AIBU to be disappointed in this cake…

I picked up dds cake today and it was not what I expected.

Would you be happy with this cake? I’ve attached two pics below, one was the pic I sent to the cake maker of what I wanted (a family dog) and the other picture is of the cake.

Also his head is made of Rice Krispies as apparently heads are hard to do. I wasn’t aware that it wouldn’t be all sponge.

It’s from a proper cake shop, not someone who does it as a hobby.

What do you all think?

I’m so glad my customers appreciate my expenses, overheads and salary in doing their cakes because they choose not to do it themselves and want a professional cake.

How people spent their money is absolutely their choice. I wouldn’t spend money on a painter & decorator at £200 per day because I can do it myself, but I don’t call others out in it.

My3dahliasarebloominlovely · 16/10/2021 18:14

@DaxtheDestroyer

The head out of Rice Krispies is standard for modelled cakes.

I think it's very cute! It's clearly not a realistic style, rather more cartoony, but it looks a good job and is recognisable as your dog.
The only thing I'd have a problem with is if you were missold. So do they have photos of realistic style cakes that you were expecting?

Exactly!
Grilledaubergines · 16/10/2021 18:14

@sweatyhotlady

I used to make cakes and I undercharged. However I think £110 is extortionate. Rice Krispie head is quite standard. The main thing is how many servings it is. As long as it covers the number of servings you requested with the cake section I think it's fine.
Exactly! Doesn’t matter if the cake is made from whatever, as long as the edible part is sufficient for servings needed.
tommyhoundmum · 16/10/2021 18:15

I think it's OK for the money and a reasonable likeness

CambsAlways · 16/10/2021 18:16

Borntofun they are beautiful I’d be charging 50 for those

Murdoch1949 · 16/10/2021 18:16

Did you view photos of previous dogs the baker had made, to get an idea of the realism they achieved? Although £110 does seem expensive, there is a lot of work plus ingredients. As others have stated, rice krispies are standard moulding material for sculpting parts of cakes. My main criticism is you being willing to pay this amount for a young child's birthday cake, it's excessive and wasteful, no matter that you can afford it. What will you be shelling out for her 18th!

Hyacinth88 · 16/10/2021 18:18

Love it cuter than the real thing

budgiegirl · 16/10/2021 18:18

I think it looks fine and I can't imagine what a much better one would look like - but I've had two amazing cakes recently and they were £30 and £40. £110 is outrageous

£110 is really not outrageous for a handmade, shaped cake to serve 30 people. Paying only £30 for a bespoke cake, however, is outrageous. You cake maker must have made almost no profit at all.

ALongHardWinter · 16/10/2021 18:18

I think it's gorgeous!

Anabella23 · 16/10/2021 18:20

cakes like this are hard to do, should have asked how they would do it , as you should with any modelling, its not an issue providing its edible, i think it is rather good cake and defo looks like you breed of dog. Defo uabu 100%

TertiusLydgate · 16/10/2021 18:20

Adorable! It's a cake for a child, not a museum piece.

Jaem23 · 16/10/2021 18:21

I had this cake bought for me by my brother last year! It was a similar price to yours but we do live in the South West! The head was also made of rice crispies due to being able to use for sculpting!

I think your cake is lovely, did you send them a style you wanted the cake to be made in?

AIBU to be disappointed in this cake…
Siriisatwat · 16/10/2021 18:25

@Jaem23 now that is a fantastic cake!

Ilovesandwiches · 16/10/2021 18:26

So the majority
Of the cake wasn’t actually cake? I can see why you’re disappointed.

Grilledaubergines · 16/10/2021 18:29

@Ilovesandwiches

So the majority Of the cake wasn’t actually cake? I can see why you’re disappointed.
But it would depending on how many servings OP for. It wouldn’t matter if 75% of it wasn’t made of cake as long as the cake part met with the numbers OP needed it to feed.
Grilledaubergines · 16/10/2021 18:30

*depend

ivykaty44 · 16/10/2021 18:30

will the dog notice though?

montanamal · 16/10/2021 18:33

The cake is awful.Very amateurish in my opinion.
£110 ? you where robbed ! x

Coreen16 · 16/10/2021 18:34

That all depends - where you live, how much you paid for it and it what you specifically asked for.
A cake like the picture is not difficult to do for someone who does this type of cake for a living as a specialist cake maker but I would expect you to pay upwards of 200 pounds for that. If you went into a local cake shop that creates birthday cakes then this is about right. Possibly they should have informed you it would be/contain RKT in places ( as this is also common as the cake can be too heavy and the support would again bump up cost).
The cake is for a 9 yr old who I am going to assume will be very happy with it and in future you need to be specific asking for a cake like this and a cake exactly like this are two different things. Hope you enjoy and a nice day is had :)

Exactly! This is what OP should have got. And was told she was getting. As you said, it's the same price.

I can't believe the people claiming OPs is "amazing," when it's so poor in comparison, they'll faint when they see yours (a proper one). I'd hate to see what they thought a shoddy cake looks like if that's their standard of amazing.

It would be "oh, that's a good effort" if I churned it out. As in someone who's got zero cake making experience and can't decorate, and basically had a go at it. From a full on professional cake making business with bespoke equipment and high street premises? Saying they're going to deliver a like for like cake. No.

MummyG44 · 16/10/2021 18:37

Very cute! It was never going to be an exact replica and I think they’ve captured a good likeness. At the end of the day they are not sculptors and they have to produce something edible. Also, children would prefer something fun that loosely resembles the animal, rather than the exact copy as that might be creepy eating something too lifelike! I realise you’d been expecting something else and are disappointed but I honestly think it looks like a lovely cake which will appeal to a 9 year old. Enjoy! x

starlight13 · 16/10/2021 18:38

It looks lovely but I would say v expensive. It would be no more than £60ish from the cake maker I go to (South East).
I would always recommend a local baker/ hobby than a shop, not only for price, but service and they actually listen.

Hesma · 16/10/2021 18:42

I wouldn’t be disappointed in the cake personally as I think it’s great. However I am surprised at the cost as I got similar for my Dd which was £50

miniwolf · 16/10/2021 18:43

I don't think I could cut up one of those really realistic ones!

forfucksakenett · 16/10/2021 18:44

@TwinsandTrifle if I had showed a picture of @Jaem23 's cake and got what the op got then yes I would be annoyed.

She didn't though did she? She trusted someone else's idea of realism when there was absolutely no evidence anywhere that the baker was able to make such a specialist cake.
