AIBU to be disappointed in this cake…

Notwhatiimagined · 15/10/2021 14:54

I picked up dds cake today and it was not what I expected.

Would you be happy with this cake? I’ve attached two pics below, one was the pic I sent to the cake maker of what I wanted (a family dog) and the other picture is of the cake.

Also his head is made of Rice Krispies as apparently heads are hard to do. I wasn’t aware that it wouldn’t be all sponge.

It’s from a proper cake shop, not someone who does it as a hobby.

What do you all think?

Happy Birthday to your child OP.

R0tational · 16/10/2021 07:09

Hope the party is fun :)

Cheeseandlobster · 16/10/2021 07:11

Completly missing the point but I am agog at spending so much money on a cake that isn't even for 'special' birthday. It seems bonkers to me. When ds was 9 he was more than happy with a ten quid cake from the supermarket. Oh and it is a lovely looking cake so yabu. I hope it tasted good too

WeAreTheHeroes · 16/10/2021 07:12

You weren't prepared to spend £350 and that's the result. The skill and time involved are totally underestimated by many people. The cake is a good one and the cost reasonable imho.

WLAH · 16/10/2021 07:13

Amazing cake

ErinAoife · 16/10/2021 07:17

The cake is great. Your daughter will like it.

Flumo · 16/10/2021 07:17

Love it

ItsAlwaysThere · 16/10/2021 07:25

That's brilliant!

Hydrate · 16/10/2021 07:30

At least it was presentable and tasted good, that is what counts. I don't have much experience buying fancy cakes. I agree with not wanting to spend a fortune on the cake, and tbh I would have tried to make it myself and probably would have resulted in mess resembling something like a drunken snowman. I can make a simple layer cake though!

Sundaymorningfiveninteen · 16/10/2021 07:34

Lovely cake but I agree not 110 pounds lovely . But what I really want to know is the breed of your beautiful dog. We have an almost identical looking boy of our own but as he came from a very dubious source we gave no idea what breed he is. People often have a guess but no really agreement . He really does look like your lovely boy/ girl.

hardyloveit · 16/10/2021 07:37

For that price op it should look more realistic. I would have said this was a hobby baker rather than a professional!

Notwhatiimagined · 16/10/2021 07:38

The dog is my mums, not ours. He’s a shih poo which is a shih tzu cross with a toy poodle.

My dd would be thrilled to receive this cake! It's very cute. Hope she has a lovely birthday op.

I noticed Asda's jaspur the cat cake on the thread. For anyone who's ever tempted to buy this cake.. don't Grin my dd was over the moon but it tasted like shit and the cats tail looked like an actual shit Grin

apricotparfait · 16/10/2021 07:44

All these people saying I/my mum/sister/aunt/friend used to 'do cakes' and would have charged £30 for this. Note the 'used to'. A business charging this much isn't sustainable, it's no wonder they no longer 'do cakes'. Anyone who is currently charging less that what the OP paid for such a cake won't be staying in business for much longer - nice hobby but not a business - and I suggest you do some sums if you want to stay in business.
For the person who said it tastes the same as the £10 one from Asda. Really doubt it, and how would you know what each cake makers cake tastes? The £10 factory machine made cake is not going to look the same for photos or have the same lasting memory, no one will be talking about in years to come...it's just forgotten. It's like comparing Primark clothes to a couture, bespoke piece of clothing or a Saville Row suit.

Toooldforthis321 · 16/10/2021 07:46

Ah it's a cute cake op, fun looking.
My daughter is also 9 next week and would love this. As it goes, she likes to go to the supermarket to choose hers and its become a bit of a tradition Grin.
I hope your daughter has a lovely day and the cake tastes good.

Tara336 · 16/10/2021 07:53

I think the price is fair, it’s made by a business that has overheads! It looks great! Compare that to a mass produced cake from a supermarket and you’ll realise it’s well priced

LooksBetterWithAFaceMask · 16/10/2021 07:57

I think the fact that the other baker wanted to charge £350 tells you what you need to know. Sculpture cakes are expensive and take days to make and also very often use mallow rice crispy to sculpt as it’s far easier to get details right.
The cake you have is lovely and you got what you paid for in terms of details and style.

Anotherlovelybitofsquirrel · 16/10/2021 08:06

So you wanted a £350 cake for £110 and don’t understand why it’s not what you expected?

Agreed. It's very sweet and what you get for the price you're prepared to pay.

PurplePizzaCake · 16/10/2021 08:08

I hope you have a lovely party. Please let us know how the cake tastes and can we see a photo of the inside of the cake?

For Devon's 10th birthday can you get the dinosaur cake maker to make a dog cake?I'm really invested in this now having just read the whole thread and would love to see the dinosaur lady make the dog cake.

FWIW I think the cake is OK, but I would maybe be a bit disappointed

LyndaSnellsSniff · 16/10/2021 08:11

I wonder what the dog will think as it sits and watches a cake version of itself being carved up and eaten..?

🐶 🎂 💀

saraclara · 16/10/2021 08:12

@Notwhatiimagined

No!!! The dinosaur head was £150, the same person who did that dinosaur wanted £350 for the dog
Yet you expected £110 lady to produce something of the same quality as £350 lady?
DockOTheBay · 16/10/2021 08:13

@TellySavalashairbrush

TBH I don't think it's the best. Can I ask how much did you pay for it? I think anymore than £25 and I would have been disappointed.
Are you joking? £25 wouldn't get much more than a plain iced sponge around here
TangledNemo · 16/10/2021 08:14

Price seems reasonable to me. We paid £100 for a cake for our wedding last year. Add in Covid, Brexit and the amount of extra work this cake would have taken compared to ours, I think it’s actually a good price.

I can understand being disappointed if it doesn’t match what you had in mind, but I think the cake looks great.

Breastfeedingworries · 16/10/2021 08:17

I’d be very disappointed op!! These two cakes from my favourite artist/cake maker. First is a Guinea pig which I believe was £70 the second being the cake I commissioned for my dds first birthday was £120. I would have expected W lot more for my money. Spending that much you want the wow factor.

@user1471439310

My daughter works in a bake shop and said the cake is adorable, that using rice krispies was a good idea, and you would have paid way more than you did it you wanted life like dog.
And this is what everyone is missing.

The baker said she was doing a cake to look like her dog. And then didn't.

Do you get that OP understands that she can have a fabulous uber life like cake for £350. OP wasn't after that. She could have had a cheap "well it's a dog" cake for £50. OP wasn't after that.

OP wanted something between the two, which are like many of the cakes that have been posted. Which OP has said "yes, like that, that's what I was expecting" The baker told her that's what she was getting. The baker charged her £110. The baker then gave her that thing.

No, it's not "welllll, if you pay under £350, what do you expect". She expects what she was told she would be getting. FFS.

Have you all conveniently glossed over the 5 cakes I posted. By 4 different makers. And the quality. And prices. They must all be people who like to work at a loss, given some of the nonsense on here.

Because these people are all in business. And that's what they charge. So it's all getting a bit tedious with the "it's £350 or you have to accept something that looks like it's a school project"

It's a fine cake for £40. It's a joke for £110. And the whole point, it's not what the baker claimed she was making.
