AIBU to be disappointed in this cake…

I picked up dds cake today and it was not what I expected.

Would you be happy with this cake? I’ve attached two pics below, one was the pic I sent to the cake maker of what I wanted (a family dog) and the other picture is of the cake.

Also his head is made of Rice Krispies as apparently heads are hard to do. I wasn’t aware that it wouldn’t be all sponge.

It’s from a proper cake shop, not someone who does it as a hobby.

What do you all think?

@groundhogdaycherry
I made this cake I'm heartbroken

Do not be heartbroken, it's a lovely cake for the price paid. The OP is a cheapskate who bought without fully understanding what she would get for the price paid & has expectations WAY above what she paid.

I make cakes, not professionally, even though I've been offered work many times based on what I've made. Even for a well known cake sculptor whose cakes can run to £1000s. People in general don't have a clue of the amount of time effort & skill, let alone the cost of ingredients that go into cakes like this. They are used to mass produced prices with substandard ingredients from supermarkets & expect the same from a cake maker. Which is bloody ridiculous & put me off ever doing it as work, why would I when I never see half as much unrealistic expectations about the price & expectations of slave Labour in my usual trade!

You've made a beautiful job for the price paid & that's from someone who does know exactly the difference between what you've made & the OPs expectations & could make both types of cakes easily & that a realistic cake sculptor like the OPs expectations, especially with a cake head & the construction that would take, would take days to make.

Do not feel heartbroken that some cheapskate thinks you should work for less than minimum wage. That's on them, not you.

@Notwhatiimagined

I think I was expecting it to look more like the dog.

It was £110, north west area

It does look like the dog.
Notwhatiimagined · 16/10/2021 08:28

THIS!!

It is not what I was lead to believe I would get.

Anyway we have it now, I shall let you all know how it tastes and will photograph the inside as requested

@Notwhatiimagined can you post a photo of what you were expecting it to look like?

KaptainKaveman · 16/10/2021 08:29

@ouchmyfeet

I can't believe anyone pays £110 for cake Hmm

I think it's lovely though OP

What do you think people pay for wedding cakes? a fiver?
saraclara · 16/10/2021 08:29

Have you all conveniently glossed over the 5 cakes I posted. By 4 different makers. And the quality. And prices. They must all be people who like to work at a loss, given some of the nonsense on here.

They will cover their ingredients at that price, but no way are they paying themselves even minimum wage, and I assume they work from home, as they wouldn't be covering their rent, energy and business costs either.

It's very unfair to compare hobby bakers who work from home for pin money, and those working in their own shop (or for a shop that has to pay them a proper wage and meet their own business costs)

Mummyoflittledragon · 16/10/2021 08:36

YANBU
I would have expected something, along the lines of the pics posted by @Hydrate but which looked a little more like your dog.

I agree with you @TwinsandTrifle, op could have bought a generic off the shelf dog in place of this.

There are even recipes online of how to make the dog fur frosting, which is more life like. Had the baker used this frosting technique and better facial features, the cake would have been far far better. Idk if that would have made it more expensive of course.
www.bitememore.com/easy-recipes/cutest-puppy-cupcakes-recipe. The pic attached is how the fur is supposed to look after.

Is your daughter Veruca Salt?

You have more money than sense.

No!!

Those prices are not realistic for the time & skill required & are either talented hobby bakers making a bit of pin money, but doing for enjoyment rather than as a making an actual sustainable living. We see this around here too, when questioned they are not legally in business & don't have food hygiene certificates either, so don't factor in a reasonable hourly rate of pay for themselves, let alone business overheads

HaveringWavering · 16/10/2021 08:39

Christ that gaping-nostrilled guinea pig is horrific @Breastfeedingworries!

Tevion28 · 16/10/2021 08:40

Nothing wrong with it perfectly okay

SunshineCake1 · 16/10/2021 08:44

@Notwhatiimagined have you seen the cake maker has posted.

@groundhogdaycherry. Don't be heartbroken. Most of us think it is an amazing cake and understand the amount of time and effort that goes into making a cake like this whereas the OP possibly doesn't.

bumbleymummy · 16/10/2021 08:45

I think it’s a lovely cake. It doesn’t look exactly like your dog but would your son really mind?

bumbleymummy · 16/10/2021 08:48

Sorry, daughter

Notwhatiimagined · 16/10/2021 08:49

Grounddog isn’t the cake maker that’s why I’m not responding to her

I’m appalled at the ugly too red name underneath! That colour! With the yellow, Yikes!
Happy birthday to your dd!.

Have you conveniently glossed over the fact that some people on here, including me, know how much it costs in ingredients, electricity, equipment, and time, to make a quality, non-massed produced cake, and are telling you that your cake makers are not making enough profit on those cakes to sustain a business?

Lots of people will make cakes and call themselves a business. Most will not be making any more than pin money. That's up to them, if they want to do that, then go for it, and good for you for finding people that will do this for you. But please don''t then tell everyone else that £70 for a three tier cake is the correct price to pay for a sustainable business.

I've been running a home based cake business for over 20 years. It's expensive to run, and I don't have the overheads a shop would have. I charge prices that are at the cheaper end of a sustainable business.
In the time I have been doing this, I've seen lots of home cake makers start up, charging much less than I do. But they never last. Most haven't really thought about what their true costs and time will be, and they stop again after a year or two, and go back to making cakes for family and friends. Or they carry on, but eventually put up their prices to a more realistic level.

WaltzingBetty · 16/10/2021 08:57

@TellySavalashairbrush

TBH I don't think it's the best. Can I ask how much did you pay for it? I think anymore than £25 and I would have been disappointed.
So you expect a professional baker to sell a cake for less than the ingredients and not charge for time? Confused
mafted · 16/10/2021 08:58

@Notwhatiimagined

THIS!!

I think I'd be disappointed too. It's not much cake and it's cute but not a brilliant finish. However the communication between you and the baker doesn't seem to have been great. You should have provided more than the dog photograph, they should have informed you about things like the cereal head. Personally I don't see the appeal of the type of cake with thick fondant icing and loads of food colouring airbrushed on to it. Does anyone ever eat it?
mafted · 16/10/2021 09:00

@HaveringWavering

Christ that gaping-nostrilled guinea pig is horrific *@Breastfeedingworries*!
It looks like a sheep!
HunterHearstHelmsley · 16/10/2021 09:01

@SameToo

£110 for a cake??? Do you shit money 😂 how old is your DD? She might cry when you slice the family pet up.
I was quoted £60 for a basic sponge with lettering for my parents anniversary. I like them but not £60 worth Grin so I bought one from sainsburys and did the lettering myself
WaltzingBetty · 16/10/2021 09:04

@Notwhatiimagined

No!!! The dinosaur head was £150, the same person who did that dinosaur wanted £350 for the dog
Right. So you wanted the same level of realism as a £350 cake but only wanted to pay £110 for it?

Did you show the baker any example photos @Notwhatiimagined ? Or just expect them to read your mind?
If you have your daughter high expectations then that's on you. You've got a good cake for a good price.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 16/10/2021 09:04

@groundhogdaycherry

I made this cake I'm heartbroken
Don't be! It's a lovely cake. It sounds as though the expectation was a realistic rendering of the dog which was never going to happen!

I'm disappointed you're NW as I think you'd do a wicked one of my cat.

therespectablecardigan · 16/10/2021 09:04

OT but the actual dog totally looks like the dog in the original The Never Ending Story. Can anyone remember it's name?
