AIBU to be disappointed in this cake…

I picked up dds cake today and it was not what I expected.

Would you be happy with this cake? I’ve attached two pics below, one was the pic I sent to the cake maker of what I wanted (a family dog) and the other picture is of the cake.

Also his head is made of Rice Krispies as apparently heads are hard to do. I wasn’t aware that it wouldn’t be all sponge.

It’s from a proper cake shop, not someone who does it as a hobby.

What do you all think?

That is a beautiful cake! Great skill needed to make it & I Hope it tastes as good as it looks.

Hillary17 · 16/10/2021 17:40

For £110 this is GREAT! It very cute and looks like a dog….

Wowyouareboring · 16/10/2021 17:41

Think it’s pretty good !

Benjispruce4 · 16/10/2021 17:41

I wouldn’t pay £100 for a cake but it’s a good.

csigeek · 16/10/2021 17:42

Ok, I thought YWBU at first but changed my mind when I saw how much you paid 😳

Mmarmite · 16/10/2021 17:42

Well I was agreeing with everyone that it’s a cute cake and I’m sure a 9 year old would love it…until you said it was £110!?! For that price I’d want it to look like a realistic replica of the dog and have a collar made of real gold!

Borntofun · 16/10/2021 17:43

Robbed. I’m not a professional cake maker, made these for friends £30

I think it's really good :)

Whoopy1 · 16/10/2021 17:44

I think it is a nice looking cake, but not worth anywhere near what you paid for it. I am a home baker and could easily make pretty much the same cake, but without the Rice Krispies, so I would be disappointed if I had paid that for a professionally made cake.

Passenger42 · 16/10/2021 17:45

I would be disappointed in that for £110 but I wouldn’t even pay that in the first place. I make my own homemade birthday cakes and do my best with ready to roll icing, stencils and a piping bag.

Cavementality · 16/10/2021 17:45

The type of alchemy that you were expecting does not yet exist! It's a cake but you wanted an actual dog made of cake!

Pbbananabagel · 16/10/2021 17:46

@Borntofun you need to go professional! I’d expect those to be £50-60 each!

Bebethany · 16/10/2021 17:50

Notwhatiimagined It’s great, to be disappointed in this lovely cake is unreasonable? If you watch those sugar craft and cake making tv programmes, they charge 1,000’s. Unless this was more than £200 then please be happy. The cake maker has done an excellent job.

ArranMumma · 16/10/2021 17:51

Yes you’re being unreasonable. It’s amazing!

Geauxtigers · 16/10/2021 17:52

So really there was very little cake. For me that is definitely not worth what you paid for it. If the cake maker knew she didn't have the skills to make what you wanted she should have declined your business. I would expect to pay 80-100 for an exceptional tasting cake that looked good and served 20.
I would complain, not ask for any money back but I would let them know I was very disappointed in it

Bebethany · 16/10/2021 17:53

Borntofun You have such lucky friend, your work is exquisite and your underselling yourself. Your time alone should be at least £20 per hour.

Method · 16/10/2021 17:54

So you don't pay tax and you don't count your time, let alone factor in insurance, pension, holiday or sick pay. Of course you can undercut her but £110 is not robbing anyone off when you run an actual business.
helenwalker110 · 16/10/2021 17:54

I think it looks brilliant. Not sure what you were expecting. It’s recognisable as your dog

WiddlinDiddlin · 16/10/2021 17:55

Why are people comparing standard shaped cakes with some fondant modelling on, with a shaped cake with carved/modelled head.

They are NOT the same level of work whatsoever!

Pinklemonade1 · 16/10/2021 17:56

I think it's really cute, your daughter will love it.

Grilledaubergines · 16/10/2021 17:57

It’s cute!

I’m a cake maker in the south east and I’d only charge £65/£70 for it. But I don’t know how north west compares to south east in terms of cost of these things so maybe that’s a fair price there.

rosyAndMoo · 16/10/2021 17:57

My friend makes cakes for a living, she is sugar craft trained with 20 years experience. She has never made a head out of Rice Krispies. For £110 I would expect better.

SammyScrounge · 16/10/2021 17:58

Bet your daughter and her friends will love it!

genic75 · 16/10/2021 17:58

I own a cake shop. You should not have accepted the cake if you were disappointed that would’ve given the cake maker an opportunity to correct what was not right for you.
Also what is the background of the ordering for this did you have photos of previous cakes that you showed her that you wanted it to look like?

Using rice crispy treats is standard for this if you wanted it all cake then that will have cost significantly more potentially doubling the cost of the cake. However, the cake maker should absolutely have made you aware of this. We always tell clients about this.

If you truly are disappointed with this and you have eaten this cake it is too late to do anything however if you have not eaten the cake you must contact the cake maker immediately.

Shell4429 · 16/10/2021 17:59

I think it’s adorable 🥰
