I picked up dds cake today and it was not what I expected.

Would you be happy with this cake? I’ve attached two pics below, one was the pic I sent to the cake maker of what I wanted (a family dog) and the other picture is of the cake.

Also his head is made of Rice Krispies as apparently heads are hard to do. I wasn’t aware that it wouldn’t be all sponge.

It’s from a proper cake shop, not someone who does it as a hobby.

What do you all think?

So you expect a professional baker to sell a cake for less than the ingredients and not charge for time?

This reminds me of the time I received an email from a potential client saying she had wanted to make her child's birthday cake, but had added up all the ingredients she would need, and it was so expensive that she thought it would be cheaper just to get a professional to make it.
Because I make them out of pixie dust?? Unsurprisingly I didn't hear back from her once I send the quote.

HoldingTheDoor · 16/10/2021 09:07

OT but the actual dog totally looks like the dog in the original The Never Ending Story. Can anyone remember it's name?

Falkor? He's a dragon but does look rather like a dog.

diddl · 16/10/2021 09:09

As it goes it's a nice enough cake imo, but if she was going to make a generic cartoon dog cake I think she should have said.

inappropriateraspberry · 16/10/2021 09:10

It's a lovely cake, but the icing style is more of a home made version - piped buttercream like that is easily done at home! For the money, I'd expect a different icing style, but not a fully realistic, sculpted cake as that would cost a lot more! It doesn't look like the dog, more shading is needed, not a flat colour. And that skill is what you pay for, and why it would cost £350!
I think the problem is, we all see amazing cakes made on tv and online, but they cost hundreds and not something all cake makers can do. If the baker does mostly drip cakes, then 3D type models are not her forte.

flippertyop · 16/10/2021 09:13

It's a cute cake but looks nothing like your dog

RussianSpy101 · 16/10/2021 09:16

If a supermarket cake tastes the same as professionally made cake, you need a new cake maker!

I think you’ve got a fairly cheap professionally made cake for £110 and if you wanted a better standard you should’ve been willing to pay more.
You’ve received what you could afford so be grateful for that.

Anon778833 · 16/10/2021 09:23

I think it’s a lovely cake but I’m not so sure that I’d have been happy had I paid £110 for it!

Anon778833 · 16/10/2021 09:25

I’ve paid £70 to local cake makers for our cakes which were amazing - had a my little pony one once which had rainbow sponge inside. It was amazing. This was someone who does it from home though, not a shop.

TheAntiGardener · 16/10/2021 09:29

@TwinsandTrifle - agree re the quality. I’m just not seeing what is ‘amazing’ or ‘brilliant’ here. The finish is not professional.

That’s a separate issue from what a realistic rate is for professional work and also from the fact that different techniques will take more time and skill.

@groundhogdaycherry

I made this cake I'm heartbroken
Yeah, right

Funny how the poster never came back Hmm

Lovemusic33 · 16/10/2021 09:43

I think it looks fab. Pretty normal for cake makers to use rice crispies for 3d cakes as it holds shape much better than sponge cake.

I’m sure your dc will be happy with it ?

SingingInTheShitHouse · 16/10/2021 09:44

TellySavalashairbrush
TBH I don't think it's the best. Can I ask how much did you pay for it? I think anymore than £25 and I would have been disappointed.

Pahahaha Grin

Do I know you in RL as this reminds me way too much of a cake I DIDNT make

I offered to make an 80th birthday cake for very good friends dad. I asked friend for a few ideas of things dad loved, flavours, interests over & above the ex pub landlord I knew the dad to be. He said he'd get his Dsis to ring me as she'd probably have better ideas than him.

Dsis who I know, but not well, did ring me, but instead of giving me a few pointer ideas wise for the cake that was to be a gift from us as a family to DHs best friends DF. She decided it was to be a gift from her & she was going to pay me £25 for making a huge cake sculpture to serve 150 people ConfusedShock

I told her where to go & didn't make the cake... cheeky fecker

Lovemusic33 · 16/10/2021 09:45

I once had someone ask me to make them a cake for free if they bought the ingredients (a Campervan cake), I laughed and explained it would take me 6 hours to make the cake and that I charge £10 ph.

JollyAndBright · 16/10/2021 09:46

People are definitely missing the point.

It’s not that you think it’s a shit cake for £110,
It’s that you specifically asked for a realism cake, the baker agreed to a make a realistic cake of your dog,
But that’s not what you got.
You got a cute buttercream dog cake. It’s not a realism cake.

Did you know it was going to be buttercream and not fondant icing?
It would have been possible to do but very difficult and a lot of work, that would have been the first alarm bell for me.
Also the rice crispy head should have been discussed before hand.

I would make a complaint.

Anyone else feeling a teeny bit sad that they couldn’t even think about spending this much money on just a birthday cake 😞

MrsSkylerWhite · 16/10/2021 09:48

Looks like the work of a keen amateur. Certainly not £110 worth.

I couldn’t afford that at all but I don’t feel sad about it. We’re all different but there’s no way I’d want to spend over £100 on a cake, of any sort!

Even if I could afford it, I don't think I would.

Maybe for a 21st or something, or a wedding cake, but even that's stretching it for me.

It's disgustingly excessive, really.

£25!!!? That wouldn’t even pay for the ingredients in this cake let alone any time to make it or profit!!

Oh actually that might have been the warrior

RoseGoldEagle · 16/10/2021 09:56

To be honest as a 9 year old I'd have been mortified that you spent £110 on a cake that mostly other people were going to eat and not on toys for me.

It doesn’t really work like that though does it, if you can afford £110 for a cake then I’m sure the 9 year old will also have received plenty of presents.

I don’t think it’s great. £110 seems reasonable as a price for the ingredients and time it would have taken, but I don’t think the end result is that good.

Silverswirl · 16/10/2021 09:57

Valcor? Don’t know working from memory rather than Google

HaveringWavering · 16/10/2021 09:57

We’ve been to a few parties recently for my son’s classmates (Reception in a private school). They’ve all had entertainers and expensive, bought cakes. It makes me feel sad that the parents are so hands-off; my best memories are my Mum baking my birthday cakes and taking charge of the pass-the-parcel. I’m not sure what to do when it comes to my son’s turn as I don’t want him to feel embarrassed but it seems soulless to outsource the whole thing.

olidora63 · 16/10/2021 09:59

I think it looks great …not sure what you expected!
