I picked up dds cake today and it was not what I expected.

Would you be happy with this cake? I’ve attached two pics below, one was the pic I sent to the cake maker of what I wanted (a family dog) and the other picture is of the cake.

Also his head is made of Rice Krispies as apparently heads are hard to do. I wasn’t aware that it wouldn’t be all sponge.

It’s from a proper cake shop, not someone who does it as a hobby.

What do you all think?

It looks good but £110 seems an awful lot and I’m in London where we get ripped off for everything!

whenwillthemadnessend · 16/10/2021 18:47

£110!!!! For a cake

Shocking piss take. Get a cake from Asda

whenwillthemadnessend · 16/10/2021 18:47

Tho the design is fine 😂

knittingaddict · 16/10/2021 18:50

@Notwhatiimagined

No!!! The dinosaur head was £150, the same person who did that dinosaur wanted £350 for the dog
Doesn't that tell you something? To do the dog as a realistic portrait would be £350. You paid £110 and got £110 worth of dog cake. It was never going to be as good as the dinosaur one. You basically got what you paid for.

I think the problem may be all these cake making programs on the tv. Those cakes are amazing, but cost many hundreds of pounds and sometimes thousands. You have to be realistic about what makers can do for a certain price.

Sorry I may have missed it, but what examples did the person who did the dog cake have for you to look at? Were they considerably better than this one?

@SameToo

£110 for a cake??? Do you shit money 😂 how old is your DD? She might cry when you slice the family pet up.
This ⬆️ 😂

@Grilledaubergines

I’m so glad my customers appreciate my expenses, overheads and salary in doing their cakes because they choose not to do it themselves and want a professional cake.

How people spent their money is absolutely their choice. I wouldn’t spend money on a painter & decorator at £200 per day because I can do it myself, but I don’t call others out in it.

Or pay a hairdresser £150 to apply a £10 tube of hair dye and expect them to charge me £10 for their skills and time applying it.

The hairdresser I paid £80 to recently to do my hair was at my house for 2 hours, used a bit of shampoo and some bleach. I charge less for a 6" drip cake which costs more in ingredients abd takes more time. Do people ask the hairdresser to charge the cost of a Garnier home dye kit ? No.

"£110 fir a bit of cake ? That's far too expensive". No problem, crack on and model a beach hut yourself.

TashaG · 16/10/2021 18:51

@Grilledaubergines

£25!!!! God it cost more in ingredients and materials to make it, let alone the hourly rate of pay!

Some people ought to stick with supermarket cakes as they’ve little understanding of the work and time involved.

This!
StormyCornishSeas · 16/10/2021 18:55

Awwww think it's very cute

It's much better than something I would do myself. Would I fork out £110 for it no. But then it could have been made by Mary Berry and look utterly fab and still baulk at paying £110 for it

thelonghaul · 16/10/2021 18:57

Are you having a laugh?!! Did you seriously pay £110 for a birthday cake for a 9 year old?!!!! Yes, YUBVU for being so ridiculous.
That aside, looks ok. Sure it's not £110 worth but, as previous posters have said, it's a cake not a sculpture. Perhaps you should have done more investigation into what you were paying for. Or just buy a caterpillar cake and be done will it.
Also, why would you want to cut up and eat the family dog?

Pinklilly123 · 16/10/2021 18:58

I think it's lovely. I think people underestimate how much time goes into making cakes. Some saying it's worth around 50 quid but a cake like this to bake, ice etc probably took hours of work. Then there's the cost of ingredients. As someone who's made cakes in the past as a hobby Baker and had numerous friends and family ask me to make them for free?! Or for the cost of ingredients alone... Or offering 25 quid for a massive cake with loads of detail (barely covers ingredients for some cakes), I find it sad that people don't appreciate the work that goes into it. The time, the patience and the effort of grafting for hours for nothing. Needless to say I gave up when everyone started taking advantage but sadly its because people just don't understand how much time goes into it. The Baker probably worked really hard on this. I think it's lovely. Also alot of bakers use rice crispies for detailed bits as it's hard to sculpt cake although it is possible... Its even more time consuming

Do most people buy supermarket cakes for their children?
I’ve never had a cake as cheap as £110? Why are people so shocked?

YearsSinceISawYou · 16/10/2021 18:59

OP.

Did you get 30 slices out of just the body? That's nearly £4 a slice, which does seem quite a lot!

Peaflock · 16/10/2021 19:00

It's cute, but aside from the colour it's fairly generic dog like, better off buying one from a supermarket especially as you say it didn't taste great either. I think like anything some people are more talented than others, if it tasted amazing I don't think it'd be too bad, but the look not being what you thought it would and the taste being bad is not good. Can't get over the other wanting £350!

Daisymaybe60 · 16/10/2021 19:00

I think it’s a cute cake, but it seems a bit over the top on price and has fallen down on its main job as a cake - to taste good.

I usually make my DGSs’ birthday cakes, and they’ve challenged me over the years - Night Garden scene, Star Wars, Tracy Island. I always get people telling me I could do it professionally, but it’s obvious what they’re hinting at is me spending many hours moulding scenes and characters and selling it to them for the cost of ingredients, if that. If you want a cheap cake, there are plenty at the supermarket, and they’re great for the price. But if you want top quality ingredients and someone’s time, you’ve to be prepared to pay.

£110 for a stale taste and a lot of Rice Krispies padding though - no, that’s not a fair price.

Because £110 is a massive amount of money to spend on a cake for a lot of people.

Every parent I’ve met through having 3 children has either bought supermarket cakes, lovingly knocked one up themselves or had one made but for a lot cheaper. I’ve done all three in my time.

liveforsummer · 16/10/2021 19:03

I think it's cute. Not sure how it could look more like your dog tbh without being like the sculpted one that would have needed a specialist cake sculptor and significantly more money

Jesus wept. £110 is more than most people's weekly food budget that's why.
tigerinyourtank · 16/10/2021 19:07

I like it, but it looks homemade and I think most people could do something similar at home.

I am no baker but I've made cakes of my DD's guinea pig, paddington bear, Mickey Mouse etc. Didn't take that long and didn't cost very much.

It's gone over my head why you think children need £100+ cakes purely because the candles get blown out and then they get chopped up. I don't get it.

Queenbee77 · 16/10/2021 19:08

I would have put a photo on a cake instead og paying so much for this. Not worth that much. Cute but could be any dog.

PeachyPeachTrees · 16/10/2021 19:16

I really like this cake. I prefer it to be cute and a bit cartoon like as it's going to be cut open with a knife.
The price does seem a bit expensive.
I would prefer a delicious sponge cake decorated like this than an amazing sculpted one that's on a rice Krispie base that I'm not going to want to eat.

DockOTheBay · 16/10/2021 19:16

@Borntofun

Robbed. I’m not a professional cake maker, made these for friends £30
Well the key thing here is you're not a professional. The baker here would need to cover her costs and labour plus, ideally, make a profit because she is a professional.
