AIBU to be disappointed in this cake…

I picked up dds cake today and it was not what I expected.

Would you be happy with this cake? I’ve attached two pics below, one was the pic I sent to the cake maker of what I wanted (a family dog) and the other picture is of the cake.

Also his head is made of Rice Krispies as apparently heads are hard to do. I wasn’t aware that it wouldn’t be all sponge.

It’s from a proper cake shop, not someone who does it as a hobby.

What do you all think?

It looks like a home baker effort rather than a professional cake maker IMO, I think it's the piping.

I had a Winnie the Pooh made in a similar style to this by a colleague (who was a keen cake maker) for my DS's birthday when he was young, that was £20 but a number of years ago, probably more like £40-50 now. A long way off £110!

AryaStarkWolf · 15/10/2021 15:28

@catzfur

I would expect it to look more like this cake unless I’d asked for a cartoon version which I would class yours as.
I prefer the cake in the OP tbh
Henio · 15/10/2021 15:28
@Henio £25 for ingredients. Mixing, cooking, shaping, modelling - so that's all labour costs and fuel. Then there's the profit margin. Get real.

I made wedding cakes with realistic modelled flowers on and would take over 150hrs to make - so since I wasn't prepared to work for peanuts I only did commissions for folk who appreciated that
Think you got me mixed up with who I replying too, I used to do it for a living so I know how expensive they need to be

Whaddado · 15/10/2021 15:28

People who think £110 for that cake is too much are mad. Unless you’d seen previous examples of the baker’s work that were more lifelike (and would have cost considerably more than £110) then yes, YABU.

SpeckledlyHen · 15/10/2021 15:28

I make cakes as a bit of a hobby and all I can say is that's really quite good and yes it is totally normal to use rice crispies and marshmallow mix for modelling difficult parts. The sponge is usually just the main "body" of a cake.

Disfordarkchocolate · 15/10/2021 15:28

To me it's a good representation of a dog, just not your dog.

yoyo1234 · 15/10/2021 15:29

I like catzfur image as well.

These cakes are amazing works of art and cost a lot more than£110.

VienneseWhirligig · 15/10/2021 15:29

I think it's sweet, he has a nice expression. I use rice crispy squares for shaping when baking, they are much more malleable than cake and you can get a great shape.

girlmom21 · 15/10/2021 15:30

I think if they were planning a cartoon version they should've managed your expectations.

I do think £110 is steep for a cake - I'd have expected around £60.

The quality is something I'd expect from a hobby baker, not a professional.

RedCarsGoFaster · 15/10/2021 15:31

OP - what did you actually ask for? What other work have you seen of this company? Did you not discuss expectations?

AryaStarkWolf · 15/10/2021 15:31

I don't think it's too much for the cake, I just wouldn't personally spend that much on a young childs birthday cake but each to their own
AnotherName456 · 15/10/2021 15:31

@TellySavalashairbrush

TBH I don't think it's the best. Can I ask how much did you pay for it? I think anymore than £25 and I would have been disappointed.
£25?? That's ridiculously cheap. Think of all the time and effort that has gone into it, plus the price of the ingredients. People need to earn a living ffs
Derbee · 15/10/2021 15:31

I’d be disappointed, because I’d expect it to look more like the actual dog. In itself, it’s not a bad cake, but it’s not what I’d be expecting after sending a photo of the actual dog.

Grenlei · 15/10/2021 15:31

@Twinkle19

I would of expected it to be all proper icing not just butter cream piped on. Proper icing would of looked more realistic and for the price thats what u should of got.
Yes, that would be my view - proper icing seems more professional. For someone who is baking as a hobby (like my colleague I mentioned) the piped buttercream is fine, but then you're charging hobby prices!
Yaya26 · 15/10/2021 15:31

It's lovely. I think most 9 year olds would love a cake like that. How real did you expect it to be?

Mynameismargot · 15/10/2021 15:32

Did you see photos of previous dog cakes that they had done? I wouldn't have committed over 100quid without having some idea of what to expect.

JapanJetplane · 15/10/2021 15:32

It’s a cute cake.

The picture of your dog is irrelevant - what would be more useful would be pictures of other cakes by the baker. If he/she was promising a totally realistic cake sculpture I see why you’re annoyed. But if the cake you got is similar to other cakes they’ve made, you can’t really complain.

Bookworm20 · 15/10/2021 15:33

I think its cute.

However, I can't yet get past spending £110 on a 9 year olds birthday cake!!

me4real · 15/10/2021 15:34

I think it's fun, but not £110 levels of fun. :)

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 15/10/2021 15:35

I think it’s really good!

Bluntness100 · 15/10/2021 15:36

Honestly op the baker has done you a favour, a friend of mines husband got her a cake like her dog and it was very realistic, th cutting of it was actually a bit unpleasant and no one really wanted to eat it. It cost about three times whay you paid though

Personally a cute version is much less traumatic for everyone.

Flufferty · 15/10/2021 15:36

It's lovely

QueenBee52 · 15/10/2021 15:36
