AIBU?

AIBU to be disappointed in this cake…

I picked up dds cake today and it was not what I expected.

Would you be happy with this cake? I’ve attached two pics below, one was the pic I sent to the cake maker of what I wanted (a family dog) and the other picture is of the cake.

Also his head is made of Rice Krispies as apparently heads are hard to do. I wasn’t aware that it wouldn’t be all sponge.

It’s from a proper cake shop, not someone who does it as a hobby.

What do you all think?

@Siriisatwat

For £110, I’d be expecting it to bark and shit gold bricks.

😂

£110 for a childs birthday cake!?
Its a lovely cake but not £110 lovely Confused

It's okay but I wouldn't pay £110 for it.

Either the maker should have been clearer or out their capabilities or you should have been clearer about your expectations. Sculpted lifelike cakes are days of work and would cost hundreds.

It is a perfectly nice cake for a 9yos birthday, if overpriced.

I think it is definitely worth 110, bespoke cake with large model of a dog, it also looks great.

I think a lot of posters questioning the price are underestimating just how much a cake from a professional baker should cost.

And alot of people baulk at bespoke cake prices, but even a basic round cake can be 50-60 or more, that is why I agree that the price you were charged is fine.

I see now it says on the cake how old your DD is oooops!

It's cute, but looks more like something you'd pick up in a supermarket (sorry 🙈)

For over £100 I'd be a bit gutted tbh.

It looks fab to me OP

@PineappleTart- that looks real, I’m not sure I could bring myself to eat it Grin

@MaybeAMoaner

Depends how much you paid. I’d say up to £50 it’s worth it.
More than that then it better taste amazing.
It is good though.

The ingredients alone would be a huge chunk of your £50. Do you think people's time should be free?

Several hours work at £10 per hour... £50
Ingredients... £30 (icing sugar, butter etc add up!)
Utilities, rent etc
Insurance
Food certificates

Not a lot of profit in cake making...

Hmm, for £110 I would have expected the dog to be sponge too.

Basically the only cake bit is the slab? So if you cut through the dog the rice crispiest would fall part?

I think it looks great. I can’t believe some posters think it should be £50 or less!

Yep. £25 is more like a 6” round plain buttercream icing cake with no decoration. People are barking.

It looks nice but it isn't what I'd expect given the photo you sent. It's a random cute cartoon dog, not your dog.

The body of teh dog is sponge, it's just the head that is made of rice crispies which is quite normal in a sculptured cake.

I would have estimated £60-80. £110 seems very steep.

I think it looks like a dog yes but not THAT dog!! And I certainly don't think it's worth £110!! Sorry

@TellySavalashairbrush

TBH I don't think it's the best. Can I ask how much did you pay for it? I think anymore than £25 and I would have been disappointed.

You can barely get a standard cake from a baker for that though. £25 isn't realistic.

It's fine for £110, OP.
There was this show of bakers in the UK on Netflix a while back, might still be there, and one of them made quite realistic looking animal cakes. They would have set you back that money many times over though.

Only the head is rice krispies. The body is sponge. And the head will be like rice krispie squares, held together in shape with melted marshmallow. So no it won't fall apart. It's just easier to mould rice krispies into a head shape than to carve a cake into a head shape.

Cute cartoon version. You wouldn't really want to eat a realistic replica of such a lovely pet.

I don't think that's a bad price at all, cakes can cost a fortune to make, especially when you factor in labour costs. I think the art skills are a bit lacking but it doesn't look bad at all. How big is the cake? I hope your DD loves it!
