AIBU to be disappointed in this cake…

I picked up dds cake today and it was not what I expected.

Would you be happy with this cake? I’ve attached two pics below, one was the pic I sent to the cake maker of what I wanted (a family dog) and the other picture is of the cake.

Also his head is made of Rice Krispies as apparently heads are hard to do. I wasn’t aware that it wouldn’t be all sponge.

It’s from a proper cake shop, not someone who does it as a hobby.

What do you all think?

We are in the south-east also. For a shaped cake of a dog we will be charging at least £150

budgiegirl · 16/10/2021 17:59

@Borntofun you need to go professional! I’d expect those to be £50-60 each!

Which is why there is no money in cake making! Those cakes are beautiful, and to reflect a decent wage, they should cost far more than that.

Doesn't look like your dog but the other one doesn't either.

I'd be furious with rice crispie marshmallow as we can't stand marshmallow.

genic75 · 16/10/2021 18:01

You absolutely hit the nail on the head there!!

purplebunny2012 · 16/10/2021 18:01

@TellySavalashairbrush

TBH I don't think it's the best. Can I ask how much did you pay for it? I think anymore than £25 and I would have been disappointed.
Woah, it's worth way more than that! This is what I paid £25 for and I think that was a bargain

Why are you comparing a supermarket cake to one made by a cake maker? That makes no sense. It’s like comparing the cost of cooking a big standard dinner at home with that of a good restaurant
Ohyou · 16/10/2021 18:04

@Notwhatiimagined

I think I was expecting it to look more like the dog.

It was £110, north west area

Given the price (I too am north west based) I would have expected more of a sculpted cake. Whilst it is cute I can understand your disappointment. Especially after watching that extreme cake making show on Netflix. The woman who does animals on there is unreal! Xx
HazelnutD · 16/10/2021 18:04

Sorry to be a pooh pooh but I think it's awful, especially for £110. I would ask for my money back, really, I think it's just horrendous. Are people on here being serious with their comments or just don't want to upset you? I don't want to upset you but you obviously think it's not right yourself, otherwise I would have just passed and said nothing. Sorry.

DaizyDee · 16/10/2021 18:04

Believe me if this was baked by me you would soon see the difference between someone who does this for a hobby and a professional. I'd be thrilled if I was a 9 year old getting that for my birthday!

Grilledaubergines · 16/10/2021 18:05

£25!!!! God it cost more in ingredients and materials to make it, let alone the hourly rate of pay!

Some people ought to stick with supermarket cakes as they’ve little understanding of the work and time involved.

olidora63 · 16/10/2021 18:05

Crazy amount of money to spend on a birthday cake! We have a fabulous local lady who has made the most stunning cakes for us and I have never paid over £70 and they were absolutely delicious!

Mummyoflittledragon · 16/10/2021 18:06

@DanceItOut

Ok as a baker myself this Depends on several things, the price and what you were told beforehand. The head being Rice Krispies is not a surprise to me at all because of the weight of sponge. If it had all be sponge then even with supports it is likely that moving the cake to transport it would move the head and cause it to “crack” or even fall off. However I would’ve made sure to tell you this and why it had to be that way when you places your order. Also depending on your budget depends on whether I would try to do this with modelling chocolate or with buttercream, I do think they probably would’ve sculpted the head a little more as Rice Krispie treats are easier to mould. But it’s not bad. It’s difficult to gauge an exact size but I would say this cake is worth £80.
I am not a cake maker. But I can imagine the cake would have looked far better with this head shape and the eye insertions would not have taken much longer.

Perhaps the piped buttercream wouldn’t have worked on this head as it’s probably relatively deep.

I think it does look like the dog. What a lucky 9 year old.

AliceinBorderland · 16/10/2021 18:06

Grilledaubergines

Because she has sunk £110 on a cake that isn't that cute and her daughter was disappointed with at first glance.

My point was why bother. That one is actually cuter. Doesn't have a weird tongue or ugly nose.

Ohyou · 16/10/2021 18:06

Incredibly talented and in my opinion undercharging! X

Neeks2510 · 16/10/2021 18:06

Depends how much you paid

Jjjayfee · 16/10/2021 18:06

Blimey who pays that much for a cake.. lovely though it is!

BoffinMum · 16/10/2021 18:07

Won’t someone think of the dog’s feelings? It’s like Jerry Hall being represented as Victoria Wood. In Rice Krispies.

Grilledaubergines · 16/10/2021 18:07

@rosyAndMoo

My friend makes cakes for a living, she is sugar craft trained with 20 years experience. She has never made a head out of Rice Krispies. For £110 I would expect better.
It’s standard practice and your friend must know this even if she chooses not to do it herself. Rice crispy heads are lighter and allow for more precise sculpting meaning less weight on the lower part of the cake. Your friend must know this surely?
PleaseReferToMeAsBritneySpears · 16/10/2021 18:08

I think it looks fine and I can't imagine what a much better one would look like - but I've had two amazing cakes recently and they were £30 and £40. £110 is outrageous.

DockOTheBay · 16/10/2021 18:09

@Troisfoisfilles

Anyone else feeling a teeny bit sad that they couldn’t even think about spending this much money on just a birthday cake 😞
I could afford it but I wouldn't. Massive waste of money. I made my daughters birthday cakes, sometimes shaped or just decorated sponges, for about £15 because all I had to buy was ingredients.
Grilledaubergines · 16/10/2021 18:10

@Jjjayfee

Blimey who pays that much for a cake.. lovely though it is!
Someone who realises cake makers are entitled to earn minimum wage or above I’d imagine!

What some people think is reasonable to pay baffles me. Cost the ingredients up (not just flour and eggs, but everything). Add on x hrs pay for the work in doing it.

sweatyhotlady · 16/10/2021 18:13

I used to make cakes and I undercharged. However I think £110 is extortionate. Rice Krispie head is quite standard. The main thing is how many servings it is. As long as it covers the number of servings you requested with the cake section I think it's fine.
