AIBU to be disappointed in this cake…

I picked up dds cake today and it was not what I expected.

Would you be happy with this cake? I’ve attached two pics below, one was the pic I sent to the cake maker of what I wanted (a family dog) and the other picture is of the cake.

Also his head is made of Rice Krispies as apparently heads are hard to do. I wasn’t aware that it wouldn’t be all sponge.

It’s from a proper cake shop, not someone who does it as a hobby.

What do you all think?

OP.

Did you get 30 slices out of just the body? That's nearly £4 a slice, which does seem quite a lot!

£4 a slice is about what you'd pay in most cake shops, isn't it?

It doesn't seem that extortionate for a professionally made cake for 30 people.

Happyher · 16/10/2021 19:19

I thought you’d were being unreasonable till I read how much was just rice crispies. I think you should have been made aware of that beforehand. I’m sure it didn’t spoil the party though and you are now wiser about party cakes!

YearsSinceISawYou · 16/10/2021 19:22

The picture in my post above was to @RussianSpy101.

This is the cake I had for my cat's 6 month birthday. I was amazed when some people were surprised at the price, poor things.

@Jaem23

I had this cake bought for me by my brother last year! It was a similar price to yours but we do live in the South West! The head was also made of rice crispies due to being able to use for sculpting!

I think your cake is lovely, did you send them a style you wanted the cake to be made in?

That cake is amazing!

Much more like I imagine the OP was expecting and for the same price too.

Mummyoflittledragon · 16/10/2021 19:24

@Jaem23
Your dog cake is beautiful. I’m surprised it was a similar price tbh.

I think the difference between the two is that hers is very amateurish by comparison. I totally could not have made yours but could have had a good stab at hers.

YearsSinceISawYou · 16/10/2021 19:25

@icedcoffees

Yes, you're right but they're usually quite generous portions.

It's hard to judge from the OP's picture but, as it is only the body that is cake, I would have thought that if you could get 30 slices from it, they wouldn't be much more than slivers!

What?
FazeleysRoyale · 16/10/2021 19:25

I think it looks lovely and hope that the icing is white choc fudge buttercream which is absolutely delicious.

Not sure whether it is worth the money as i haven't bought a professionally produced cake since 2008 when I ordered and bought a large square beautifully decorated cake. It cost £ 45 and was worth every penny. It fed everyone at the party and plenty left over.

Jaem23 · 16/10/2021 19:27

It was delicious as well! She’s an extremely talented baker, she’s made some incredible cakes!

YearsSinceISawYou · 16/10/2021 19:27

@Ignore that, @Mummyoflittledragon I thought I had posted two. I hadn't

Mummyoflittledragon · 16/10/2021 19:30

That still makes no sense to me…. but ok….

Now that is a dog cake!
FazeleysRoyale · 16/10/2021 19:38

I made a Percy the tank engine cake for DS' 3rd birthday. I was up until 2 a.m. finishing off the icing and it reduced me to tears. I had 3 month old baby as well which didn't help. Never again. They always got a homemade cake but something straightforward (boring !), and very tasty.

Harmonypuss · 16/10/2021 19:45

@MaybeAMoaner

Depends how much you paid. I’d say up to £50 it’s worth it.

My son (trained cake baker/decorator) was making cakes similar to this when he was about 18 (7yrs ago) and charged £75 back then, so I'd say the £110 the op paid is actually pretty cheap/reasonable for someone qualified to have produced it.
A couple of his examples from back then are attached.

Yes they’d be more generous portions but aside from buttercream in the middle and maybe a swirl on top, they’re in decorated. They don’t come in a cake board, don’t have ribbon on etc etc. Apples and oranges really isn’t it.

Bottom line is if you can’t justify the cost, don’t do it. ANd if you don’t understand the work and skill involved, again, don’t do it.

Grilledaubergines · 16/10/2021 19:48

*undecorated, not indecorated!

Lollipoplew · 16/10/2021 19:50

Most cakes that are animal shaped have the involvement of rice crispies... it's a lovely cake

FazeleysRoyale · 16/10/2021 19:55

@Harmonypuss
I want that Bertie Bassett cake ! Amazing

LoisLane66 · 16/10/2021 19:56

Having read only the first couple of comments, I'd say it's pretty good but it's not that hard to sculpt a head out of cake. You make it in a smallish bowl-shaped tin and stick it to the body with buttercream.
Having it made in a cake shop doesn't mean it's going to be as good as having it made by someone who's work is primarily making speciality cakes. I wouldn't be best pleased to have the head made wholly out of rice krispies covered in buttercream, as that would be (IMO) inedible.
I hope the occasion for which it was made, went well and no-one went barking mad. 😁

daisychain01 · 16/10/2021 19:59

£110! You must have money to burn!

You could have got a really nice one from Marks or Waitrose for around £40.

It all goes down the same way.

daisychain01 · 16/10/2021 20:00

Lovely Bertie Bassett cake ♥️

Learningstill · 16/10/2021 20:03

Think it’s amazing.

SnotZinwords · 16/10/2021 20:04

I’d reiterate that people really don’t understand how much a decent artistic cake costs. You’ve got the ingredients, the equipment, the utilities and the artistic skill of the baker. I come from the angle that my DH is a very good cake maker/designer and it never ceases to amaze me that people expect a beautiful designed cake for £30 and yet a cake will take him at least six hours to bake and decorate.

On the flip side of that though I’ve never understood parents who want to pay £100+ for a birthday cake for say their 1 year old Shock.

But café cakes aren't made especially to your own design in the way custom-made cakes are.

A baker baking for a café will generally do fairly basic cakes with minimal icing - things like chocolate cake, carrot cake, red velvet cake. They won't do cakes that are designed to look like your family pet, with your specific flavour combinations etc.
