun.

Maireas · 17/10/2021 12:39

Strictly, not corpses in canals Confused

Maireas · 17/10/2021 12:44

Anyway. Contextually, when I was a teenager Saturday night viewing was the Black and White Minstrel Show. Oh yes.
It warms my heart that I can now watch prime time Saturday night telly which features gay couples dancing, various ethnic groups judged not as lesser beings, and people with disabilities participating and having fun.
I'm glad we've come this far.

Journeyofthedragons · 17/10/2021 12:58

Bread and circuses.
LINABE · 17/10/2021 13:13

@1forAll74

I think the show is running out of people with bigger personalities to dance now, those who added a bit of the fun factor to the show, such as Ann Widdicome John Sargeant, Russell Grant etc. Each year now, there are some people you may not have heard of. And of course, some of the humour has gone out of the show, since Bruce Forsyth left, and then passed away.
Absolutely this.

Black and white minstrels was before my time, but couldn't agree more with this.

Also I hadn't heard of the majority of the celebs this year but I don't care, I still love it. I might find I like some of the celebs I didn't know and watch whatever else they've starred in
