AIBU to be disappointed in this cake…

I picked up dds cake today and it was not what I expected.

Would you be happy with this cake? I’ve attached two pics below, one was the pic I sent to the cake maker of what I wanted (a family dog) and the other picture is of the cake.

Also his head is made of Rice Krispies as apparently heads are hard to do. I wasn’t aware that it wouldn’t be all sponge.

It’s from a proper cake shop, not someone who does it as a hobby.

What do you all think?

mental spending €110 on a 9 year olds birthday cake though i agree with others in that respect

BornIn78 · 15/10/2021 15:16

It’s a bloody good effort. I think it’s fine and so is the price.

ouchmyfeet · 15/10/2021 15:16

I can't believe anyone pays £110 for cake Hmm

I think it's lovely though OP

GlowInThePark · 15/10/2021 15:16

@PineappleTart

Were you expecting something like this?
Jesus Christ that's creepy! Confused
PinkWaferBiscuit · 15/10/2021 15:16

That cake would have been a fuck ton more than £100. It would have taken days to sculpt.
Gonnagetgoing · 15/10/2021 15:16

It looks great and I'm wondering exactly what you were expecting (I used to make, bake and ice elaborate designs when younger).

Lulu2021 · 15/10/2021 15:16

@PineappleTart

Were you expecting something like this?

Oh wow! This is incredible

mountbattenbergcake · 15/10/2021 15:17

@HerRoyalWitchyness

Basically the only cake bit is the slab? So if you cut through the dog the rice crispiest would fall part?

Only the head is rice krispies. The body is sponge. And the head will be like rice krispie squares, held together in shape with melted marshmallow. So no it won't fall apart. It's just easier to mould rice krispies into a head shape than to carve a cake into a head shape.

Ah ok. Bit better I suppose.

Although they should have been upfront with OP that the head would be crispies.

LouLou198 · 15/10/2021 15:18

@Aquamarine1029

It's adorable. What on earth did you want? A cake that looks like a taxidermied dog?
Sorry OP but after a difficult few weeks this comment really made me laugh. I think it's fine. As previously said using Rice Krispies to sculpt is common. £110 is an extortionate amount to spend on cake though, I hope he tastes good!!
AWaspOnAWindowReturns · 15/10/2021 15:18

@TellySavalashairbrush

TBH I don't think it's the best. Can I ask how much did you pay for it? I think anymore than £25 and I would have been disappointed.
Oh my, really? When did you last buy a cake that wasn't from a supermarket - I'm guessing it was a good while ago!
Notwhatiimagined · 15/10/2021 15:18

It’s not the price I’m querying, it’s more so if the dog looks like the photo and if you gave that photo to a cake maker would you expect that outcome?

OP posts:
Princesspickle777 · 15/10/2021 15:18

There’s nothing wrong with it Hmm. It’s cute and it resembles the dog in the other picture, I’m not sure what you were expecting a cake dog to look like.

Rainbowheart1 · 15/10/2021 15:18

I think it’s great, it was never actually going to look physically like the dog, it’s a cake.

Cakes are expensive to make and take hours. £110 seems reasonable where I am (Essex)

GlowInThePark · 15/10/2021 15:18

How many servings is it? Basic round cakes for 12 people cost around £35 at bakeries, so yeah I'd definitely expect something like that to be more than £100. & twice that for something more realistic.

Granllanog · 15/10/2021 15:18

That is a great cake, they have met the brief. I think you had unrealistic expectations.
Standard to use puffed rice for the head, the cake maker can't defy gravity!

HerRoyalWitchyness · 15/10/2021 15:18

You'd have paid hundreds for that

£25 would just about cover ingredients of a cake like this
EdenFlower · 15/10/2021 15:19

I think your cake is cute.

The one @PineappleTart posted is horrible!!!

loopylindi · 15/10/2021 15:19

As an ex cake decorator I think that's pretty damn good. It was much better than I was expecting from your post. The price would have reflected the amount of time taken to achieve the 'look'. Your daughter will love it - and remember children have different perceptions and expectations. She won't know what kind of cake she is getting!

That's pretty unreasonable. A cake like that would cost much, much more.
Luckytattie · 15/10/2021 15:19

Lol you weren't going to get a photo copy cake of a dog...

AWaspOnAWindowReturns · 15/10/2021 15:19

@Aroundtheworldin80moves

Several hours work at £10 per hour... £50 Ingredients... £30 (icing sugar, butter etc add up!) Utilities, rent etc Insurance Food certificates

Not a lot of profit in cake making...

I wish more people understood this @Aroundtheworldin80moves
SockFluffInTheBath · 15/10/2021 15:19

I had no idea they cost so much, but it makes sense. I think it’s cute in a cartoony way. If your DD likes it then that’s all that really matters. Happy birthday to her.

If she was charging me £110 I would be bloody delighted with the outcome, yes.
