AIBU to be disappointed in this cake…

I picked up dds cake today and it was not what I expected.

Would you be happy with this cake? I’ve attached two pics below, one was the pic I sent to the cake maker of what I wanted (a family dog) and the other picture is of the cake.

Also his head is made of Rice Krispies as apparently heads are hard to do. I wasn’t aware that it wouldn’t be all sponge.

It’s from a proper cake shop, not someone who does it as a hobby.

What do you all think?

@HaveringWavering

We’ve been to a few parties recently for my son’s classmates (Reception in a private school). They’ve all had entertainers and expensive, bought cakes. It makes me feel sad that the parents are so hands-off; my best memories are my Mum baking my birthday cakes and taking charge of the pass-the-parcel. I’m not sure what to do when it comes to my son’s turn as I don’t want him to feel embarrassed but it seems soulless to outsource the whole thing.
But it’s generally mums who feel the pressure to do this, so why not outsource it if they can.
alligatorpeardrop · 16/10/2021 10:05

I think,it's great. The ears and tail slight pinkish hue is ace. I just showed it to DS who's eyes lit up with glee at it! He'd be over the moon if that was his birthday cake.

If you want to do it yourself then do it.

Quite often my kids have “old fashioned” parties where we pile into a hall, I take charge of the games and it’s reminiscent of my parties that my Nana used to throw. The kids love it and it doesn’t matter what other people do as long as my kids enjoy themselves.

Do what you want to do and what is right for your family.

I love all the organising and stressing and playing games. My best mate hates it so she does entertainer or soft play or trampoline park. Our kids are equally happy so it doesn’t make either of us a better mum because we do it different.

superplumb · 16/10/2021 10:10

Looks good. The head would be too heavy for sponge hence rice krispies. She should've warned you about it though. Still a good cake. I'd be happy with that. As for the price, I used to make cakes for friends and honestly, the ingredients cost way more than you realise

BoredZelda · 16/10/2021 10:10

The head out of Rice Krispies is standard for modelled cakes

It never used to be, It bugs me when bakers do this. It’s a time saver, but it isn’t baking.

The cake is cute though.

Doomscrolling · 16/10/2021 10:19

You ordered a sculpture cake from a drip cake maker to save money. And that’s what you got - a cake of a dog, but nothing lifelike because that wasn’t the skill set you were paying for.

LaurenKelsey · 16/10/2021 10:21

@Aquamarine1029

It's adorable. What on earth did you want? A cake that looks like a taxidermied dog?
This is hilarious! 🤣

I agree. Maybe you should have asked her to make a drip cake if that's where her expertise lie.

What does it matter whether the cake maker is making the head from Rice Krispies or cake? As long as the main sponge body of the cake serves the number requested, I can't see the problem with the head being made from another edible product.

And I expect the cake maker is looking for time savers, otherwise the cake would be more expensive. I do agree that this should have been advised to the customer in advance though

MargaretFaffter · 16/10/2021 10:25

Looks good to me, very cute. I’d be happy with it.

BrilliantBulb · 16/10/2021 10:35

The baker told her that's what she was getting.
@TwinsandTrifle @Notwhatiimagined did the baker actually tell her what she was getting though? OP did you actually see any other dog or sculpture cakes from this baker as an example of their work? Otherwise, ordering a model from a drip cake business is a little bit silly.

ILoveYou3000 · 16/10/2021 10:38

*Yeah, right

Funny how the poster never came back*

They did come back, asking the OP a direct question, which the OP is ignoring.

@Notwhatiimagined how do you know for absolute certain that poster isn't the cake maker? You said about their age and where they live but how exactly do you know that information?

FancyAnOlive · 16/10/2021 10:38

I think it's lovely and £110 is a fair price to pay for that cake, cakes like that to order are usually expensive - time consuming and ingredients etc.

I think there's a trend now for much bigger parties. When I was a child it was five or six friends and it would have been much easier to do it yourself at home. We always had a cake from the local bakery though (although the style was very different to nowadays).
ExD1938 · 16/10/2021 11:07

It's hideous.
I could have done a better one myself - it looks like one of those 'failed' offerings on Bake Off An Extra Slice.
Complain!

LindaEllen · 16/10/2021 11:09

@Notwhatiimagined

I think I was expecting it to look more like the dog.

It was £110, north west area

Wasn't Adam was it?
Maves · 16/10/2021 11:11

It's pretty basic in all fairness and isn't even the right dog I'd be kissed off £110?

Maves · 16/10/2021 11:11

@ImNotDancing how fucking rude

LunaAndHerMoonDragons · 16/10/2021 11:12

@DeathWinsAGolfish

You could improve it a little by removing the tongue and re positioning the eyes to further down the face a spacing them. I'm sure it will be loved by the recipient. Smile
I agree moving the eyes and removing the tongue would look better. The cost sounds very high, but then I don't live where you do.

If you can bake it, do. I can't decorate a cake for toffee and barely have time to keep on top of the day to day, so I buy them for my kids. I don't look down on those who bake their own- I'm envious of their skill and time (or time-management). I know a SAHM who always bakes her kids cakes and they look fabulous.

Total non-sequitur, but I was very annoyed when that woman won bake off with a rice Krispie peacock. Seemed like cheating.
willithappen · 16/10/2021 11:24

It does look like the dogs and looks like a fantastic cake

furbabymama87 · 16/10/2021 11:27

I think you should have shown pictures of the type of cake you expected and sourced other cakes of the type you wanted, to see an idea of the price you'd be expected to pay. The cake is nice for the style that it is, I think it's a bit expensive as I've had bigger better cakes for less. But next time do more research as the baker probably didn't have as high level of expertise as you thought and they wouldn't have known exactly what you wanted.

usernamealreadytaken · 16/10/2021 11:31

@Puzzledandpissedoff

Interesting that the one listed earlier is only £110 and much more professional looking: cakesburg.co.uk/collections/pet-cakes/products/cockapoo-dog-cake-white

Did she show you any of the work she's done before, OP, and if so were the pictures hers realistic in view of what you got?

@Puzzledandpissedoff that cake is much smaller (listed as feeding 18-20; OP's cake was for 30) and still has a rice crispy head. Not sure it looks any nicer tbh, just different.
