To think Strictly is just a bit....shit?!

I know the majority will disagree with me but .....

I never watch it, but tonight thought I’d put it on. Just watched the last 40 mins of it and am finding it one big cringe/ cheese/ bore fest.

I have no idea who any of the ‘celebs’ are, I’ve thought all the dances have been a bit meh. The judges all seem to be clamouring over one another for attention.

I’m a big fan of dancing on ice and always watch that, but I guess I like that because of the danger element, just makes it a bit more exciting.

I’m just bored watching this and struggling with all the gushy cheesiness.

Am I the only one who doesn’t get the massive hype around it?

I know it would bore me to death so I've never watched it. I can't imagine wanting to watch (what appears to be, judging by trailers and bits of discussions I've seen) a combination of the worst aspects of Saturday night telly — sparkly tackiness, talent show format, low-grade celebrities, overplayed emotional journeys, contrived drama, and mediocre dancing. But then, I've just spent what was to me a very enjoyable 25 minutes watching a computer program playing a 32-year-old video game, with a voiceover detailing the interesting glitches that happen when the game goes on longer than any human could play, which I suspect would constitute the most excruciating kind of boredom for many, many people, who wouldn't be able to imagine what I get out of it.

Watch what interests you.

ClumpingBambooIsALie · 16/10/2021 21:51

My point is that it's fine to enjoy watching things that other people might think are boring. And fine to think that things other people enjoy are boring. I'm sure people who enjoy Strictly realise as much as I do that it's tacky and overblown and full of near-nobodies and enjoy it anyway, just as I realise that the Tetris video I just watched was repetitive and nerdy and not very polished.

CiaoForDiNiaoSaur · 16/10/2021 21:58
@CiaoForDiNiaoSaur yes i'm also from the Ballroom dancing world....its unrecognisable.
I wonder if knowing what the dances should look like makes a difference. My non dancer friends would always say "Oh wasn't X's dance amazing?" And I'd be all "whaaaaaat. It was rubbish! Where were the heel leads. There was no rise and fall. Their arms were just ugh." And my friends would tell me I was chatting shit Grin

HintofVintagePink · 16/10/2021 21:59

Looked to me like Katya’s partner was puckering up to move in for a kiss at the end of their tango. Think he may have forgotten they weren’t in the studio!

Obsidiansphere · 16/10/2021 22:02

Yanbu…it’s shite!

Shallwegoforawalk · 16/10/2021 22:02

Even if you barely watch tv, you surely must know Adam Peaty - he's a world class athlete, world record holder broke his own record many times, several Olympic medals, many many other titles, without doubt the finest swimmer the U.K. has EVER produced? And also has quite the most gorgeous bottom #teampeachy

MrsFezziwig · 16/10/2021 22:11

Mind you it haven't watched it properly for a few years because there was too much talking and not enough dancing!

That’s why I record it and watch later. Like watching the actual dances (and the ensemble professional dances are generally fantastic, don’t give a shit if they contravene all the rules of Grade 8 ballroom dancing or whatever) but can’t do with the incessant chirruping so I fast forward.

I can get through the results show in about 10 minutes!

MyPatronusIsACat · 16/10/2021 22:13

I agree @Chocolateflapjack01 I never watched it for the first few years, but watched it in 2018, 2019, and 2020, and thought it was OK. But for some reason, I am really bored with it this year. DH feels the same. We haven't watched this weeks OR last weeks, and won't return to it again this year. It's a bit of a drag, the results show is an hour, but could be 20 minutes, and I think it's had its day.

Ditto The Apprentice and Hells Kitchen and Britains Got Talent. Bored with them too. And the last time I watched X Factor was when Little Mix won. I still enjoy Bake Off though!

Yep I agree. It's so boring. Full of Z list celebrities and hype. Such a shame.
Immaculatemisconception · 16/10/2021 22:19

I watch it because it’s very easy viewing, it doesn’t stress or depress me.

Glittertwins · 16/10/2021 22:22

I tried to watch it over the years and not even Adam Peaty can persuade me or the DCs to watch it despite him being God like in their eyes. Absolutely great guy but no to SCD here.

toconclude · 16/10/2021 22:25

You are not alone. Never appealed to me in the least.

Doggydoodah123 · 16/10/2021 22:41

I agree and I'm a dancer myself. I've tried to get in to it but I just find it cheesy and boring.

Bloodypunkrockers · 16/10/2021 22:45

@Classica

I've voted YABU

Not for disliking Strictly, I'm not a fan either. But for saying 'Am I the only one who doesn’t get the massive hype around it?'. People saying 'am I the only person who doesn't like -insert name of something totally mainstream- is my pet peeve.

Loads of people hate Strictly. Just like loads of people hate Coldplay, or Ant and Dec, or tea, or football.

God yes

Am I the only one who.....something really commonplace

No, you're not some special, discerning genius. You're not the only one. Get over yourself

Thecurliestwurly · 16/10/2021 22:50

I used to hate it and never really got it, but then I didn't have kids and had a social life back then. Now that I have kids and no social life I look forward to it on a Saturday with a few drinks.

The format is getting tiresome though. They need to do something different with it. There are worse celebrity reality TV shows. I really don't get I'm a Celeb or DOI at all. Can't stand it.

gardeninggirl68 · 16/10/2021 22:51

theres no actual dancing on it.....thats the issue

in the ballroom dancing world its laughed at. the professional dancers are not thanked for this comical show

bluegreygreen · 16/10/2021 22:52

Haven't watched it for a few years - used to enjoy it when all the couples did the same one or two dances. I know nothing about dancing but by the end of a show had a vague idea what the main features of each dance were.

SickAndTiredAgain · 16/10/2021 23:03

As I said upthread, I’m not really a fan, but generally speaking I find it so annoying when professionals (in any area) get snooty about how their profession is shown on tv, whether it’s drama or a reality show like this.
It’s a tv show! It’s for entertainment. It’s resemblance to actual ballroom dancing is presumably not related to its success.

Cactus1982 · 16/10/2021 23:08

You lost any credibility when you said that you were a big fan of Dancing On Ice….

CiaoForDiNiaoSaur · 16/10/2021 23:09

I didn't realise they'd stopped that. It made sense because you can compare w waltz to a waltz, even as a non dancer. Not so easy to compare a foxtrot to a jive. Personally I'd rather watch a bad jive than a good foxtrot.
TheCategoryIs · 16/10/2021 23:12

Tonight’s episode was quite lacklustre. I normally enjoy it much more.

Maskless · 16/10/2021 23:17

I started watching it again this season after not watching for 2 or 3 years.

I literally have never heard of any of the "celebs".

The format has changed over the years, adding loads of padding, making it far more cheesy, and too self-congratulatory.

Has anyone ever counted the number of minutes of dancing shown per episode? It must be about 5% of the programme!

gardeninggirl68 · 16/10/2021 23:19

the actual 'dancing' within the dancing is even less!

KateofGhent · 16/10/2021 23:21

I would like Strictly if the programme was just about the DANCING, but it is not. Just a vehicle for the 2 presenters ( I haven't named them, Mumsnet !) to preen, gurn, and generally look like silly teenagers. Please BBC, just show us the dances, and the judges' marks, not the asides and wisecracks.

ASeriesOfTubes · 16/10/2021 23:29

Not the least bit interested in the show because I don't get the point of dancing, but the name of it has always bothered me - and I'm old enough to realise it's a mashup of "Strictly Ballroom" and "Come Dancing". "Strictly Come Dancing", though? What sense does that even make?
